Ok. This post is near and dear to my heart as my daughter works as a home shopper at a big retail store. She is paid very little, yelled and even sworn at by customers and bosses, even though she is actually quite conscientious and good at her job. Please please consider the feelings of the poor shopper who is essentially risking his or her life for your convenience before you make a lot of complaints. One time my daughter was yelled at because the produce she selected was white in some areas that u can’t even see through the packaging. But yea, there was a complaint that went thru corporate and 6 weeks later, they really didn’t even know who chose the produce, but they decided to yell at my darling daughter. Sorry — she comes home with aching feet. Logs in about 5 miles a day, is timed when she goes outside to give the customers in their Porches and fancy cars their products, is sworn at but has to bite her tongue when a particular item isn’t on the shelf, as if it is somehow her fault. Doesn’t always get tips. Yes this is a pandemic. If you are fortunate enough to get a wage-slave to shop for you, then please tip very well and thank them for risking their life for you. And rethink complaining because it may take corporate 6 weeks to yell at someone who didn’t even make the mistake. Maybe get ur own cucumbers if it’s a problem for you. My daughter comes home in tears, I wish she would quit, but she needs the money. I absolutely believe you. I see how both the curbside pickup and home delivery folks are treated and it is not good. Some folks get way too much satisfaction out of making others feel small.
So lets talk about the feet instead. Work boots might change your daughter's life. I started wearing six-inch lace-up Lady Tims about four years ago and it has changed my life. I no longer wince and moan when my feet hit the floor when I get out of bed.
The boots are heavy, expensive, and definitely not femme but I strongly recommend wearing them. My body adapted to the extra weight of the boots quite rapidly and my feet and back feel much better since I switched. I wish my grumpy co-workers wore them too.
They are also warm and waterproof. I don't buy snow boots any more.
ETA: I probably should have described the boots as having a high-price point instead of expensive. They last about two years and cost $100 to $130. That probably works out to spending less on footwear than I was before.
I wear wool-blend (never cotton) socks with them year-round. That makes them considerably warmer and less stinky. I suspect that they would last even longer if I owned two pairs and wore them every other day instead of continuously.

I've done a variety of pickup and delivery options. When something isn't right, I just call the store or fill out the online form and ask for a refund. It's not a complaint; it's just something I ordered but didn't get (i.e., usable produce). I've never been denied a refund.
I resolved the problem of getting my grocery and restaurant orders delivered to the correct house by giving very specific delivery instructions and noting that I will be home, they should bring the food to the front door, ring the bell, and take the extra cash tip off the table by the front door. They will be looking for that cash tip, which means they will not be delivering to the wrong house. I also tip 15% via the website if it's food or grocery delivery. I generally leave enough extra cash to bring it up to 20%. It's a lot to spend for grocery delivery (not too much for restaurant takeout, though), but people who are doing these jobs need our help and are willing to expose themselves at the grocery store so I don't have to take that risk. They certainly deserve my generosity.
I've offered tips to the people who bring my order to curbside pickup, but at the store where I usually shop the people who bring the order to the car are not allowed to take a tip.

I haven’t been to a grocery store since last April . I use Instacart or one of my boys goes for me . I make sure I put what replacements I’ll accept and use chat to speak to the shopper . That being said , they do make mistakes sometimes . I once had an entire order not delivered . They delivered to house a couple blocks down . I’ve had wrong items , missing items , etc , if it’s something I really needed , I will let them know and they usually just credit me .
I always rate my shopper after delivery and give feedback as well . I’ve only gone back once and changed tip , and that was for the wrong house delivery . I changed it to 0 . Im very appreciative to the shoppers and tip well and try and give 4 stars and good comments .

