The former leader of the Proud Boys, Enrique Tarrio, is staring down decades in prison at a sentencing hearing on Wednesday after being convicted of seditious conspiracy in connection with the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

Prosecutors have requested 33 years in prison for Tarrio, the highest sentencing sought for anyone convicted in connection to the riot. Prosecutors said Tarrio influenced “countless subordinate members” of the Proud Boys and the general public in a conspiracy to forcefully stop a peaceful transfer of power following the 2020 election.

In federal court in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday ahead of sentencing, Tarrio joined four other members of the right-wing extremist group who were tried earlier this year. Each of the defendants were convicted in May of serious felonies, and all but one were convicted of sedition.

Tarrio had asked the court for less prison time than what the Justice Department recommended, but did not request a specific sentencing range, according to court filings. Instead, he argued against the use of a terrorism enhancement in deciding his sentence.

Wasn't worried about the judge. I only posted the article because an article I posted earlier today about this case said the guy was to be sentenced today.

So I only updated the postponement.

and I appreciated the update. I was looking at the use of 'emergency' in the link. Thought the tone of the article was kinda funny bringing up the point the Justice Department said, "emergency" and the court saying it wasn't really one. The article could have easily said simply something came up and the hearing would be rescheduled but the writer had to inject that little bit of mini-drama. Okay, slow rainy morning here at the old homestead.

Giuliani lost the case because he struggled to maintain access to his electronic records, partly because of the cost, and couldn’t adequately respond to subpoenas from attorneys for Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss as the case moved forward.

The mother and daughter are asking for unspecified damages after they say they suffered emotional and reputational harm, as well as having their safety put in danger, after Giuliani singled them out when he made false claims of ballot tampering in Georgia after the 2020 election.

A trial to determine the amount of damages for which Giuliani will be held liable will be set for later this year or early 2024, Judge Beryl Howell of the DC District Court said on Wednesday.

The damages could amount to thousands if not millions of dollars.

Giuliani has already been sanctioned almost $90,000 for Freeman and Moss’ attorneys’ fees in the case, and Howell says the former New York mayor may be saddled with additional similar sanctions.

We were discussing this this morning, and TD said he read an article that his lawyers not responding to information and subpoenas was deliberate.  The information that he would have had to provide in this case would have made things worse for him wrt to the Jan 6 criminal charges he faces.  

I haven’t gone looking for the info yet though.

He's brainwashed them and it is easy for it to stick because the diehards do not look to other sources of information besides Trump. The fact that all his 60 some lawsuits failed because of lack of evidence means his campaign should stop and he should be jailed for his election interference.

Trump is also repeating his 2020 MO of applying pressure to GOP members of the TN House and Senate to either impeach Fani Willis or defund her department.

One of the MAGA state GOPers is pushing the plan, although trying to impeach her is a violation of the three separate government powers requirement and both actions are highly unlikely to happen since they would require some Democratic participation to pass.

Still, Trump can’t help but make himself look worse by calling for it.

If he isn’t guilty, as he claims, why not ask for a speedy trial so he can prove he’s not guilty and move in?

As does no all cap words in the second one. I am thinking his lawyers wrote it for him to strengthen this line of defense:

I was listening to some talking heads this am discussing this. Yes they should have gotten the 33 years, but the lawyers for these cases made the argument that these guys felt they were in a patriotic militia and they had been charged by the president of the United States to defend the country by preventing a false president from taking office. From a military point of view they were following orders from a guy who is now flying around the country, campaigning for president, eating at deluxe banquets, so, at least, completely unpunished.

I can kind of see they felt like they were following orders from a guy who was unfortunately lying to them. So I’m ok with 17 years.

Why lock up people doing crimes like this in the first place? I can think of four reasons: 1) gets them off the street so they can't reoffend, 2) sends a message to others who might be thinking about doing similar, 3) punishment, 4) makes victims feel good.

So in this case:
1) 17 years is roughly 4 presidential election cycles. Do we really need to keep them on the sidelines for more?
2) How many people would think, "I couldn't do 33 years but 17? Piece of cake."
3) If 17 years doesn't convince a person they done wrong, will 33?
4) Sure there is the initial satisfaction when someone is hit hard, but is it really worth the long term expense?

With nearly two million people behind bars at any given time, the United States has the highest incarceration rate of any country in the world.

We spend about $182 billion every year — not to mention the significant social cost — to lock up nearly 1% of our adult population.

Yes they should have gotten the 33 years, but the lawyers for these cases made the argument that these guys felt they were in a patriotic militia and they had been charged by the president of the United States to defend the country by preventing a false president from taking office. From a military point of view they were following orders from a guy who is now flying around the country, campaigning for president, eating at deluxe banquets, so, at least, completely unpunished.

I can kind of see they felt like they were following orders from a guy who was unfortunately lying to them. So I’m ok with 17 years.

I’m really, really counting on the Liar in Chief finally experiencing some jail time, though. Look how many minion lives he ruined, and he hasn’t once said he regretted what happened to them.

I agree with the sentence that was handed down. No way could he have claimed he was just peacefully protesting. All of the people who crashed the capitol should be jailed. They should have been shot before they even got into the capitol.
