I thought you all were joking when you said he was in Cancun, but I just saw on the news it is apparently true. Holy Cow Batman! Do you think Texas voters will remember this come election time? I bet there is video of beach and snow being stored to remind them.

At least that furniture store owner is helping out again. www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/texas-is-frozen-and-in-crisis-a-furniture-store-owner-has-emerged-as-a-hero-again/ar-BB1dNLSL?ocid=msedgntpSince Tuesday, about 350 people a night have taken him up on the offer at two of his three stores, while up to 800 have come in each day to warm up and get coffee, snacks or a meal in the cafeteria.
While the store has power supplied by a generator filled with 15,000 gallons of diesel fuel, only one faucet is working because of frozen pipes, said McIngvale.
He brought in portable toilets and rigged a special flush system in the restrooms with extra stores of water.

The optics really are bad. I am sure they had already paid for this vacation to coincide with the senate break. However, what they should have done is sent his family and he should have stayed in order to see what he can do to help his fellow Texans. He could have joined his family later.

Wrong Thread. Supposed to be on What are you doing right now...but wow, I am impressed by the Furniture Store owner. He is the one that should be the Mayor or the Governor of the state.

So if I want to gift my son $30,000 for a down payment on a duplex, and the tax free IRS limit is $15,000/year. Can I make it $15,000 from DH and $15,000 from Me and have the whole 30,000 be tax free this year? Do I need to transfer the $ in two separate $15,000 increments (I would probably do a transfer from My account to his if that is ok, otherwise I can write an old fashioned Check). LOL! Were you asking Ted Cruz? Wrong thread?

bean29Husband can give 15K and you can give 15K. You don't have to worry about two separate transactions, its just attribution. However is the account just in your name? Then I might transfer to husband and let him give them 15K, just dotting my i's so to speak. You can also always give more than that. You will just have to file a form at tax time, but if your estate isn't likely to be very large, its unlikely you'll ever hit lifetime limits which are currently 11 million single, 23 million married, so no one would actually owe taxes, they just like to keep track.

You have to wonder how such a seasoned politician got caught so flat footed.

You have to wonder how such a seasoned politician got caught so flat footed. He's an insensitive jack ass who is basking in his perceived immunity with the Trump supporters? I mean Trump came within a hairs breath of getting Pelosi and Pence killed and people still support him as a candidate in 2024. So what's a trip to Cancun when your state is facing the apocalypse?

Thanks, I was going to move my Question, but since you answered it...I will just let it go poof. Yeah. LOL. I don't think we have to worry about lifetime limits, my kids will be lucky to inherit a tenth of that. Just worried about annual limits. A very nice duplex went up for sale across from DH's office. Built in 1979, but DH said there was a fire and it was extensively about 10 years ago. DS needs 5% for a house and 15% for a duplex. BTW, I would never ask Ted Cruz for advice on anything. I am getting message to Call Senator Johnson and tell him to approve the Stimulus bill. I don't call him for anything. He only represents me in theory. I really don't think he cares what I think, so I won't bother to call his office. He and Cruz are both swamp creatures.

I can’t believe that he’d think the optics of this would be good. Intelligence definitely lacking, or he simply doesn’t care. Neither bode well.

He's going on vacation to Cancun in the middle of pandemic while the people he represents are freezing to death. I'm going with he just doesn't care. Stay at home and don't travel advice is only for us non politicians.

He opens his stores often after hurricanes for people to stay in. He sends out his delivery trucks to get hot food into areas cut off by water/ice. Those same delivery trucks will pick up people to bring them back to the store to shelter. He even allows people to bring their pets. He feeds & shelters folks on his own dime. After storms he will donate furniture to the families he sheltered. He supports battered women shelters, homeless shelters, feed the poor charities, helps rebuild & furnish homes destroyed in natural disasters (often because of hurricanes & flooding). All with no strings attached. No one is charged for his help, no one is preached at or required to listen to sermons/sales pitches. He has done more for Houston that any other business owner in the history of Houston. There's a reason why he's so loved & well known to Houstonians. At one point in the 1970's he was just some store owner with a run down building by the freeway & the goofy guy who jumped up and down in the Gallery Furniture commercials yelling "I'll save you MONEY!", but he's probably the best thing to happen to Houston that didn't involve a government official. All Houstonians, even ones that don't live there anymore (like me) love Mattress Mac & what he means to Houston. The city is a better place because of him & what he does for everyone.
