You don't have to do anything. If you want to avoid future disappointment several posters gave helpful hints on what to look for. Not everything on the platform is sold by Amazon.

Amazon has a program called "Fulfilled by Amazon" that's often referred to as FBA. Thanks for these details- at least now I'll know when third parties are involved.

Another thing to watch for is whether or not you are ordering from the Used Warehouse unless you want used or refurbished products! Just a thought..

Amazon's catalog is so big because of the 3rd party sellers. My first choice is always Shipped & Sold by Amazon. 2nd choice is Shipped by Amazon, Sold by ABC. 3rd choice is Shipped & Sold by ABC. The first 2 follow Amazon's return policy and uses their customer service, the last one you're dealing directly with the seller.
Even so, Amazon always wants to make you happy. If the seller is being unreasonable, then just tell them that you're going to file an A-Z claim. They want to avoid that at all costs because it's a ding on their metrics with Amazon and they'll be out the money anyways.

I’ve bought a lot of things off Amazon. There are things I refuse to buy online and prefer to buy from a retailer that has a brick and mortar near me. Those would be things like tech and electronics and most other items I consider to be expensive.
A few years ago I bought some mango butter from a small business on Amazon. When I received it, the top was off and the paper or whatever that seals the product under the top, had come off. Meaning, the product was not sealed at all, which means it could’ve been tampered with.
I contacted the seller just because they were a small business, to let them know the condition of the product when I received it. I wasn’t looking for a refund even though I had no intentions of using it, I was just trying to help a small business by alerting them to a problem. They gave me a refund anyway, and told me to not bother with sending it back to them.
I’d be really aggravated if I experienced something like in the OP. Mostly because the item is clearly a return. That would be a big deal to me before I even got to the missing pieces. When I shop in person, I skip over items in packaging that’s not intact, because if I’m buying new, I expect it to be new, and not a return.

I have prime. I search for what I want then filter by prime. Then I filter by top rated. Once I find what I want I make sure that it allows for free returns. I don't really care who sells it as long as I can return it.
If it doesn't work out, I start the return in the app and take the item and the barcode to Kohl's and the credit is on my Amazon account right away. Or, I can instead have my debit/credit card refunded which takes a couple of days.
If you go on there and do no filtering you're basically just taking your chances with what you get.

We haven't had any problems with Amazon (knock on wood!) but have quit doing Walmart.com because of a bad shipment and refusal to refund my $$. You have to watch for third-party sellers on Walmart too.

I think that the only time I have ever had issues with an Amazon order was the wine rack I ordered from a third party. I had to deal with the third party rather than Amazon. Luckily, they were pretty responsive and resent the wine rack I had ordered. I'm not sure exactly where the damage occurred, but the second wine rack was almost as damaged as the first. However, between the 2 there were enough pieces we could put together to make a full wine rack.
However, after this event I stopped buying things through a third party everywhere, not just Amazon.

I only keep my prime membership for some of their original content television. I find that amazon is no longer the timesaver it once was because you have to filter through so many results to try to figure out which ones are not faked products. I've learned that many companies will pay for a 5 star review with free products. My boyfriend has had many sellers refund the cost of a product he ordered for removing a bad review, or they will offer to send him another for free if he posts a 5 star review. He said it is only the companies out of china that ever do this. So I feel like you can only trust the negative reviews now. But still it is sometimes the only place you can find certain items.

BG, you have every right to be annoyed by this and to expect to receive what you paid for. Please don't feel attacked--I think everyone here is trying to help you navigate these issues in the future. Like mentioned, even walmart and target (and sears) have these 3rd party vendors linked to their websites, so it's good to know exactly what to look for/avoid. I agree, I got caught buying water filters on a Sears website several years ago. At the time, I thought if I was on Sears website, it was sold by Sears. I thought the water filters were counterfeit, but Sears would not help me. I try to filter so sold/shipped by the seller only ie. whom ever owns the website I am on, Walmart, Amazon etc. I actually only worry about Prime shipping. I guess I have used 3rd party sellers as long as it has prime shipping. I have not had any issues returning "Prime" items - and I use the radio button at the top of the screen to filter to just Prime sellers. I would not file a credit card dispute until I tried with the seller, but it is up to BG how to handle it.

OK Bean, you guilted me into calling the company.....Nice young man answered the phone, was OK but when I gave him the Invoicenumber from the 1st owner his first response was "that should have never been in the box"....Ya think ?? Anyway, he gave me his name and phone X number, said I should have a refund from Amazon in a couple of days, and I don't need to return the blood pressure machine..... I called the CC to release the dispute, she suggested I leave it open until I see the money hit my account. I thank all all of you who have given me help and suggestions from buying through Amazon and things to watch out for. Lesson Learned!!! BG

I am a prime member, and nonsense like this is one of the reason I tend to stick with products that have free, no question returns. When you buy online, you can’t open the box or try anything on, So your chances of getting something bad are much higher. Any Online retailer who can’t deal with this he’s not going to get my business.

Just got a phone call from amazon (computer voice) . “Your Amazon account has a $299 charge on your Visa, call xxxxxxx if this is accurate “ Total scam, my Amazon account uses another phone (cell, call was on a land line. Husband wants to keep land line.) also I don’t have s Visa cc. We get a lot of junk calls on both land and cell lines Probably if I had called the phone # would have been asked SS# Amazon info etc May Curses rain down on scammers

I bought a really good, quiet blood pressure monitor from CVS about a month ago. It's and Omron 7 series, Ultra Silent. Was about $50. I like it much better then my old one. And I got a $15 rebate that I spent at CVS.
