Here is the June 1st update of the portfolio reported on in mid-April. So - In the month of May, dividend reinvestment bought a total of 45.088 additional shares across various holdings. A total of $960 reinvested. there was some spare change in my rollover account, so I bought 2 CAIXY shares with it. Unfortunately - one of the holdings did not have the auto-reinvest on, and now I've got some more spare change. I can't autoreinvest dividends for CAIXY so when that comes in on June 8th, I'll combine and put an order through. Most of the holdings increased in value, so the total percent yeild continues to trend downward. RY hit an all time high this past week, for example. I've done a little something to juice it up, but wanted to put this in as 'progress' since the last update in April. I've been using the dividend figures from my tdameritrade account. Once I've been at this a year I will use my own number of dividends received, to account for some foreign taxes that are taken out of the dividends.

I added 750 shares of FSUMF to the portfolio. Has a nearly 16% dividend. Seems very outlandish and speculative, but I've had a very small portion of this in another account and has been doing well the past 5 years and increased dividend by, a lot. I had to pay $50 for a special foreign transaction, and it's in my taxable account and I can't reinvest the dividend automatically, so that will be something to be dealt with, and taxes paid annually. But it seemed too good to pass up! So - will see how this works out for me. I 'borrowed' additional money from the house fund for this purchase! I now owe myself/the house 28k! LOL, I'm obsessed, I can't stop buying stocks. So - I don't think I can add any more new money to this for a while so I will have to be content with the dividend rreinvestments going forward. And they are a lot of fun! without the addition of FSUMF, my yearly expeted dividend yeild from this portfolio is $9,331.27, averaging $777.61 monthly. After adding FSUMF, yearly is $11,386.27 and monthly $948.86. Close to my inital goal of 1k a month. But - I still owe 28k to the house, might end up selling some if I can't replace that money in another way. Also, doubling my goal to 2k a month in dividends. That part will be slow going I think, at least until the house is all fixed up and I can direct new money here. And not think about having to sell some of this! . And then I think I retire! As mentioned on other threads - I might not make it to the end of my financial planning, but it will help me if I can track my progress here and encourage me to stick with it.

things were trending up plus the divvy reinvestment, but over the past few days/week, have lost about 2 % of value.
kind of disappointing.....will see where it goes next week.
Also - very confused on what the reinvested divvies take their price from. Maybe closing the day before pay? I couldn't tell. It seemed a much higher price than I as expecting given the slide in share prices this week.

i didn't check end of day prices, just dod now - looks like this is down 4% from peak, still up from when I started, but more volatile than I was aiming for.
may need to rethink my strategies/goals. or reaffirm. will consider tomorrow.

so - too lethargic for a full update at start of month. Still down overall but up a bit from previous post.
So - got the orange (ORAN) dividend. over 25% withholding - assuming french taxes there. plus a 21.96 fee? is that for the div reinvest? idk. So out of about 655 for the semiannual dividend, only got 459. International diversification is expensive, lol!
But they seem to have raised the dividend and its now nominal at 9%, so even with tax and fee still cashing in at 7% annually. Price is down from purchase, but not too shockingly so. 6 months until next dividend for this one, will see how it goes til next time I guess.
Growth portfolio did better in June.....

this last month has been hell on interest sensitives.
I am still liking the REITS quite a bit. RWT, OXSQ, and SRET look good to me. I think this sector still has 50% increase potential over the next six months.

thanks dj, going to hold tight for the most part, maybe consider some tweaks here and there, but really - what choices are there these days?
Generally, bonds/bond funds are a waste right now, imo. In terms of their historic role in aa I don't think they are functioning the same way anyway. Cash is a losing proposition against inflation/no interest rates. Am putting money into the ibonds every pay check which I think are good, no loss of capital and over 3% interest. I will do something to max that out at 10k for the calendar year.
Previously, I had been focused on 100% growth but I am considering quitting my job in a huff frankly because.....so much....but will see how I feel in a month or so. It's been a really rough month at chez rukh. Very expensive too.
But I am concerned about volatility, SORR, etc. and trying to find more safety, and income, somehow. I am 5.5 years away from taking early SS, so it would be a long and expensive road to get there. It looks like I could make it, but would depend on nothing too bad happening the next few years and nothing really bad the next 10 or so. An iffy proposition.
Really tough decisions for me. But my physical and mental health are really low right now, and while I would hate to start erroding assets before I am super secure, I worry I will look back on this time and think - this is when I could have changed course. Maybe it was last year I should have done it? Then again - I may look back and say - just 1-2 more years and you could have been in great shape forever. sigh.
Who knows? I think I need a crystal ball.

do annuities ask about your parents' lifespans? Both parents made it to 96, mom looking at 97 this year and still living independently, fully recovered from her stroke.
I feel like I wouldn't get a good deal on an annuity if they ask that.
ETA: at 62, my ss payment wouldn't even be 2k/month - and that's assuming I keep waorking until then. I think it'd be about 1600/month if I quite now and take it at 62.

well - most of the dividend holdings are down 2% or more vs the market at 1.94% sp500 1.26% nasdaq. Quite a few are more than 3% down, so - really questioning if this portfolio is working as intended.
Very worried about where things are headed economically - market - inflation - supply chain - as the pandemic spirals up again. And what that would mean for this kind of portfolio. In regards to the stability of capital and dividend payout.
I just don't know where to find something that is lower risk/reward - but still something solid that builds over time, albeit at a slower rate.

