(Thank you oped for the idea for this thread) I will start with a couple that show how old I am. The World According to Garp I had read the book and then heard they were doing a movie. I had serious doubts but was impressed by the movie. It was a very long book and thought they did a great job hitting the high parts. Fletch and Fletch Lives I had read the book(s) and was very disappointed by the movies. Chevy Chase is a genius of physical comedy. I. M. Fletcher of the book was a verbal genius.

Water For Elephants and The Lovely Bones. Both good books but not so good movies.

Not every book should be a movie
I did not like the children's book "Wonder."
No way was I going to watch the movie

The Harry Potter series was great...even though I liked Snape much more than I should have

Cheaper by the Dozen with Steve Martin was the absolute worst ... they share a title... that is all. Hmmm... trying to think of good adaptations... I actually recommend people watch Life of Pi before they read it, the movie isn’t as good as the book, but it’s good enough, and if you read it and then get to the ending, you pretty much have to go back and read it again with that knowledge, so... Some that aren’t alike I can like both, as long as I don’t think of them as related, lol, like World War Z and the Bourne books. I’ll think on this more

The Shining - the movie was good as long as you realized they made some changes for filming. This is true for many movies, but its still hard for me if I read the book close to when the movie came out.
There are some Sci-Fi and fantasy books I'd love to see what they would do with them.

Hunt for Red October They combined a couple of the conflict scenes from the book but they did a great job with the adaptation to the movie. I think I've watch that movie 40 times.

Off hand And long ago! Read The Graduate before movie. Almost passed on the movie as book was not that good. Glad I was talked into going to movie. Loved The Godfather and I know it’s sinful to say out loud but did not like movie. so many over so many years but will stop with those. I got to the point where I tried not to read book before seeing movie

I love The Notebook movie. I also really enjoyed the book too; however, I didn't mind the changes made in the movie.
I've read Forever My Girl and watched the movie. Personally, I enjoy the book much more than the movie. One of the main reasons is the book has the lead in a band, not a solo singer as in the movie. With the book, it's the first in the series and I really enjoy the series.

Read it for a high school lit class. Love the "efficiency" aspect of the dad's job. Did you notice (it's been 40+ years since I read it) that one of the daughters was hardly mentioned at all. If I remember right, it was because she died early.

Yes Mary died early.
The next book, Belles on Their Toes, follows after dad died, when Lilian Gilbreth basically became one of the first female industrial engineers by doing what she was allowed to do and building the modern triangular kitchen, even though she didn’t cook... raised 11 kids and put them all through college, including the girls... one of my favorite historical figures.

There is a 1952 movie too but not quite as good as the first movie from the 50s.

The Godfather, the movie was good, but not as good as the book.
The Color Purple, the movie and the book were both good.
Amityville Horror, the book and the movie terrified me. Not sure why I tortured myself with either.
The Secret Life of Honey Bees, the book and the movie were good.
A Time to Kill, the book and the movie were good.
50 Shades of Gray, the book was extra terrible, the movie was just terrible.
I could go on and on. When I say the movie was good, I’m trying to judge it as if I hadn’t read the book. Otherwise, the book will almost always be better to me, just because there’s always so much detail in the book that gets left out of the movie. I always notice the missing pieces when I watch a movie and I’ve already read the book. That doesn’t automatically mean the movie is no good though imo.

we had this as a project in a HS English class. compare and contrast the same book and movie, with the requirement that the movie was adapted from the existing book and not the other way around. I remember choosing The Pelican Brief, which I had already read and loved. the movie? not so much. my mom and I watched with my dad, who hadn't read the book. he was so confused, the movie left out so many details that my mom and I had to fill him in. good ones? any of the Nicholas Sparks book adaptations. I watched The Longest Ride recently. I The Notebook and have to watch it when I see it in the tv guide, but I've never read that book.

Dune. The one with Kyle McLouchlan. (I don't know if I spelt that correctly.) Little Women. The book was better. The first adaptation was better than the more recent one.

I haven’t read book Little Women. I did like the 90s movie of Little Women. I have no desire to see the most recent one.

Oh I liked the new Little Women. Excited for new Dune.
The most recent Pride and Prejudice wasn’t good ... but if you only have 2 hours and need a fix...

Water for Elephants the book was excellent. Couldn’t bring myself to watch the movie.
His Dark Materials... the current miniseries? Because the Golden Compass movie wasn’t great I didn’t think...

I was incredibly confused at first when I started reading The Wedding. that one was solid, too.
