Or throwing the defense? Could the poor performance be deliberate?

Trump now has a problem hiring competent lawyers to represent him. He has ruined his reputation within the law firm industry.
Just last week his first pick of lawyers walked out on him.

I know this still might slide off him, but does make you think. Might? He'll be acquitted no matter how incompetent they are, and they are incompetent. It doesn't sound to me like they know enough about the constitution to be doing it deliberately. In any case, it really doesn't matter because the repubs have already said they've made up their minds and won't vote to impeach.

Well, his lawyers do tend to either end up in jail or being sued for enormous amounts of money. He’s down to the crazy lawyers now.

I don't know if they are good attorneys within their actual field or even what their field is, but they are not good at the task they are attempting. Even disregarding that there is no real case they can make here, and that they only came on board a week ago, that was a brutal performance. What it demonstrates even more is that Trump is going to be in big trouble if he gets charged later in other courts. Because he cannot attract good lawyers to represent him at this point, he will get badly hurt in an actual court of law. And I can't wait!

It doesn't really matter, he will never be convicted. They are scared of his base. Have you talked to any Republicans? They have every excuse in the book.
I hope they don't try that LAW AND ORDER crap again, I might die of laughter!

I don't think they're throwing it. Pretending to be incompetent would hurt what credibility they have left. Plus the worse they do, the worse the GOP Senators will look for acquitting Trump. That being said, if I were one of the lawyers and wanted to throw it, I wouldn't even bother with legal arguments. Instead, I'd make the Senate sit through my Sock Puppet Theater rendition of 50 Shades of Gray.

I think that has a lot more to do with his difficulty getting anyone half decent. Pay enough and most of them will plug their nose and do the job, claiming that everyone deserves a vigorous defense.

Apparently Trump was furious about the crappy job his impeachment lawyers were doing. My first thought was ‘guess they won’t get paid.’

I read (cnn? New York times? not sure) that hinted that perhaps the change in presentation order was done because of the opening the Democrats presented. I wonder if the "boring, rambling, WTF is he talking about??" speech was to try to disable/derail the emotions/thoughts the Democrats had stirred up with their opening video/presentation.
I suspect trump's lawyers are skilled at turning "shit" into "gold" - that's how they got where they are today. And that they will be using those skills primarily during the trial.
If anything, it might indicate that the opening volley from the Democrats have set trump's running to do "clean up" rather than present their case as originally planned. I'm guessing that was/is the main plan of the Democrats... take control and then try to keep it.
I strongly suspect that trump's team doesn't have a "solid winning" game plan. I think they will be playing "catch up" and "clean up" for most of the trial.

Well when the entire argument is "Me stable genius, Me won election. Democrats meany bad liars with pants on fire" it would take an Oscar winning script writer to be able to flesh that out into a full competent impeachment trial case.

I had the thought this morning: "Could this be a career-ending moment for Bruce Castor? Even if the GOP senators do not vote to convict, his performance will not be forgotten."

The impeachment managers are doing a good job today. A shame the majority of republican senators aren't listening.

I want to see a sock puppet version of 50 Shades of Grey. I am betting it will be far more entertaining that either the books or the movie.

The impeachment managers are doing a good job today. A shame the majority of republican senators aren't listening. Why would they waste their time listening? They've already decided because, yanno, they took an oath "that in all things appertaining to the trial of the impeachment of Donald John Trump, president of the United States, now pending, I will do impartial justice according to the Constitution and laws, so help me God." Impartial = doodling, reading, scrolling through phones, texting.

So back to the original topic. Per Alan Dershowitz and Chris Christie, yes they are incompetent Christie even remarked he would use castor to show baby prosecutors what not to do.