Picky folx should definitely not subscribe to Misfits or Imperfect Foods. I rarely remember what I actually order but I do know when I get something that I didn't/wouldn't order--like the time I received cauliflower in my box --so I messaged them about it. They told me to keep it. I ended up tossing it in the compost before it ever went bad but that was when I lived in my apartment. If that were to happen again, I'm more apt to make a post on Next Door. And I never order anything large that comes in a glass jar. The stuff isn't well packed--it's tossed in and then tossed about on the truck--and I'd surely end up with a broken-glass-mess. No thanks. Anyone who works for Whole Paycheck should expect their customers to be pickier than most. The price point almost dictates it. Though it's not "picky" to expect not rotten produce. I would contact the company. Nobody wants produce that has to be tossed the next day. Even fresh from the garden lasts a few days. I like to think I'm just regular picky about my produce, and I found Imperfect Foods to be incredibly disappointing. I got about 3-4 deliveries from them and gave up. I was bummed because people kept saying such good things but I thought the quality was very bad. I want not rotten produce. I hardly think that makes me a Karen but apparently I am wrong. All four grocery stores here will do exchanges if you get something that was bad. Aldi had someone out and checking/tossing strawberries when I showed them four boxes I had looked at were moldy. They didn't tell me stop being so damn picky their stocker was having a bad day. I am also disappointed with Imperfect Foods and am likely going to cancel. They have been good for non-produce stuff and we've gotten to try a few things but I can't justify the expense much longer. I am trying to hold off at least till the Farmer's Market starts but if I get another box like last time I am done.

I am wondering about the delivery to the neighbors house. How well are the house numbers displayed? On many houses here the only place to see the house number is on the curb. And while we have no snow, many people still WFH and cars are parked in front of those numbers. That may not the problem where Ruhk lives but a nice covering of snow on the house number would cause the same problem. Just wondering...

There is no reason to frame this as a complaint. Expecting to receive what you've paid for does not make someone a complainer or diva. And the vast majority of people who ask to have an error resolved do so in a reasonable and tactful way. Are there assholes? Yes, there have always been assholes. They used to just yell at the checkout person instead of the person who delivered it to the car, I guess.

They used to just yell at the checkout person instead of the person who delivered it to the car, I guess. And you can usually tell who those people are. I had a guy get mad at me on the phone when I told him the reason we can't do half extra cheese on a pizza is because the cheese melts as it bakes. WTF am I supposed to do defy physics? The person whose pizza got burnt and was polite about it? We remake it and don't charge. It was an honest mistake but they have a right to not burnt pizza. We can't fix the problem if you don't tell us what it is. We want to know so we can improve. Just don't be a dick about it. I'm sure Whole Foods wants to know about rotten produce and misdelivered orders so they can check their procedures. If everyone stays silent and never says anything it doesn't get fixed. Things don't get fixed business starts to go away because people don't want to deal with the BS after awhile.

I haven't tried curbside pickup or delivery since March and April 2020. There were no slots available then at Aldi, Walmart or Kroger during daylight hours. We tried ordering shelf staples like canned soups through Walmart.com and lost about $30 because the soups leaked during transport and they wouldn't refund us. We tried ordering cleaning supplies through Walmart.com as well and they leaked too. If I wanted to get toilet bowl cleaner with bleach all over my hands, I would squirt it there instead of picking up a soaked cardboard box.
A local TV station ran a piece on pickup and delivery through local stores like Target, Kroger, Walmart, etc. and only about 90% of items ordered and charged for were received. Many folks felt it was worth losing 10% of their food and $$ for the convenience. I don't.

That's nuts! I've been ordering from Instacart and safeway curbside since April. I've only had a few issues that are resolved quickly. Except for Walmart. I tried them once, never again. Im not going into the store to fix a problem. But otherwise, I've had a good experience. I always tip instacart in cash. I tip well if they follow the instructions to put everything on the outside table.

I've had decent luck with Walmart pickup for non-perishables, cans, cleaning supplies. well, except when they were totally out. I'm actually planning a BJs run tomorrow morning when it will hopefully be dead.
DQ - definitely trying to hold.out for farmers markets here, too. apparently there is a weekly one on the "town common" of the development across the bogs. you know I'm checking that out once it starts!

I can't think of others either but could have happened? numbers are pretty clear I think.

