Recalled products associated with SportMix pet food have sickened hundreds of dogs, including at least 110 that have died, according to a new report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The agency’s update on Wednesday came almost a month after Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. announced a recall on December 30, 2020 of certain batches of Sportmix pet food products. At the time the FDA said it was aware of 28 dogs that had died and another eight that became ill after consuming the product.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Agriculture, is investigating certain Sportmix pet food products manufactured by Midwestern Pet Food, Inc. that may contain potentially fatal levels of aflatoxin.
The recall was then expanded earlier this month to include all pet foods containing corn that were also manufactured in the company’s Oklahoma plant, and having an expiration date on or before July 9, 2022. Since then, the agency said it had been made aware of more than 100 dogs that have died and another 210 that are still sick.
Investigators believe the cause of the illness is aflatoxin, a byproduct of the corn mold, Aspergillus flavus, which can kill pets when it’s present in high levels.
