Payday deposit of $1541. Winter blahs have us spending entirely too much on take out, but I'm inclined to let it go thru Feb just because we are so bored.
DH got his first vaccine, so he's putting the paperwork in place to go back to work in two weeks. He's been on unpaid medical leave since his surgery 1/2020. He could have gone back in April as the world was heading home, but we felt it was better to keep him protected. Decision was pretty easy since we have ample savings, and I'm the breadwinner. He helped support us thru virtual schooling in the spring and has done more of the housework and cooking particularly when my work was blowing up. He was doing well thru Dec but Jan was a slow burn into depression so it's clear that he needs to go back. We're compromising with the two weeks after first shot providing some protection. I can't watch him spiral further. On his own, he would have gone back months ago and thought he would be free the day after the first shot.

Update: shanendoah [Q1]: $500 02/08/2021 (Goal: $4,000 03/31/2021) ROTH C [Q1]: $500 02/08/2021 (Goal $3,500 03/31/2021) Savings [Q1]: $0 02/08/2021 (Goal $500 03/31/2021)
Okay, I think I have this figured out. Figuring out how to do the budget on an every 2 week schedule after having been paid 2x/month for the last 6.5 years is a little harder than I was expecting. I got a raise and everything kept coming out with a tighter budget than we had before, until I remembered that there were 2 paychecks in the year I wasn't accounting for. My big goal is to fully fund C's 2021 ROTH by end of April. $2k from my vacation payout will be going toward that. The rest of that is covering big end of year expenses (holiday stuff mostly) that is hitting the cards. It was money that was saved for throughout the year, so this means that money will continue to sit in savings. Not putting much more in, but also not taking anything more out. Then April is the first 3 paycheck month, so I'll finish funding C's ROTH then.
Not going to worry too much about a ROTH IRA for me this year. In addition to my retirement savings (a 403(b) funded by me and defined contribution/pension funded by employer), my new job also lets me do deferred compensation. I'm putting 4% in a ROTH for that, too. I'm working on balancing my pre-tax and post-tax retirement savings, since the tax bills don't really bother me now, but might be a bigger hit at retirement/on a fixed income. I don't track the payroll deduction retirement savings here, but thought I'd mention it since I did track a ROTH IRA for me last year.

Deferred compensation Roth - that's a new combination for me. I'll need to go do some reading on that one - any suggestions?

I could have opted out of the deferred comp, or I could opt for pre-tax or post-tax contributions. I opted for the post-tax. T Rowe Price is administering the plan (the rest is through Voya), so that might be a place to look.

I just cut my savings in half so I could make extra payments on my mortgage and truck. Good news I still have $5,000 bad news I slid down the saving ladder again.

Update: shanendoah [Q1]: $500 02/08/2021 (Goal: $4,000/$10,000 03/31/2021) ROTH C [Q1]: $500 02/08/2021 (Goal $3,500 03/31/2021) Savings [Q1]: $0 02/08/2021 (Goal $500 03/31/2021) Tax Refund Savings [Q1 or Q2]: $0 02/09/2021 (Goal $6,000 03/31/2021)
Making an additional goal. I don't know if it will get saved this quarter or next, since I haven't actually filed taxes yet. But, I had forgotten about the $7500 tax credit we're getting for buying our electric car this last summer. That takes us from owing around $600 to getting a refund of around $6900. I'm allowing us some "fun money" from that, not that I have any idea what we'll do with that "fun money", but I'm going to give us that room, anyway.

Snapdragon Update 02-11-21 - $4479.73 / $5000
Car/House $ 4479.73 / $5000
New Totals $ 4479.73 / $5000
I forgot to update my numbers earlier. Still treading water and dealing.
I need to start to think about what I want for my future when probate and dad's, estate taxes are all done. I have a general idea of where I want to move to I just need to work on getting things sorted out.