Wow. This is such a tough crowd! Not a lot of empathy here. Lol. Seem to be more concern with the spoiled cucumbers than any acknowledgement that maybe these workers give it their all and to tip generously.
The angst I see over the 6 cucumbers is very interesting....in a pandemic.
By all means, ask for your money back for the cucumbers. But all I’m saying is tip generously. Very generously.
But I will probably get flamed for that too. Wow.

Did you miss the fact they didn't even deliver the stuff to the right house? If they had delivered it to her house I would probably ignore the rotten produce. When the problems pile up, yes, I'm bringing it to the company's attention and no that doesn't make me a bad person. I'm paying for a service, I have a reasonable expectation of that service being delivered.
No one says oh its a pandemic, they are having a bad day when I make a mistake at work.

Did you miss the fact that I said to complain already, about 3 times? It’s at least not a life and death situation, and it has had lots of posts...
.But — I just find it sad that no one can say that — yes, that must be a difficult job, etc, when I talked about my daughter and other people in her work situation. I feel for these people working in these jobs, that is all. Yes, mistakes will happen.
No acknowledgment that yes — maybe it is a good idea to maybe tip a bit better in a pandemic. I apologize if I didn’t see anyone post about maybe tipping them a bit better. That was also a question the OP had — did she tip enough.
That is all I have. Have a nice night.

Did you miss where I pointed out that I tip and very generously, in cash? When there is an issue, I call the customer hot line. I shop from quality stores. We are polite, they are polite. They did their best then............Cash, large tip, not sure what the problem is.

Thank you, Happai for a very sweet post. I’m not sure how to quote so I couldn’t quote you here.
I will tell my daughter about the work boots. She will appreciate it, I’m sure! Take care.

I also tip more then I used to. I've never had anything worth complaining to the store over, but politely asking for a correction is still ok. Sounds like your daughters bosses are a problem if they wait 6 weeks to give feedback and then criticize instead of provide feedback. I don't plan on doing a ton of delivery, but curbside is the bomb. Never having to step foot in a target again! I'm grateful for all essential employees that are going in to work. Dh said that their clients are also much quicker to blow up lately, and unfortunately its on the receptionists that go to the clients car to get their info and bring the pets in. Weird times, and no one is at their best anymore.

But I will probably get flamed for that too. Wow. You seem to be very biased and very emotional over this issue. My husband is self-employed and his business has him in and out of grocery stores all day, every day. I can assure you that his customers would not be ok with his quality dropping because he is putting himself at risk due to the pandemic. And guess what, his customers don't pay him extra for risking his life, either. Through August I worked for an essential business. Our guys were out and about in the public in the middle of a pandemic. I can assure you that we would not have been ok with their quality dropping (people could have died). And our customers never tipped because it isn't that kind of business where that is customary. Believe it or not, there are millions of people that worked day in and day out all throughout the pandemic. Most of those people were happy to have their jobs and didn't get tips from anyone to do so. We should always be kind and courteous when dealing with people. But we should never accept poor work performance, even in a pandemic. I also think places should just pay people and get rid of the tipping system. Then everyone gets paid fairly, you aren't at the mercy of someone that doesn't realize they are supposed to tip and customers know the price going in. Why should a tip be based on price? I would be paying more for someone to pull me 6 lobsters than if they got me a full cart of food. Charge an hourly rate or a cost per but this tipping % based on price is silly. And leads to nothing but bitching.

A family friend works for instacart and she loves it. Takes jobs when she wants them, ultimate flexibility so she can be with her kids when she needs to. So I like to think it can be a good gig for the employees too.

So I like to think it can be a good gig for the employees too. Absolutely. Just like my daughter was a bartender before everything got shit down. She made more money as a bartender in two days than she does at her full time job. She had some people that tipped shit but the good tippers more than made up for it. She didn’t dwell on the idiots because overall she loved her job and made a LOT of money doing it. I belong to a local FB group and I see a lot of bitching from the people that work for food and restaurant delivery services. That’s why I’m saying there should be a fee and that’s it. If a person wants $20 to make the delivery, that should be stated up front. I get that time is valuable and they should be paid fairly. Which is why I don’t believe in the tipping concept. If I order an item from the internet, the delivery charge is known. I agree to it and that’s that. Makes life much simpler.

