I finally made it over today to pick up my mail and grab my newspaper. I was really glad to find they published what I submitted as an article, with my name on it, because now I can use it as a "clip" when pitching paid work. I've written about $100K worth of content over the past 10 years, but 99.99% of it was inexpensive, ghostwritten blog content/ebooks I "sold" and can't claim as my own work. I decided when I moved I didn't want to write cheap content anymore for SEO companies. To make the change, I need work published under my own name. I have 3 books on Amazon, but they are hard to use as examples because they aren't typically what I am pitching someone to write. I wrote this article because I found the story interesting and not available online anywhere, but I also wrote it in hopes I would be able to use it later as an example of my writing. I was happy to see they didn't edit a single word of it. As a writer, that's pretty satisfying.

Congratulations! It must be very satisfying to see your work both published AND unedited.

I once submitted a letter to the editor for a technical magazine. I was thrilled they published it, until I read it and nothing I wrote was unedited. It could have been written by anyone and simply had my name attached.
So, it was fun to see they didn't edit my work on this one.

Thank you everyone. I wasn't sure I wanted to submit this and it took me a couple days to get up the courage. Small town and all...
In the end, I'm glad I did. It was fun to write again. On to some other project.

Good for you! Nice no edits Wondering if California law about contract work will stand? Your writing is example, also all the Uber snd Lyft drivers. Seems misguided as many people like to have control over their work and lives. Not fitting into the Union controlled jobs. But the Uniond contribute large amounts of $$$$ so politicians do what unions want Hoping no other states or federal laws about contract workers/unions
Good for you moving to another state so you can write and be paid !!!

The CA law requiring reclassification of ICs was going on while I was getting my house ready to sell. It was part of the reason I chose not to buy anywhere in CA. I also think Prop 13 may be on its way out in CA and that could greatly increase property taxes. It's weird, the company I made most of my income from was based in Utah. They never so much as commented on the CA law and still to this day haven't. Many of the big names in work at home jobs (Amazon, Apple, etc...) will only hire people in certain states due to labor laws. It makes it really hard to freelance in some places.

We will find out in November as Prop 22 aims to reverse that law. I have seen several adds and also protest against the law. However, at least the protesters (these were ride share workers for Uber and Lyft) who were interviewed seemed somewhat confused to me. On the one hand they wanted to be independent contract workers. On the other hand they claimed that legislators had screwed this up as they wanted their freedom kept in place but they wanted things like paid timevoff, sick leave, and vacation. In other words they wanted what they got without paying the price (loss of freedom) November will answer the question what they will get at least for now.

In other words they wanted what they got without paying the price (loss of freedom) November will answer the question what they will get at least for now. Most independent contractor jobs fail to exist when mandated to convert to "employee" jobs. The companies either don't do the work or they send it to places where ICs are not an issue. They have IC work in the first place because they don't want to "hire" someone to do it. Uber and Lyft have publicly said if the law stands they just won't offer services in CA. Many of the other companies who hire ICs just won't hire workers in CA - and many already didn't anyway. The law completely screws over ICs and offers very little, if anything, in return. When it comes to writing, SEO, editing, programming, etc... those companies will just block CA workers. If it becomes a national law, they will simply offshore.

I don't really know if I want to write anymore for a living, but yes, it would be nice to get paid to write things I enjoy. Oddly enough, I used to want to write science and math textbooks. I hated the boring ones in school and always thought there had to be a better way to do it. I've done a lot of instruction manual type projects and like that as well. The problem is, like most IC work, it's been a race to the bottom for pay. I can see that getting worse now that more people will be looking for side gigs and to make money from home. I really don't plan to work for another year or two. My plan was to explore, rockhound, and paint/make jewelry inventory then figure out income generation.

Please add history to this list ......... I would sleep through these classes and I graduated HS in 1959.
Tell me what happened in an interesting way and don't make me memorize dates.
Boring

He literally created a history monster in me To this day one of my favorite subjects and the internet just added to my “obsession” Wish I had had as good science teachers
