I live alone. There is barely anything in the refrigerator section, but the freezer section is pretty full. I have considered getting a chest freezer.

I only have one. A coworker lives in a multi generation home and I think she said they have three.

I had one in my last house, and sold it to the buyer so I wouldn't have to move it. I need one here. there's three of us, eating little processed food or takeout. if I had more space, I could batch cook more - for both the pups and myself.

I have never had a second refrigerator. I always seem to have an excess of refrigerator space in my very normal size fridge. What I need and have had in the past is a second freezer. The freezer drawer in my french door style fridge is always packed so much, that it is difficult to open and close. I freeze everything, meats, soups, cupcakes, cookies, breads. Unfortunately there isn't any room for a second freezer in this house.

There's a spare fridge downstairs and a small chest freezer. Both are well used. I don't see our bill getting much lower.

We do, and it does not! It's mostly a place for the fella to keep his beer. It's old and likely inefficient and raising my electric bill - in addition to the beer bill.

No. We have a small chest freezer, but no second fridge. The only reason why I would see needing a second fridge for us would be to keep beer and soda cool - but for the most part, the garage does a decent job of this most of the year.

I have a fridge in the garage. I used to just fire it up for my outdoor parties in the summer, but for quite a while now I've left it on year round and kept it stocked with beer and a few other drinks for the neighbors.

We have a small wine fridge. We keep soda and sports drink in it for the kids (and wine in it for me!) After reading the article, I was wondering how many of the 2nd fridges in the $140k+ range were wine fridges.

I had a mini-fridge in the finished basement that DH wanted so he could keep pop nearby when he watched TV, but after his health deteriorated he pretty much stayed on the main floor. I let it run for a couple of years after he died and realized it was a waste of power. BF offered to buy it from me and he's now happily installed in the spare BR in his apartment that he uses as a home office. I don't have any need for one- plenty of room in the refrigerator/freezer in my kitchen since I don't freeze much. I cook a lot from scratch and may buy a pack of 6 chicken breasts every 6 months or so. Zero beef or pork in there right now. When I was younger we rented a house while we were waiting for one to be built and it had a deep freeze in the basement. Mom was a very industrious baker and she'd make 12 dozen cookies and stow them in the freezer. There were always considerably fewer when she went to retrieve them.

I have a small "chest freezer" in the basement - mostly because my side by side freezer/fridge has limited freezer space. Things like a whole turkey or frozen pizzas don't fit in it. My experience with "old refrigerators" are that they are energy hogs. If I was going to have a second fridge I'd opt for a new one - probably an energy star model (or maybe a gently used 2 or 3 year old model that someone was "selling".) My small chest freezer is a newer energy star freezer and added maybe $1.00 per month to my energy bill. It does save me money because I can freeze summer produce home grown or purchased on an amazing sale. I also freeze store bought "berries" when they are on on a "can't say no sale" when they are in season. I like cranberries so I usually put a 4 or 5 bags in the freezer (I make cranberry sauce, bake with them, depending on what summer fruit comes my way - I will make "jam" with them.) It's hard to find a bag o' cranberries in July. It's helpful around the holidays - I can buy a frozen turkey at a low price (usually well before the holidays) and it can hang out for a couple of weeks in the chest freezer. Same with some of the other holiday things. FWIW: I'm single - and managing what's in my fridge/Freezer and Chest Freezer takes some work (menu planning) and sometimes "baking/jam making planning". Buying and storing food you wind up throwing away isn't "saving". Also, once something has been in the freezer for 2 or 3 or more years - I'm sure it's gonna be all that tasty to eat. I wonder if having multiple refrigerators add to the waste of food problem that America seems to have?

I have a Jewish friend who during the Holidays moves all of the Kitchen stuff (food/utensils/stuff) that's not "kosher"? to her basement cabinets and fridge. The other times of the year the basement fridge is for soda/beer and extra 'cold' storage.
I believe this is her "compromise" with continuing family traditions.
(She has also mentioned it's a motivator to deep clean and to use up food (before the deadline of it going to the basement) and to review/discard all the stuff that has accumulated since the previous year. )
Oddly, it's not unlike my family's pre Thanksgiving/Christmas traditions - the deep clean, the use up food (to make room for holiday food/baking/cooking), the going thru stuff to be discarded/given away that's become clutter.

I have a second fridge in the shed that used for drinks. I also use it for overflow food in the summer (mainly for cookouts). We have to unplug it in the winter. I don’t want it inside because I don’t want people shlepping through the kitchen for drinks when we are in the pool

We have only a second freezer. It's a full sized freezer, and it lives in our garage. However, we have a 19 cubit foot refrigerator in our kitchen. If our kitchen was designed for a smaller fridge, it's quite possible we'd have purchased another refrigerator for the garage.

We must have a ton of stuff because the fridge on order is 28 cubic feet and the second one is staying.

