Trudeau thanked Biden – calling him "Joe" – as he emphasized the U.S. and Canada are "each other's closest allies, most important trading partners and oldest friends."
The Canadian prime minister said they agreed to an "ambitious new partnership" that will guide the work on COVID-19, climate change, and rising inequality.
Ahead of their meeting, Biden and Trudeau gave brief remarks to the press from the Roosevelt Room, where the Canadian prime minister appeared via video for the virtual meeting. Biden was seated at one end of the table, with Vice President Kamala Harris to the right of him. The Canadian prime minister was piped in on two screens in the room.
Biden told Trudeau that he looked forward to meeting in person as soon as they get the pandemic under control.
"The United States has no closer friend than Canada," Biden said. "That's why you were my first call as president, my first bilateral meeting."
Trudeau thanked Biden for "stepping up in such a big way on tackling climate change."
“U.S. leadership has been sorely missed over the past years,” he said.