And quite frankly the entire goal of your posts appears to be to guilt people into tipping exorbitant amounts of money regardless of whether service is good, bad or indifferent. All sorts of people are having problems during these times. People have lost friends, family and jobs. People are stuck home trying to work with little ones around. People are being impacted in all sorts of ways. Perhaps the person who lost a job and doesn't have a ton of money is a little more upset than normal when their order for food, which they may be needing and struggling to pay for, is not right. And your advice is continuously just to give the person who gave it to you an enormous tip for their troubles? We all appreciate front line employees, whether they be retail, restaurant, repair, delivery, teachers or most especially healthcare right now. There are so many people out and about serving people every day. Conversely there are lots of people at home wishing they could also be out and about! I'd encourage you to step back and not make it all about you and your daughter. While no one should ever get treated poorly at work, it's possible that sometimes when she gets called on a mistake at work the other person actually may be having a worse day than her, regardless of what kind of car they drive, you know?

Wow. I never said to tip if service was lousy. My purpose was to remind people how difficult these jobs are, and most of you get that. That is really nice.
And as u pointed out, just because someone’s day might have been lousy, that is no reason to yell at service people. So no, I don’t buy it that my daughter should say — oh that person swore at me because we were out of peaches, but I will just let that slide as she must have just stubbed her toe. Now that’s just silly.
What is even sillier is this post.

Everyone here gets that essential jobs are difficult, and those who use these services appreciate it, and tip appropriately. Some jobs suck and just about everyone has done it....some even in as difficult (or more difficult) conditions.

I’m not lambasting people at all. People on here are saying “I’m too emotional” because I told about my difficulties my daughter and others have faced as a personal shopper during a pandemic .
Mistakes are going to happen in the service industry — and if it makes people upset, either do your own shopping or complain about it, do whatever you want.
I was trying to paint what my daughter goes through as one of these workers, and some people got what I we trying to say.
Everyone is free to do what they want to do, use food shopping service, or don’t use food shopping service. Tip or don’t tip.
Just don’t blame the service people if they are out of peaches. That’s all I’m saying. . This sort of behavior happens to her several times a day, and she is actually very good at her job. . No she doesn’t work at Amazon. It’s a major food chain.
If this behavior doesn’t apply to anyone here, then we are all good.

"Upset" and asking if she should say something are not exactly synonymous.

I guess in case we had missed it in the previous posts. I'm sorry you are struggling. I'm sorry that your daughter finds her job incredibly hard. But your posts (fairly rudely) demonstrate that you are not actually reading what people are writing, you are just kind of having your own disagreement in your head with everyone who you think has ever been snippy with your daughter and writing it down here as though it's all of us. But thank goodness you've let us know we are all good now since you made sure we "get it".

A family friend works for instacart and she loves it. Takes jobs when she wants them, ultimate flexibility so she can be with her kids when she needs to. So I like to think it can be a good gig for the employees too. Miss T, I’m with you. We should adopt a more European compensation model, where people are paid an appropriate wage and where any tip given is for extraordinary service, not part of the employee’s basic compensation. I wonder if the shift to $15 an hour minimum wage will change tipping practices? It seems to me that if servers receive an appropriate base wage, 15% and 20% tips should largely go away.

Minimum wage for a server in Iowa is $4.35. So when business is down or if you have a bad tipping day, you pretty much wasted your time.
I agree once we get to a living wage of something like $15 an hour, tipping should go away. My UK friends refuse to tip when they visit and I had to be told not to tip when I visited the UK because I didn't know any better.
They were also surprised when I tipped housekeeping at hotels.

Would servers get the proposed $15 minimum wage? In almost every state currently, "Tipped employee minimum wage" is not the same as Federal minimum wage. I really haven't been paying enough attention to the current discussion on raising minimum wage to know if they mean for everyone.
