The smell of ligustrum (privet) in bloom and freshly laid tar on the roads in summer reminds me of being a kid and in the family car as we drove on coastal towns' (like Old Lyme) small residential streets leading to the beaches on Connecticut's side of Long Island Sound.
Also as a kid we siblings slept in our home's screened-in porch during the New England summer months and the sound of rain or even a good thunderstorm was comforting as we never got wet.

OMG, that smell drove me up the wall. Haven't thought of it in years since it fell out of favor here for hedges and such. Just don't see it a lot any more. But glad it gave comfort to you
Love sitting out side on a really windy day with possibility of storms, well, except when winds reach 75 mph then time to consider heading north WOW this thread is interesting from what others are posting and what it is dredging up on my own radar - old folks memories and all that jazz. Thanks.

I have been thinking about this, and I'm struggling with mt introspection. Although, I will say when I am tired or stressed, watching reruns of certain TV shows distracts me.

When I worked for CPA I would come home and sit down and watch mindless sitcom for 30 minutes. ! This was my norm during tax season. I had some shows “taped” for that very purpose! Back in the VHS tape days

Love sitting out side on a really windy day with possibility of storms, well, except when winds reach 75 mph then time to consider heading north. DH loved a good thunderstorm. Sometimes he'd stand out on the enclosed back porch in the middle of one and just smile. I still think of him when one comes through. I find comfort in routine. I make plenty of opportunities to get outside of my comfort zone, even outside of my own country, etc. but when I'm home I always look forward to settling into bed early and watching whatever favorite Netflix shows I'm following and maybe reading a bit before going to sleep. Now that I think of it, I've never been able to do that in my life- shared a room with my sister, then with college roommates, kept my sole TV in the living room when single, had to consider my sleeping partner while married. I usually get to sleep very easily.

My comfort routine is to sit on the deck with a couple of beers, listening to music. I did that today. I have an Amazon Tap that is way old, but it still works. They quit making them a few years ago. However, today I bought an old-style cd player for the deck. All of my music isn't on Amazon, only what I have purchased or the songs that were grandfathered in before they quit letting you add stuff. I am looking forward to many more nice days like today on the deck. That was my escape when DH was so sick, and I couldn't get away from the house.

Since quarantine mine has been window shopping the farm section of craigslist. I just love the animals and day dream of having a farm that I could actually have them. Dh reminded me that I have a farm - small plot of the family farm, but I can't imagine moving there.
My job has blocked craigslist. Don't they know that has kept me sane for the past year!?!
Next month will be my annual 'I'm sure the city would let us have goats' freak out before I decide I need to get my house in order before adding more creatures to care for.

I have the check my Dad wrote for the second payment of my wedding dress. What my dad put in the memo puts a smile on my face. And his handwriting..only Dads. I'm not all the "the wedding is the best day of my life.." But, given everything now, I think my Dad was more supportive of my marriage than my mom ever was. I find comfort in that. My wedding day was a good day. DH and I were happy. You can even see it in the candid shots BIL took with a dumb point and shoot camera. I'm glad to have some reminders of that kind happiness.

I love pressure washing really dirty things, like mildewed siding or stained concrete. I also love cutting entangling vines off of trees. My yard butts up against scruffy woods with lots of honey suckle vine that will wrap around a tree, eventually cutting into the bark. Unraveling the mess and cutting it away from the tree feels like liberating the tree. And - digging potatoes. LOVE that! I won't say it comforts me but there is a tremendous satisfaction in it.

The smell of libraries/book stores. Instantly puts me at ease. I've decided to make it through 2021 I must build a mobile book fort that I will not come out of until this is all over.
As far as TV I can get sucked into Untold Stories of the ER for hours when I am stressed.

Okay, here’s a super weird one: At home, I’m barefoot 99.9% of the time. If I sit down, generally fold one leg underneath me. Then, as an absentminded self-soothing mechanism, I play with my toes.

John Hughes films from the 80's, especially ones starring John Candy.
And like drama, the smell of libraries is very comforting to me. It reminds me of my college years...
ETA: actually, the more I think about it I think the smell of the library goes way deeper than my college years. My mom took me there as a child and I always loved it.

When my father in law died, it had been a long road. We had younger kids, and my husband had been spending a lot of time with his parents, who live ~45 minutes away. It took a toll on both of us. The day after he died, but a few days before the funeral, my husband and I both took a day off work, and I took him to see Anchorman 2. We were the only people in the theater, and it was such a silly, dumb comedy. It took his mind off things (he is one that can really spin) for just a bit. I highly recommend a short escape into a dumb comedy to anyone who needs it.

I'm only steps away from being that klutzy and clueless!

I checked earlier to see if the one I have on hold has come in yet. It is still "on order". I am on wait list when they finally get it. They have about 19 on order but that is spread between 9 branches but one closest to me has 8 of those coming so there's hope that I won't be too far down the list.

Moving furniture. It comforts me for some weird reason. My living room has been through so many different arrangements since last July it's kind of disturbing.

Moving furniture. It comforts me for some weird reason. My living room has been through so many different arrangements since last July it's kind of disturbing. Instant gratification. Or maybe not so instant... When my furniture has been moved, I feel like I've accomplished something and things seem cleaner. Kind of like climbing into bed with clean sheets. There's a certain satisfaction in it. Funny/odd reading through this thread brought tears to my eyes, more than once. Group Hugs♡

Try as I might, nothing--absolutely nothing--comes to mind. I'm the weird one.