I want to know why it was important to state that Mrs. Vincent is a churchgoer. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the topic of the article. (Yes, I'm weird and notice things like that and then wonder about them).
I have 2 refrigerators and a separate freezer. I got the freezer when I had a side-by-side refrigerator with limited space (because it also contained the ice maker/dispenser mechanism) and was not wide enough for pizza boxes and just kept it after I replaced that refrigerator. The second refrigerator arrived when my main refrigerator gave up entirely the day after I ordered its replacement, which was not scheduled to arrive for 2 weeks. I found a small, inexpensive fridgerbox at Home Depot for the interim, which turned out to be 3 days. It's currently living in the garage and will go into the basement when I have completed my Swedish death cleaning project and there is room for it (not long now, I hope!). It will hold my collection of flavored seltzer, soda, and other random stuff.

I'm thinking about getting a small one for the basement or garage. It's not a mini, but smaller than the small one my mom had at her house, and it's only $200. My DH only wants an extra freezer, but I think this would be the most useful, and I'm worried about our kitchen fridge dying, as it's 13 years old.

We have a refrigerator/freezer unit in the kitchen and a full size freezer in the basement. I'm not sure if the freezer has helped to save us money, but it's handy when we split a cow with relatives and it was comforting to know we had plenty of food when things seemed disrupted early in the pandemic.
We also have a second refrigerator/freezer in the basement that the previous owners left behind. We haven't plugged it in to see if it works and we forgot to get Habitat to haul it off while they were here. I am toying with the idea of having my husband take it out to his outbuilding/man cave to stock with drinks, but I am afraid that I may never see him again.

I used to have 3 refrigerators--a full-size one and 2 mini-fridges. One of the minis was in my closet at school, and I sold it along with a stand fan to another teacher when I retired.
We used the mini-fridge mostly for drinks. When it died, I didn't replace it. But I think I might before my sister comes in June. My refrigerator is a side-by-side so there isn't a lot of room in it.
We used to have a freezer in the basement, but DH didn't think we needed it so we gave it to my daughter when she was looking for one.

No. I have an upright freezer since my kids eat chicken nuggets by the pound. I also have a wine fridge we use mostly for water.
I could use a second fridge when I host Christmas abs thanksgiving but meh. Not worth the money.

I have a small chest freezer that I won't give up. It's perfect for filling up with meat that I get at a good price and for storing frozen cooked leftovers and homemade broth. I also keep frozen stouffer's for my boyfriend's lunches when he doesn't want a sandwich, and it is so helpful for meal prepping for me on nights I just pull something already made out for dinner instead of eating out.
We also have a small dorm sized drink fridge in the office. It was nice to pull them out of the fridge since I like to prep lunches and snacks during the work week which take up a lot of room.

Another one who has a second fridge in the shed. When it dies, it dies. We only use it for drink storage during the hot summer months. (Well, we actually didn't clean it out last summer, so it's got beer and stuff in it.) We also have a chest freezer in the shed. The freezer saves us money but the fridge really doesn't. We keep the fridge because it's nice to have cold drinks when company comes over and it's easier than people getting out of the pool and going into the house. This way all the water is where it won't cause any damage.

I live alone and have neither a need nor the space for a second fridge/freezer. I will admit though that the last year has been a period of Tetris freezer use as I have taken to go grocery shopping only once every three (and occasionally 4) weeks. So freezer space has been at a premium. A few months ago I even had to forego buying icecream LOL

I do have a separate chest freezer as well as the additional fridge in the garage. I don't know how I'd get by without the freezer since I buy so much in bulk and get a 1/4 of beef once a year. The extra fridge is just a luxury. My neighbors are the most hospitable people alive, so the least I can do is have their favorite drinks on hand whenever they happen to stop over. Like Saturday's random gathering to spy on the new neighbors. When they left one of them grabbed my LP tank for the grill to refill it. Today I caught him on the security camera running the new tank in and grabbing a beer.

We have one huge fridge in the kitchen. We have a chest freezer in the basement.
Technically when daughter is home she plugs the dorm size one in that is upstairs, so I guess that could count?

It's currently living in the garage and will go into the basement when I have completed my Swedish death cleaning project and there is room for it (not long now, I hope!). You made me LOL! When I heard about Swedish death cleaning a couple of years ago - I was like... DANG! I missed another "get rich quick scheme" opportunity. I have been joking about 'getting rid' of stuff so someone doesn't have to pay for a dumpster when I'm dead for years. In the beginning it was in reference to stuff I had... Now There's the thought process of "If I buy this thing or save this thing (I can't quite bring myself to throw/give away) and if it winds up in the basement/attic -- will I really use it - or will it become something for the Dumpster when I'm dead? " If it's gonna go to the dumpster - better to get rid of it now. I guess my trendy "decluttering" plan would be "Declutter via Dumpster?" or something along those lines.

No, we have a chest freezer in the garage. I'm glad we have it, but not totally sure if it's needed. We run a pretty tight ship with our fridge, we clean it out every week to make sure nothing old is in there. I grew up in a house where you had to think twice before eating anything out of the fridge because my mom thought everything was good way past the expiration.
Most of my friends growing up had a fridge in the garage or basement and I was very jealous because they had so many drinks in there.

In our primary we have a mini-fridge in the basement plus a chest freezer. We also had usage of a second range/oven and larger fridge in what is now a leased MIL unit.
Our lake place came with a second fridge in the garage. We haven’t owned that property long but we do have beverages in it. I can see it being more fully utilized during warmer weather and post Covid times with friends and family.
We have not considered whether this saved money or not.