Okay, I increased my 401k goal to match the fact that my salary at the new job ended up being a lot more than I expected. I also added 100 to my brokerage because when I contributed just now I did more than I should have. I'm pleased with the fidelity investment platform. I've been able to correct some things I wanted to change but Vanguard was forcing all this ridiculous paperwork and medallion signatures, but fidelity let me do it all online. I'm feeling very together now Name | Current | Goal | % Saved | Spent | ROTH 401k | $1138.61 | $9,500 | 12% | $0 | ROTH IRA | $1000 | $6,000 | 16%

| $0 | Brokerage | $500 | $2,500 | 20%
| $0 | House Expenses | $0 | $8,000 | 0%
| $0 | Total | $3,688.61 | $29,550 | 12.5%

Hi all, I am heading out for a l-o-o-o-n-g car trip from the land of palm trees and blue skies to the cold, snowy north, hitting snow on the very first day. Record lows along the way. You can feel sorry for me if you like; in fact, it's encouraged. Nobody wants this drive, alone, except for a dog. I posted this in another board thread on November 24, when my grandchild was one week old: My son and daughter-in-law had a micro preemie last week. It has been very stressful for everyone - the long slow weeks feeling that something wasn't right; the stress of every doctor's visit; the urgency of the last day before birth; the panic of the emergency C section; and delivery of a micro preemie, my first grandchild.
We have gone from breath by breath, to minute by minute, to test by test, to hour by hour, to chunks of time measured in mornings or evenings or overnights. We start all over again with every setback.
The neonatologists said it would be a roller coaster. They weren't wrong. It's only been a week but it feels like a lifetime. As the grandmother, sleep does not come readily or last long. It is so hard to feel good about a good day where nothing goes wrong, or a good test result, or fraction of an ounce gained, knowing the struggle has just begun. There will be lots of ups and downs, but we are taking it a tiny bit at a time for a tiny little baby who is supported by a large village of love.
Those of you here who are my Facebook friends have been getting periodic updates (and I thank you so much for your support). The short version is that the baby was transferred a few weeks ago to a higher-level acuity NICU in a larger city. This has uprooted the parents from the support network they had at home, with people bringing them meals and offering to walk the dog, shovel snow, run errands, etc. The transfer to the new NICU was thought to be a short-term thing for a relatively simple procedure, but after a full evaluation the specialists decided there were other issues that should be resolved first. The good news: maybe that procedure does not need to be done after all, and at the new hospital they can both be in the room with the baby all day long (staying at the Ronald McDonald House). The bad news: the parents will be away from their support network for a very long time. My friends and I have worked hard to find them a more comfortable living situation for the intermediate term. So, Mom to the rescue. Some of you have encouraged me to go to them right away to provide support, but it has finally reached a point where my support needs to be closer than from afar. So, my dog and I are headed out tomorrow morning. All this to say, the updates/smilies may not be very timely going forward, at least for a few months. I'll update when I have a few moments. PLEASE continue to update your own progress and continue to SAVE SAVE SAVE! forwardwego and I will do our usual to keep the thread going; it just may not be on a regular time schedule. Happy Valentines Day, everyone.

Happy Valentines Day, everyone. oh wow, serious, this is so difficult. Wishing you and family all the best and the best of it to little premie baby.

Shoutouts Part 1 of 2: teachermom Nice work laying out some starter goals, race #1 home projects and race #2 for gift and auto maintenance. Saving is so much easier when we are organized. I'll bet you are really enjoying doing financial coaching. Our nation can certainly benefit from increased education on finances. Yay for $500 saved so far. steph08 Congrats on adding over $2400 in savings in January. I especially admire your EF nearly $15K and 97% to goal snapdragon Good work with $4380 saved, & $200 extra on the kitchen reno principal. It's good to be up and running and then adjust as events unfold. seriousthistime Good job at over $12K and continuing to tune up your goals. Super that you are able to go be with and support your DS DDil and amazing little grandson sealy It is a challenge to find the fine balance between saving and killing off debt. Using half for debt reduction could be the nice middle ground. Saving4Norway Good job saving at a pace of over $2500 per month!

