She needed to stay to be in a position to invoke the 25th Amendment. Protecting trump? Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President. She was one of "the principal officers of the executive departments" who could have helped remove President Trump.

Mitch McConnell's wife, transportation secretary Chao resigned She needed to stay to be in a position to invoke the 25th Amendment. I was thinking she quit so her name wouldn't be on it one way or another. Or, Trump will retaliate on her for Mitch's disloyalty.

If his whole cabinet quits, he will put Ivanka, Jared, Don Jr, Eric and Rudy on there and the 25th won't be possible.

I don't think Acting Cabinet position holders qualify to act (or not) on the 25th. I could be wrong, though.

I also think the resignations are a terrible idea.

Is that the claim?

Is that the claim? Yes. She and her husband still have a political career to think of. Which way will the party (the base) sway after this? If she plucks Trump from power, will she be sunk, will she be threatened by MAGAs, will she be a hero or villian? Same questions if she chooses to fight it? We really don't know how powerful the cult of Trump will be as time goes on. She wants to stay as neutral as possible.

according to a cut in graphic on Biden's speech (I'm running behind, had a work call so I lost audio and rewound it), Pelosi has officially called for the 25th to be invoked.

Yes they are protecting themselves. I wish someone had the guts though to protect the country first. Isn't that allegedly part of the reason for being in the federal government?

“As I’m sure is the case with many of you, it has deeply troubled me in a way that I simply cannot set aside,” Chao said. Neutral?

I am struggling with understanding the logic.

🤣🤣 When have politicians ever put the country first? 1974 Side note - I laughed really hard when Mitch said 'Let's look at recent history: 1974, 2000 and [whatever other year he said]'. My kids said "How long is recent history?" LOL. I guess when you are a 200 year old turtle, 1974 was just yesterday.

Is that the claim? Not sure where I was going with my question about her intentions. She's successfully navigated other instances when she was in a spot between trump and McConnell. So, I didn't think she'd step down to protect the political career of Mitch or herself. I'm just wondering why she'd suddenly have a problem with trump and the things he does and says. trump seems to have been pretty up front and predictable in his actions and what he wants to do. I don't think yesterday was that big of a surprise. Maybe it's a case of "it's all fun and games until the Capitol gets stormed by trump supporters and the Representatives and Senators get frightened"? I would imagine most of the Representatives and Senators have been getting death threats and what not from these trump supporters. Have we forgotten about the visit to the Michagan SoS home: www.npr.org/sections/biden-transition-updates/2020/12/07/943820889/michigan-secretary-of-state-says-armed-protesters-descended-on-her-home-saturday It's not like trump's supporters haven't been getting bolder. I guess I'm wonder what purpose her resignation serves?

Actions have consequences. It'll be interesting how this shakes out. Now a lot of the politicians that were condemning the police treatment of BLM actually have a police force that they're in control of that failed - albeit in a different direction. I also wonder if changes will be made for DC's national guard. The mayor asked for them prior to and was turned down and since she's not a governor she can only ask for their presence.

I heard the speech, and it was much more affirming on the possibility of impeachment than your excerpt.

This NEEDS to change. Virginia & Maryland sent their guards to help, but that took time to prepare and to move. The DC guard could have been on alert early and ready to go when called.

It sounds like a news reporter was interviewing her. Maybe (s)he turned over the tape to the police. There are news articles about her if you Google 'Elizabeth Knoxville mace'. She sounds like a lost cause. Completely brainwashed.

Most of the people I read being interviewed admitted they had no idea what to do once they got into the Capitol building. She sounds like she didn't have much of an idea or plan before she got there.
