While any attack on Asians and Asian-Americans is unacceptable, the case below is exceptionally terrible. Not only was an innocent woman attacked and seriously injured on her way to church but three people watched the attack happen in front of the opened door apartment building where they were and closed the door after the attacker left and did not help the woman. Man who killed his mom arrested in NYC attack on 65-year-old Asian womanAn arrest was made early Wednesday in a brutal attack on a 65-year-old Asian woman that drew widespread outrage after footage of the assault was released. New York City police identified the suspect as Brandon Elliot, 38, who was charged with two counts of assault as a hate crime and one count each of attempted assault as a hate crime, assault and attempted assault. He was already on lifetime parole for fatally stabbing his mother in 2002, authorities said. He was freed from prison in November 2019, according to police. No other details about the murder were released. The attack on the Asian woman unfolded about 11:40 a.m. Monday in the 300 block of West 43rd Street, which is in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, police said. Police released video that captured a man kicking the victim in her stomach, causing her to fall to the ground. The man then stomped the woman's head multiple times while making anti-Asian statements, police said. Video appeared to show that as the assault continued, at least three people in the lobby of a luxury apartment stood by and watched. One of them closed the door as the assailant walked away and left the woman on the ground, the video showed. "The victim sustained a serious physical injury and was removed by EMS to NYU Langone Hospital," police said in a statement. She was discharged Tuesday. Early Tuesday, the Brodsky Organization, which manages the luxury apartments, said the company suspended the apartment building staff members who witnessed the attack and appeared not to come to the woman's aid. I can imagine not running outside or even screaming at a maniac to stop. I am very chicken. I would, however, call the cops. That isn't super risky.

If the three who watched the attack in front of them were afraid of being attacked themselves I can understand. But after the attacker left the woman on the ground severely injured, they made zero attempt to help her and even closed their door on her. Deplorable.

People are afraid to help. Its the right thing to do, but witnessing a severe attack or murder can be really hard for some people, especially if you have to give a witness statement, and then you might have to testify in court.
I once witnessed a double shooting in a parking lot. 2 cousins shot each other, one was still alive when we got to him, and me and another woman tried to help, but he bled out. We were kept at the scene for 6 hours. I nearly had a breakdown waiting to give my statement. It was stressful, I was tired, and I wanted to go home because it was around 10pm (after a late dinner) and I had to work the next day. I stayed, and did what I could do, but I could see how some people wouldn't have the luxury of being able to get involved.
I'm not excusing any of it, and someone should have gone out to help her. But in this world that we live in, people are afraid to get involved. Once the police arrive, if they know you saw or did anything, they are keeping you there until they can get a statement.

I saw this and I thought it was disgusting. I understand being afraid to intervene physically. I don't understand not calling for help or closing the door on her. I can't justify that. Be a decent human being.

I would of stopped the attack the second she was down and out of a possible line of fire.
There would be no stomping.
Of course not in NY City.
I'm not allowed, it's against the law.
Over there I would help her after the attacker finished and was out of sight.
Crazy country in places.

I have never really helped anyone. I will say that when I have seen something, there are always other people that are helping. Whenever there is an accident near work, someone in scrubs always shows up. I figure they can help more than me.
I am not a comforting person, especially when I'm nervous. And anything medical freaks me out. So, I'm not the best candidate.

I was in a loosely similar situation, to be honest, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing was real, so I froze and just stared for a couple minutes. Not out of fear, but out of shear disbelief. No one was injured, but it did involve the use of a gun, in public, by an angry asshole who could of easily pulled the trigger.

Op-Ed: Why do bystanders fail to intervene when they see others in pain?In the last week, we saw another horrific anti-Asian assault on video. A 65-year-old woman was walking to church in New York City when she was brutally attacked by a man on a street near Times Square. The assailant said, “You don’t belong here,” as he kicked her in the chest and stomped on her while she was on the ground. The footage from an apartment building captured the vicious attack, allowing authorities to identify and arrest a suspect. The video also caught the behavior of security guards who witnessed the assault from inside the building. Stunningly, rather than intervening to help, one of the guards slowly walked toward the woman. Then he closed the door, leaving her alone on the sidewalk a few feet away. Reacting on Twitter, Sherrilyn Ifill, president of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, wrote, “I have seen similar scenes from history of bystanders who turned away. It is a sign of danger for our society… We need to understand, what did these security guards think they were securing in that moment?” This is exactly the right question. We think part of the answer is about identity. Since the 1960s, social psychologists have been studying why bystanders fail to intervene when strangers need help. Among other factors, people are significantly more likely to assist victims if they believe that they share an identity — a common group membership — with them. Complete article here: link

I'm another who is calm, cool & collected during the emergency & fall to pieces later. I've been involved in several emergencies and have always done all I was able to do & called for help too. I have also been robbed at gun point and was able to give LE a very good description and ID the guy once he was caught....about 10 min. after the robbery....even though he'd had on a winter stocking cap that was also a face mask. I even ID'd the gun he used...it had a rubbing mark on the barrel that made that easy. I would have done what I could & certainly would have called 911!
I have a Japanese DIL so I worry. She is in Ca. or I wouldn't be letting her go any place without one of us with her is she lived near by.

Or was this attack on an elderly Asian woman already made possible from that type of sentencing, regarding lifetime parole, for stabbing and killing his mother.

Trump basically called for violence on Asian Americans by calling it the COVID-19 and refusing to acknowledge he had the power to lessen how Covid affected Americans. Was a great article the other day about a biracial woman who appears white. She talked about how conflicted she felt because she wasn't a target because of her looks but many of her loved ones are.
