Husband is going for first Friday, I’m the next Tuesday Finally got an appointment for DIL who is a cancer survivor and has lung damage. Her first appointment is Saturday We all already have 2nd appointment s What a relief. The process of getting an appointment is ridiculously complex, no central sign up but about 200 individual websites with log in registration, different questions and captcha etc etc I’m hoping to watch the FDA advisory board on Friday for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine Watched both the Pfizer and Moderna adv boards and was very impressed at the great job done by these companies

I have a question I hope the experts here can answer. My almost 7-year old granddaughter asked me why the vaccine wasn't going to be used for kids. My immediate guess was that it hasn't been tested on them and then I wondered how DO you do a drug trial with kids? I tried to explain at a 7-year old level why kids themselves weren't really equipped to decide to participate in a drug trial and parents might be reluctant to make that choice for them. I'm sure there are financial incentives involved but that just means that the kids whose parents could use the money are the guinea pugs for kids whose parents can wait till the test results are in.
So... will we ever get a COVID vaccine for kids?

Frequently, you want to see if there are side effects and it is safe in older groups, if it is something that does not affect children only. Once you are confident of that, testing on children can begin. Parents are the ones who have to consent. I am not aware if financial considerations are used in children, but I have concerns about motivation if they are

So... will we ever get a COVID vaccine for kids? There will be a vaccine for kids, but you are correct in that doing these on kids opens up a can of worms. This is complicated by the fact that kids have the lowest risk of COVID of all age groups. I suspect because all of this, the bar will be much higher than it is for adults. Decisions are usually made by the difference of risk between getting the disease and risk of vaccine side effects. So they are going to move more slowly and carefully. Thinking about this, it is entirely possible that COVID may wind up being a childhood disease. The commonalities between COVID and things like chicken pox/measles/mumps/etc. are that kids get it, are briefly miserable, recover quickly and are immune. If an adult gets any of these, it becomes a much more serious disease.

If an adult gets any of these, it becomes a much more serious disease. Thanks! I'm going to relay this to DDIL since I'm now back home. Interesting comparison with the old "childhood diseases". They did eventually develop vaccines for them but I agree- I've had all 3 and DS had chicken pox. There were the real horror stories, especially around German measles, but most of us did OK- and I have a 1-year old great-nephew who just got over COVID. Parents and older brother didn't get it. Closer to the OT- vaccine appointments seem to be opening up here in the Kansas City area- I'm seeing lots of reports of people getting them at CVS and HyVee, a large local grocery chain. Well, I feel a bit silly now for jumping at one an hour way but I'm going to stick with it. There are plenty of people who need an appointment close to home more than I do.

Kids 12 and up though are in trials. I'm hoping ds can be vaccinated shortly after his 12th birthday.
Not covid related, but ds has type 1 diabetes and I was contacted recently about him participating in a study for the automated pancreas. He would have gotten a $50 Amazon card for each appointment which he was thrilled about until we got to the blood draw and he nope'd out. It would have been a lot of work for me to go through just for those gift cards (if I was going to keep them instead of rightfully letting ds choose and keep them if he had participated).
I would have been happy to do it because of the major benefits that technology will provide ds when approved. A covid test would be harder to give ds the ok for, but still the chance to get him vaccinated as soon as possible would be tempting even if it was part of a study.

The decision to not get vaccinated was made for me by a local clinic that sent a text message that they had vaccines and people recovering from covid 19 are not eligible for 90 days. I was wavering until then. Cancelled appointment. Good news, CVS will be offering vaccines after 2-25-21. No locations were given. Edit: H. has an appointment for shot 2 very early in the morning. He said I have to go in case he has a reaction. I have not driven a vehicle other than a golf car since last October. If I have to drive, it will be 3 very busy freeways. Yikes. Today I will take the care out and drive the neighborhood

Question for The Walk of the Penguin Mich or pulmonarymd. I read some statistics about the J&J vaccine. It said that is had an efficacy (sp?)of 66.9% at 14 days after inoculation and 66.1% at 28 days. If correct, would this mean/imply that the protection of this vaccine gets less rather quickly or is that an unwarranted extrapolation of those numbers?

Likely a difference of 1 patient. Ignore those numbers. What is important is the prevention of severe disease, hospitalizations, and deaths. Those are all >85%. Good enough for any vaccine. It just looks bad because the other vaccines are amazingly effective, beyond our wildest dreams

I would read this more that the effectiveness does not change statistically between 14 to 28 days. I would be more interested in seeing what the data looks like at 45-60 days.

I'm not a doctor. The first question on the screening where I get the vaccine is Do You Feel Sick Today? I was verbally asked other questions and a cold was among the questions. I don't know if a Yes would have disqualified me or not. One of the GOP Iowa Legislator's today said the pandemic is over so we need to quit funding like it's ongong.

I am so excited!!! DH and I are scheduled for the AZ vaccine on Sunday! As of today here (France) any doctor can give it in private practice, if they ordered it. Sadly, few docs have. I've been checking the online scheduling platform 24/7. Both DH and I were already signed up because we use that platform for doc appts, not just the vaccine. An ophthalmologist 30 min away had two appts left on Sunday. I grabbed one, it took me 20 seconds to sign up. By then, the second appt was gone. I emailed the doctor (who I've never met) and explained that the second appt for my DH had disappeared while I was making mine. He emailed back!!! He said bring your DH, I'll vaccinate both of you. It seems too good to be true!!! We are so thrilled! I can go back to school (in 3 weeks, per my GP friend in NY). And hopefully it will facilitate being able to travel to the UK to meet our new granddaughter when she arrives in May.

My friend E, an eldercare nurse, was scheduled for her second shot late last week. She had Covid VERY badly in early Feb, before people knew much. She was so sick, she finally made a will.
I told her, they are now saying that if you've had Covid, you shouldn't get the second shot.
So she called the French health authorities. They said yes, there's talk of skipping the second shot if you've had Covid, but nothing has been decided yet. So we insist that you get the second shot, per government protocol.
E told me "It's a good thing I made the will after getting Covid, because if I hadn't, I would have done it after getting the second shot." Happily her reaction only lasted 24-36h.
I would have preferred not to get the vaccine on a Sunday since I'm working Monday morning (in case I have a bad reaction), but hey!

I don’t mean to jump in line if not warranted on the vaccine. However, is being a cancer survivor qualifying as a medical condition? I didn’t think it was so, but someone said I would qualify... I guess I should ask my Doctor?

We check the Walgreen site everyday for vaccine. My wife saw they had openings and signed me up. Told me to watch my email for confirmation. Then it went poof on the website saying I didn't have one. She called the pharmacist. He asked if she had a confirmation number. She did and he confirmed both of my appointments.

I'm getting my first shot on Sunday! I got appointments at Walgreen's, too, ken a.k.a OMK. That seems to be the place to go. A friend of a friend who has made it her mission to get people signed up helped with the logistics and made the appointments for me as I was having no luck despite regularly checking the sites I knew about. The first shot is in Lutherville, about a 45-minute drive from me since I refuse to use the Beltway if I can avoid it, but the second is at a Walgreen's just a few miles away. Yay!

Don't discount some of the small, local pharmacies too. Some areas they are also giving the shots. I got my first one at Walmart pharmacy & will get my second one there in a couple more weeks.
My DH got both of his at our local county health dept. He got his second one earlier this week. He has more health problems than I do...but we are both over 75!