I know what you mean Rukh. My mad money porfolio finally got back to near where it fell off the cliff when covid hit.
We had pulled all of our IRA money out about 1 year ago. I went back in with all of it. H. is putting his in some at a time. Who knows?
We survived the 2008-09 meltdown but that has made us nervous. The small interest rate on savings looks great after something like that.

No new money into this since last update (May?), but dividend reinvestments ongoing. So some stocks up, some down, some slight decreases in dividends, some increase, FSUMF has decreased value by a couple dollars/share, but also add $1 to dividend? Strange. Will see what comes with that one. Total value up about 2% since last update, yeild has increased - due mainly to the FSUMF big leap in dividends. Also due to the FSUMF increase, I've exceeded my inital goal with expected yearly dividends at $12,254.15 translating to average monthly of $1,021.17. I do think FSUMF is a bit volatile and speculative, but, well, I guess I'll see where it goes.

i am STILL holding to my price target of $16 on RWT, even though it only has 4 months to hit it. it is trending nicely, and continues raising dividends. CAXIA also had a nice pop this week.

Just wanted to post a miniupdate.
the dividend portfolio is doing well. I have made no buys or sells, just reinvesting the dividends automatically for all the stocks that allow that. some of the nonUS ones vanguard won't. The overall value dipped for a few months but is back up its high point. RY and STAG are both up, FSUMF is way down, as is LFC but has held steady the last few months at the lower level.
The expected annual/monthly dividend is actually down a bit rather than up, just as I refine my metrics, particularly accounting for nonUS dividends that are taxed outside the US before I get them. That does take a bit of a bite out of those. Need to think more on the value of trying to diversify this portfolio internationally and those practical issues such as dealing with extra tax laws, no autodivvy reinvest, etc.
I need to finish out my year's i-bond purchases, then I may put a little new money into this portfolio.

Rukh O'Rorke why did you settle on a 5% yield as a target? That is significantly higher than the yield on the S&P 500. Do you investigate the sustainability of the dividend? Generally a payout ratio of 55-60% or below is considered sustainable. REITs are required to pay out 90% of taxable income out as dividends. In the spreadsheet that I keep on my stocks/ETFs, I track three different yields: current yield, yield on total investment (purchase price + reinvested dividends), and yield on purchase price. -movinonup

Good info on the REITs, so they do have higher dividends and then that will balance with the other types of stocks to get to 5%. The fsumf was a bit impulsive, got one dividend of over 1k so far, but still down overall - about 3k. might consider selling for a tax loss - this is in my taxable account. But I had such great faith in it, not willing to quite throw in the towel yet. overall doing well, with a few clunkers. will see how they do for rest of the year.

well - something interesting is occuring.... O is merging with vereit and spinning off shares for a new company onl today at close of business, had not heard that this was happening before getting the notice on vanguard about this happening today at close of business. My guess is I won't see the change in my account til tomorrow. Have no idea what this will mean for me personally, no info available on the new spinoff as yet, just listed with a value of 0 in a search for the company name on tdameritrade but no page on td or vanguard sites. Seems I will get 10 25 shares of the new company, will see what that does to the O shares values.... Anywhoo, I thought it was a little bit of excitement for me! Will have to check my account to morrow and see what happens.

well - I got my 25 shares of ONL WI in the account this am, stilll no info on it all. O share prices seem unaffected, and the new stock is an REIT so must have a dividend, but still no info on that anywhere I can find. So just a boost of $575 into the account. I'll certainly take that! And try to be patient on the info.
Next week a lot of dividends coming through. I always enjoy that! Most are mid to end of month, so first half of month is not as fun.

