Chucks and Pearls

I’ve been seeing a lot on FB about Chucks and pearls lately and didn’t know why until I learned that a lot of women will be wearing both for the inauguration tomorrow, in a show of support and solidarity for Kamala Harris.

I’m late, as usual. Did you all know this already?

I don’t own any chucks or pearls lol. When I realized what it was about, it was too late to buy chucks (I’ll be at work and they aren’t comfortable enough to me for me to work in anyway), or pearls. Not that I would’ve spent a bunch of money on a pearl necklace just for that either.

I do have a ring my Mom gave me years ago, that has a pearl in it, along with some small diamonds. I rarely wear it, but I’ve decided to wear it tomorrow. I have a choker made of fake pearls, I might throw that on too, even though it will look crazy with jeans and a hoodie. 

Is anyone else here doing the chucks and pearls tomorrow?

I've been off the internet mostly the last five days, so I didn't know about this. I don't own chucks, but I do own pearls.

I knew people were making a big thing about her wearing chucks with her business suits. 


I haven't done it in a while, but back in my early/mid 20s I was often found out at a bar in a sparkly dress wearing knock-off chucks that were a black pinstripe.

I didn't know this, but I did know about the magazine cover that went sideways recently, for Harris. she did a shoot with full-on professional, and more casual shots with her Chucks, and the mag picked the Chucks pic over a suit one for the first woman VP. bc yanno, women are all about casual in offices we had to fight to access. 🙄

I’ve had a side gig every fall since 2014, except for last year because COVID. Business casual is ok, but I tend to lean more toward just business like attire. The year before, I started wearing plain Cole Hann sneakers with my trousers and blazers because they’re so comfortable and I do a lot of walking and standing. Actually, I’ve started wearing those and similar style sneakers with whatever, including sundresses. I even have some plain Keds with sequins on them that are my way of saying I know I’m supposed to be dressed up and I am, except my shoes are more comfortable than if I’d worn heels. It’s a whole vibe and look.

I've never owned chucks, not even back in the 80's when I should have since I was the age it made sense to when they first became fashionable.

I bought my first ever pair last year to wear on stage as the Oscar half of The Odd Couple.

I prefer the low tops. And target often has decent knock offs. Though now I'm becoming an old grump and prefer similar looking shoes but with a better footbed

My kids have always liked chucks. My son wanted to wear black patent leather chucks to his prom instead of dress shoes, so I bought them for him.  I had no idea they even made them before that lol. That was my introduction to sneakers with dress clothes and formal wear. He pulled it off very well.

DD’s kids wear chucks. They usually have a couple pair at a time.

I don't have Chucks and my pearls are fresh water pearls. That should be good enough and I'll wear those tomorrow. Will go nicely with my baggy sweater and leggings (socks only on my feet).

I don't have Chucks (but now I want some), but I have already fished the pearls I inherited from my mother out of the safe to wear tomorrow as I watch the inauguration in my usual yoga pants and T-shirt ensemble.  No one will see them but me, but I don't think that matters.

You’re right, it doesn’t matter! Good for you, wearing them anyway.

Fun!  Thanks for the idea. I also have no Chucks but will wear my grandmother's pearls with some sort of sneaker and assume that she would highly approve, if she were still among us.

DD1 loves her chucks. She has Hello Kitty, Frozen, and a pair of mint green chucks. She also has a pair of tie-dye vans.

After my last kiddo, my feet got too wide, and I can't wear them . I used to have some as a young person in my 20s.

I think that I have a string of (fake) pearls somewhere but I might land up wearing Mardi Gras beads and my six-inch work boots.  I probably won't be leaving the house this afternoon.  There's a bottle of champagne in the fridge.
