From an article on MSN:
"The mosquito population is exploding in southwest Louisiana in aftermath of Hurricane Laura. Livestock owners have reported numerous cattle, horse, and deer deaths from mosquito attacks, according to a Louisiana State University AgCenter press release. The swarms of mosquitoes have sucked the blood out of the animals until "they can't get enough oxygen" and ultimately succumb to death, the LSU AgCenter said." Reported this past week:
Hundreds of Butterflies Killed in 'Monarch Massacre' After Mosquito Spraying in North Dakota Fargo residents woke up on Thursday to find hundreds of dead butterflies around the town. ---------------- My city has been relatively free of mosquitoes. We saw spray planes in June but haven't noticed since. The gnats are worse.

They have gotten bad in the last few weeks. A nearby town on the water does spray. On a good Monarch butterfly note, I've seen some and found caterpillars on my butterfly weed for the first time. BTW I am a mosquito magnet.

We start spraying next week due to Nile virus fears.

I hate to say this, but this is good news for me. My company makes money when insects are bad, and my bonus is higher when my company makes money.

Are you in Ga.? We are in the "gnat belt" here...it's about 50 mi. wide & runs at an angle from south to north thru several SE states. They get horrible here. It's pretty bad when there are enough mosquitos to suck the blood from big animals & kill them...cattle, horses & deer.

We had a banner year and have already released some high quarterly earnings and projections. We are trading pretty high. Once winter hits, there is no guarantee any bugs will return, so next summer could be very bad for us.

I am also a mosquito magnet. We had a huge problem here a few years ago, but it's mostly subsided.

They are attracted to the carbon dioxide we exhale too.

I have heard about the Type O blood being a mosquito attractor though, and I do have Type O.

I'm still horrified that mosquitoes can kill animals. That is going to become my new nightmare. I blame you if the next time I'm outside drunk and get bit I start freaking out about how they're trying to kill me.

They probably have gnats large enough to carry a cat away. eta: A MN man had a mosquito spray thing that could be put into sprinkler systems. I haven't seen any ads in a couple of years.

A "Just for your information" tidbit...if you are driving in the SE & think folks are friendly/waving at you...nope, they are trying to swat the gnats out of their ears, their eyes & their mouths. And we have some teeny, tiny skeeters that feel like a fire ant when they bite you...they are BAD & hard to see they are so small.

We have what we actually call “no sees” you only feel them when they bite But mosquitoes are easy to see when they start dive bombing away.

I'm next door to Artemis Windsong in MN. Yep, those mosquitoes are big here. Jokingly is our state bird. About a decade ago, 3 seminary classmates from the south (OK, Bama, Ark.) were going to come up to go to the Boundary Waters (NE MN , large area of lakes / woods where no motorized vehicles allowed, only canoes / kayaks ) The only times that worked were mid-May or early August. The wanted to go mid-May to avoid the mosquitoes. I answered, "Sure, but you do realize that the ice has maybe come off the lakes about a week before that" We went early August. Lost a little blood but it was worth it.

I'm none of the things that supposedly attract mosquitoes but they love me. Same. Type A blood here. The entire family can sit around the firepit, and I am the only one getting bitten - through pants and long sleeve shirt.