I know your portfolio is much different than ours. We have had a few fairly reputable corporations spin off a division over the decades and sometimes they are winners, but it seems like more of them were bigtime losers. Hope your is a winner, but keep your trigger finger handy just in case

Hope your is a winner, but keep your trigger finger handy just in case The ONL did drop sharply, seems a lot of people wanted to jettison it quickly? the profile on tdameritrade: since it was free I'm ok with jut seeing where it goes over the next few months to a year.

caxia is really struggling all of the sudden, but RWT and most of the others are steady to higher. oxsq is lagging, but I don't get why. the yield is up to 10% from April this year: I have a total of about 11k split kind of evenly between SRET, RWT, OXSQ, and DSL. So - that will be it for a while I think. I do need to consider how to handle dividends, if I want to reinvest where they came from? or some other thing? you made me dig a little deeper into these four than I have been. of these 4, RWT is a clear winner, up over 35%, so that is lifting this selection here. SRET is up by less than 1%, dsl down by3% and oxsq down by 11%. And that includes all the dividends reinvested over that time frame. N of shares is up by between 3.1% (rwt) to 5.5% (oxsq), with the combined dividend up by $10 from june to september. Just one quarter as the rwt is quarterly and those are the only data points I have on all of these. but not sure why I keep grouping oxsq in with these as it is a similar to psec rather than these. psec has been doing pretty well. of which I'm glad as I made a much more sizable investment in it! it is up about 24%, and with reinvestments have increased holdings by 5.9%. Although - the dividend is not quite up by $10 over that time. Likely the reason the other lot is up a bit more is because RWT increased it's dividend by 3 cents a share between those two points, and with oxsq going down and the dividend yield is nearly 10% now, it is buying up more shares/month. I am tracking the growth of the dividends over time, thinking I could retire when it gets to 2k a month. So far just increase by a couple of bucks each month, so still just observing how this works going forward, hoping for some increased momentum....

wish I hadn't checked the market today!!
but with regards to this protfolio - my growth portfolio is down a bit less than the overal market, but my dividend portfolio is down more. Wierd, the opposite of expectation, and a bit concerning. Just in that it is not the intention of this protfolio.
I suppose as long as the dividends are not decreased, price swings are a bit immaterial. But that won't be tested until a real and prolonged pullback, but if it doesn't work out then, that would be super disappointing!

A new month mini update: The portfolio is the same, continuing to drip. Nothing really changing in terms of what stocks have been a valuable buy and those that are lagging and down after purchase. Still just waiting to see how it plays out over the next few months or so. Gathering data. Overall value is up 1.78% in November, expected yearly dividend is up $50 per year, but that is less than $5/month. Seems like not a lot of momentum. But after a year, I suppose that would be up by nearly $60 a month so not too bad? But I am sure hoping for more, and quicker. One marker for me to retire is 2k/month in dividends, but as of today, expected average monthly dividend form this portfolio is 1024.53. Still waiting for some momentum to build, but the balance for this portfolio is only $217K as of today, so will take a while to build or needs more capital put into it to see it advance more quickly. I don't have extra capital right now, and will be focused on ibonds first of the year. After that, I can see about some additional purchases here. Ideally I'd post my whole table for updates, but it just is too time consuming! Would be really great if I could copy from excel and paste, but that doesn't work.

if I counted the dividends thrown off by my growth portfolio, that ups me about 100/month. Although.....I wasn't "supposed to" count those.....

well - I guess I'm not so happy with the dividend portfolio after all. I sold the LFC which was going nowhere and I did not have good vibes about it.
but instead of going to another dividend stock, I bought a couple of tesla shares since tesla was way down today, and also picked up some vuzi with the spare change. Vuzi also down sharply so seemed a good time to buy in, only about 450 worth of it, but it seems to have potential.

brief EOY update.
Despite selling out one of the positions, the total amount of the others was only 1k less EOY than the end of november, so nice growth and portfolio pretty much the same size as before (I didn't put that money back into other dividend stocks). Several have increased their dividends and so the expected monthly dividend is still over 1k.
Two stocks gave an extra EOY dividend, DSL was very nice, nearly 4x the usual monthly dividend, after the usual monthly dividend. Main gave an EOY extra that was less than half of the usual monthly. It was nice to get those bonus divvies.
I had thought that the higher yeild stocks would slowly become a higher percent of the portfolio over time with dividend reinvestments, but that hasn't happened. Both RY and STAG have grown quite a lot and although their dividends are smaller percent wise, share price growth is really driving what becomes a higher percentage of the portfolio, but only becuase the ones that are growing are actually beating the SP500 while throwing off dividends so won't complain about that! But overall yeild is dropping slowly over the months as a result.
I am content to watch for now and keep reinvesting dividends.

CAIXY was up 20% from it's low. having said that, it is STILL not back to it's high. but banking stocks are looking better.
ALSO: I was WRONG about RWT. it didn't make it to $16 by YE. it has been floundering around between 12 and 14 since August, including a pretty scary drop on Friday that didn't hold up. this issue is deteriorating, but I can't fathom why. earnings are up, as are dividends. it now has a yield of 6.12% I am guessing it is dropping because TIPS yields are higher than this stock right now.
on the OTHER side of the coin we have OXSQ. although it peaked in MAY at $5.22, it has been trading between $3,75 and $4.5 since AUGUST, and paying a very respectable 10% dividend, without any signs of backing it down.
I think both of these issues will go higher next year. but nothing like they did in 2021.