I'm so happy to know this has been a place of support for you, and thank you for making that mutual. paynointerest Nice job knowing exactly how to channel the leftover $$ from December. Best wishes on the promotion! June will be here any minute. nidena Good work with savings over $21K and getting the ROTH auto savings established!! nikiz628 Good start for you with $4766 on the board. bobosensei That's a lot of changes in 2020 and ahead for 2021. Good work fully funding your ROTH in spite of the 4 months unemployment. You set a great example of how setbacks are much more manageable and less stressful when savings is in place. speechchick71 shanendoah debthaven azucena It's good to see you on the board for 2021!

Plugginaway22: $4916 ($24,000) Feb update.
Jan- $3000 Feb- $1916
February is almost over, one month closer to Spring and garden season! We have had so much snow, ice and cold weather...I cannot wait. DH and I have traveled to Florida for the past several years during February and oh how I miss that!
We really have not spent much since the holidays, but I am now eyeing a new patio set at Home Depot.
I still have been unable to get my mother's vaccine scheduled, hopefully soon.

February was a good month. I maxed out my Roth IRA using extra money in my January budget and from money I had saved to buy a new couch. I bought the new couch and an ottoman from a furniture liquidation sale and did not use all the money I had saved -- so I put it toward my Roth. I increased my savings for my 403b and DH is staying consistent with his contributions.
How is everyone doing with getting vaccinated? Our state is still in Phase 1A. If I'm lucky, I'll be in the 1b category as an educator but I saw one site suggested that educators are limited to teachers in K-12, not for higher education. So now I'm wondering if I'll have to wait until the last phase. I really miss going out to eat and I'm not confident of the safety of doing that until I have the vaccine.
Stay safe and stay well!

Safe trip seriousthistime ! I am so glad you are going. Please let us know when you arrive. And please, no worries about the updates!!! And remember that you've saved a LOT over the years! Prayers for continued improvement for your beloved grandson, and safe travels to you, my, our friend. Oops! I did arrive safe and sound. I delayed the start of the trip by one day due to bad weather, and then stayed at one planned overnight for a second night to allow more bad weather to clear. The trip was long but uneventful. It started to snow an hour after I arrived at my final destination. Baby is improving, and although it has not yet translated into an earlier discharge than expected, we are grateful for every day of improvement on what is likely to be a very long road for the little guy. The procedure for which he was originally transferred now appears to be unnecessary as that issue has resolved on its own, with time and weight gain. The specialists are working on the two underlying issues now. The pup and I are trying hard to get used to cold weather again. I can't say I've missed it.

I'm learning to live and save within my reduced retirement income. So far so good. I have a lot of recent travel expenses that will be hitting the CCs sometime soon, and I hope to cash flow those expenses rather than take money from my travel savings. Needless to say, the travel I am saving for is not the sort of travel I've done lately.

Payday deposit of $1541. Azucena 2/5/2021 $1,541 out of $30,000Belated payday deposit of $431. DH went back to work last week and will get his first check 3/15 - Hooray. He's picked up fast food for breakfast and lunch every day back - BOO! So expensive, wasteful, and not healthy. He's finally past the starbucks every morning since we've been making our own coffee during covid and bought things he likes. Now, it's donuts, mcds, etc. Just plain old irritating esp since we carved out money for him to spend as he pleases so I wouldn't see it. Good news on the horizon in March as I got a 2% raise and a 15% bonus. My company actually adjusted our results upward to reflect how hard we worked in 2020 even though the financials weren't great due to all the covid life insurance claims. Ah-mazing! Azucena 2/26/2021 $1,954 out of $30,000 (7%)

Good evening WIRSavers. Apologies for the late shoutouts. I struggled with motivation. I'm proud of each and everyone of you for your participation so far in 2021.
