I'm posting as a public service announcement.
Back in late December I was contacted by Citibank Costo about a potentially fraudulent charge for Pay Stub Makr in the amount of $26.97. Never heard of them. While I was on the phone with the representative I logged onto my account and much to my surprise not only was there that unauthorized charge but seven additional charges totaling $4,373.76! Someone had fun buying flooring, photography services at Snappr, Nordstrom's and of course the obligatory trip to Pizza Hut. I have no idea how my information was compromised. The card has never left my possession and I don't shop on-line with this card.
Citibank reversed the Pay Stub Makr and Nordstrom's charges right away. With no additional reversals I called back two weeks later. I was told they had the info but it can take up to two billing cycles to finish crediting the account. I called again two weeks later and was told "No there are no more investigations pending". WTH?! I went through the fraudulent charges again and asked when I should follow up again. I was told two weeks. I called yesterday, rerouted through three people and left a message for the person who helped me two weeks ago. No call back. I then called the vendors for the biggest charges. I was promised these items would be reviewed by their legal departments and I would get a call back on Wednesday.
Today I logged on Citibank website. All the charges have been reversed.
That was a lot of work. If the card wasn't affiliated with Costco I would have cancelled it.
Share your stories of resolving credit card fraud.

My USAA visa got hacked. I was notified by USAA by a stream of text messages from them, so went online to look at charges.
Whomever used my card bought dental insurance, a resume service, enrolled in several online courses, several very expensive swimsuits from Australia and a buttload of prepper freeze dried food. There was a glitch between when the swimsuits got ordered and my card got shut down as the swimsuits never made it to the card, I just received them all in the mail 3 days later. I contacted the company to find out where they came from since this charge never made it to my card before they got shipped. Idiot who ordered apparently forgot to check the box that delivery address was different from billing address! I sent the swimsuits back, not my style and the amount of fabric wouldn’t have even covered my foot!
The prepper food I had the hardest time with. I was getting weekly deliveries and when I contacted the company to get them to stop sending it, customer service was sending me back to another place and apparently no one listened to their voice mail. After while, we had a mountain of boxes in the hallway needing to go back. I kept calling the company, the boxes kept coming. Finally I told their CS rep on the phone that they had 2 weeks to contact me and make arrangements to return the $3000 of food, or I’m dropping it off at the local food bank. I finally got contacted by them, food had gone to the food bank (and a good chunk to the homeless camp) 2 weeks earlier.
USAA sent me another card, reversed all the charges. No further issues.

"...photography services at Snappr..."
I wonder if Snappr has copies of the pictures taken where those who may be in the picture could be identified and the information give to the police.

According to the Snappr rep this was something outside of their regular "packages". Some photographer had to go meet these people somewhere. It will be interesting to hear from their rep if she calls back. I would love these fraudsters to get caught. More interesting to me are the flooring charges. Those were nearly $3,400 and had to be delivered somewhere...

Those were nearly $3,400 and had to be delivered somewhere... They really aren’t interested in this.....here’s another we had, with TD’s card. One morning, he asked me if I had purchased $800 in clothes from American Eagle. Nope, all my clothes I buy on my own cards, and I don’t buy from American Eagle. TD disputed the charges, and American Eagle not only sent TD a copy of the full order, but it included a name and address to whom the clothes were delivered. It should have been a slam dunk for a fraud charge. When TD contacted the local police, there was zero interest in doing anything with this information. We know where the person probably worked. TD had gotten a new card (from another that was compromised) and the card was used exactly once at BWW. The only other person who had the card was our waiter, a young male who wore a men’s small. The card was used that night.

The only time I've had my card ID stolen, it was all removed and taken care of in less than 30 minutes. The false charges were on Amazon and they reversed them as soon as I called. I had to go through all the hassle of changing card information for all my payees, though. That took days of work doing a couple at a time. That's the bad thing about having auto pay on so many accounts.

