Last night I decided to start my taxes. Its a toss up between HR Block or Turbo Tax. After looking at both I decided to stay with HR Block Deluxe. However, their system requirements said Win 8.1 or higher. My computer is Win 7. So now I have to buy a new computer. My question is this. Do you think I could deduct the new computer on my taxes because I had to buy it to do my taxes to run the program. The tax program is deductible so why not the computer?

Turbo Tax would answer that question for you so you won't have to ask here. Just saying.

Do you have a business? If not, you most likely can not deduct the cost of Turbo Tax or the computer because they would be Miscellaneous Deductions and wouldn't meet the threshold.
If you are in business and are going to use the computer for business, yes. If only to prepare your tax return, you are pushing things.

I have used the HRB Deluxe online version on Windows 7. I don't buy the software - just use the web link and do my taxes.

Oh come on. Windows 7 !!! That went out of support over a year ago! Get with the times. Windows 10 is decent.

Ken, I liked Win 7, but my laptop screen died and I got a Windows 10 laptop. I just wish they still had the option to buy your OS and apps on discs instead of being a yearly wallet for MS.

I wouldn't necessarily call it a "yearly wallet". You buy OS and the updates don't cost anything....Same for apps - most of them, anyway. Office is different, of course.

I just use Google equivalents, if I really need that type of app.

I'm using an external 32" monitor for my laptop because my ham radio apps look too small on the internal display. I've noticed lately that the fan is getting noisy so I changed some power settings today and plan to look inside tomorrow. I do have it sitting on 1" corner supports to aid circulation. We have win10 on our shared pc but I rarely use it.

Did you get Office 365 with your Win10 computer? If you're paying a yearly fee, that's probably what it's for. If you don't need Office, just stop paying for it and use one of the free equivalents if you need Office features. There is no charge for Win10 updates, so you'll continue to get those after eliminating the Office 365 fee.

I really feel out of the loop. At home, I only use the ipad; work Win 10. Are you guys saying if I bought a new laptop, Win 10 isn't included, that I have to pay for it? I never heard of this!

No, it's included. Unless you're building your own machine, it will come with an OS. You just have to pay for an office365 subscription if you want that. Otherwise, Google docs work just as well, IMO.

I spoke with our office IT guy and he said I just need to download the Win 10 upgrade. He said my computer would handle it. He looked at my Belarc printout. He gave me this Microsoft site to download the Win 10 tool - Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)

I like Windows 10. Of course, I also like pineapple on pizza (on ham pizza--I'm not a psychopath).

Windows 10 is a huge improvement over Windows 8.1. That is the one I could not stand.

I never had that version. My niece said it was "haunted"
I went from XP to 7. Was able to bypass 8.1 using classic shell and then 10.
I think I started with Windows 3.0 at work. Lots of different versions of Windows over many years.

He gave me this Microsoft site to download the Win 10 tool - Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com) Before you download Windows 10 make sure it is not for only a temporary/limited period of time and after say 18 months it disappears unless you purchase it. When Win 10 came out I downloaded it over my previous version of Windows. It permanently removed my previous version of Windows. One day I turned on my computer and it stated my complimentary but temporary use of Windows 10 had expired. I had no version of Windows on my computer now. My desktop computer was now useless. I worked with a remote computer help company via my tablet in trying to purchase Windows 10 for my desktop computer. Took over four hours of phone calls and messaging back and forth on my tablet to finally code my way into my desktop and purchase Windows 10.

Have you downloaded it yet and does it work? I downloaded it and it works. No problems. But it did take 3 hrs to do so.
