Last Monday, my 57-year-old sister died in the hospital from complications due to Covid. She's been hospitalized for 15 days, but had not been on a ventilator. Covid-19 caused her to have AFIB, and for her immune system to kick into overdrive, causing a cytokine storm. I'd spoken with her on the phone Saturday night and she was feeling very tired, but expected to be released home on Monday (on blood thinners and oxygen.) She coded and they could not revive her. Her official cause of death is heart failure secondary to Covid-19.
Last Friday, my sister's husband (my brother-in-law) died in the same hospital from Covid-19. He's been intubated on a ventilator for approximately 2.5 weeks and his prognosis had been poor the entire time.
They left behind 11 cats. Some good friends of ours drove from California to Las Vegas (where they lived), chased and captured all 11 cats (getting bitten in the process), then drove them all back to safety in California to the cat rescue I'm with: The Cat House on the Kings. 9 of the cats are in quarantine in one room together at the Cat House on the Kings (it's a 12-acre cat rescue and sanctuary along the Kings River), and her two youngest cats (age 4, brothers) are now hunkering down in my office: they are flame point ragdolls named Miso and Mochi.
My sister had no children. Her husband has 4 adult children from prior marriages... all of whom live in various other states.
My request for everyone is simple: please take appropriate safety precautions to protect yourself from this scary virus. And, if hospitalized, speak with your doctor about all of the treatment options since this is very much a vascular disease as well as a respiratory one.
Meanwhile in central California, where we live, the #CreekFire has filled our skies with smoke and it's in our County (Fresno) and in neighboring Madera County. It's over 143,000 acres burned in just 5 days with 0% containment. My National Guard / military pilot husband has been activated and flew fire support last night and will be doing the same tonight and for the foreseeable future. I'm trying to make friends with Miso (who likes me) and Mochi (who looks at me like I'm an axe-murderer) while dealing with the grief that comes from losing one of my only relatives. (I lost both of my parents in my 30s, never met my grandparents, and have no other family, really.)

Molly I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your sister and her husband. Good job on the rescue of the cats. Your post makes me wonder how many pets are out there who have no idea why their humans never came home.

I hate when a disease/event takes out a family. It is hard enough to lose someone, but to lose multiple people at once just blows crazy bad.
I'm so sorry for what you are going through.

Your story hit me hard. I asked my sister that if something happened to TD and me, if she’d take care of our problem children. At least Sheldon and Harriet have another guardian now.

I also extend my condolences and prayers. This disease is wicked and will strike sometimes where least expected. Our county recently had a Covid death of a 9 month old. No one is safe so we all need to do the best we can to protect each other.

I'm sorry for your losses. It's not fair to lose two relatives so close together.
I'm glad someone was able to get the kitties safely to you.

My condolences ❤ mollymouser ❤ on the losses of your sister and brother-in-law. You have a big heart when it comes to taking in two of the cats. Be careful. Wash your hands. Cover your cough. Stay home. Stay safe. Wear a mask. Most of all, please take care of yourself.