DH had credit card fraud where the person tried to buy a phone. They corrected it, but he had to fill out a police report in a different state. I don't remember all the details, but it was a PITA.
I had one, but I caught it at the "pending charges" stage. It was from somebody like Overstock although I don't think it was them. I called the CC company and told them that it wasn't my purchase, and they stopped it before it happened.
I check my CCs every couple of days. It is part of how I budget. I keep a "fake" entry for charges to, say, Chase Freedom dated for next month. All month long I post the charges as they occur. I imediately recognize something I didn't buy although it was only that once.
I barely use my debit card because the protections for that are very lax. Every once in awhile someone like the state of Alabama requires it to buy tags or else pay a horrendous CC fee. That's it.

The Walk of the Penguin Mich Many years ago my ex SIL used my ex BIL (they were brother and sister) card. They caught her at the dentist office. Ex SIL must have made quite an the police officer that day. He showed up at everyone of her hearings (and there were many since she failed to show up at some of the hearings) and she was eventually sent to prison.

I immediately recognize something I didn't buy although it was only that once. I do something similar so I can pay in full every month with no surprises. My Citibank Costco card was also compromised a couple of months ago. I hadn't checked charges in the last few days (I use my Fidelity Visa more often since they pay rebates monthly) and Citibank called me. There were 4 charges to Stamps.com- a few small ones and then a couple that were in the hundreds of $$$, which is typical- they run small charges through first as a test. All were reversed without my having to follow up and they sent me a new card.

I recently had two cards hacked. I was on a cross-country trip at the time, and got a text message about a charge to that card. It's usually my go-to card, but I hadn't used it at all on the trip. Sure enough, there was one small charge and then a big one at Adidas that was stopped before it went through. That card was cancelled and the fraudulent charges were removed from my account.
Later that night I got a call that my debit card had been hacked. There were charges from Burger King and Postmates, and then a bigger one at Best Buy. The Best Buy charge did not go through. That card was cancelled, and now I have to dispute the charges for Burger King and Postmates.
I had not used either of those cards on my trip. I won't be home for a few months so I had to have replacement cards sent to a temporary address.
Darn good thing I carry multiple credit cards when I travel. If I'd only had those two cards I would have been in a tough situation.

One time I reserved a hotel room at a Hampton Inn outside of DC in my name, but when we got to the hotel, we ended up using DH's card. I am not an authorized user on his card. A few days later I was checking his statement and saw several charges totaling under $500 for things like a gift certificate to a nail salon and flowers sent to someone...at the Hampton Inn we were staying at. I started calling the places the charges were from and had them pull the orders to see how they were charged since the card was in DH's wallet and the only time it was out was to swipe at Hampton Inn. Found that all the orders were done over the phone using DH's card and MY name. After talking to the police, found out that there was a ring of CC thieves who were people working the desk at local hotels and the Food Lion grocery store and stealing card numbers from customers. Filed a police report and said we would go back to testify, but never heard back from them. Got all the charges reversed.

I have avoided it so far, but I watch closely because I know it will happen eventually.
My friend just had his identity stolen. He is a retired attorney and is very careful. Somehow they got his information and applied for housing assistance from DHS, of course when they used his information to verify income, it was clear they would not qualify. However, he spent several weeks working to get his identity back, and closing out everything and opening new accounts. A huge pain in the ass.

My husband's Bank of America Mastercard got hacked a few years ago. The first we knew of it we received a bill for $15,000 in Facebook purchases, which was especially surprising as the card had a $6000 limit. There were pages and pages of small Facebook purchases that continued on well after the limit was passed.
I called B of A to report it and the service rep gave me a really hard time, saying that I must have a Facebook account and must have spent the money. After arguing a bit they mailed us some forms to fill out and declare they weren't our purchases and the charges were removed. The whole thing was very unpleasant, basically being attacked by the service rep acting like I was lying, it was my fault for not having an online account and monitoring it daily, etc. To which I was responding what was the point of having a limit if they would allow fraudulent purchases well over the limit? And why allow hundreds of Facebook purchases on a card that typically spends $15 a month for an online subscription?
I would have closed the account, but its the only card in his name and needed for his credit history, so we just continue to spend our $15 a month on it and haven't had any additional issues.

My Fidelity VISA and Sam's Club MC are both set up to text me whenever there's a charge on them. Hopefully if someone tries to use them I'll know about it right away.
