Mississippi has narrowed the design selection down to two. I hope the magnolia is selected. The shield is so bland.

I agree. The magnolia is much better.

As Mississippi is known as the magnolia state, go with your state flower.

The top one looks more like a lame logo you send to the printer for some work you are getting done. It doesn't look like a flag. It looks like a gif that lacked cropping.

I like the Magnolia one better as well. I'm glad it made it this far in the selection! I'm all for simple direct flags -- while the shield one is simple and direct - it's blah and looks a little "low budget". The magnolia one is a little more "complicated" but it's easy to identify all the symbols on it from a distance. I think it would look good on a flag pole or on a sticker (like a car parking tag/sticker) or as a background on the State's webpage. I can see it in a grade school classroom or adorning a stage next to the American Flag. It could be incorporated into Football (and other sports uniforms) too... So, Yeah, I like it. I suspect the Shield one will win... the "In God We Trust" is more prominent. (Which is ok, but I'll always envision Cthulhu's tentacles coming up around the flag - cause if I have to pick a god (cause I always wonder which god are we trusting in?) - it's Cthulhu)

My husband joined some group for Vexillologist. He has a list of the rules for making a good flag. The only thing wrong with the magnolia flags is the "In God We Trust" (no text).
The top one - I don't believe the symbolism is meaningful and attractive. Of course, I have no idea what is meaningful to people.

Was it cynical of me to think of counting the number of stars on there and comparing it to the number of slave states there were, just to make sure it wasn't the same number?
There are thirteen stripes on the "shield" flag. I very much doubt it was in reference to the thirteen colonies, since Mississippi was not one of them. It could be random, or just the thought that it looks good with thirteen. Or that there were ultimately thirteen states in the Confederacy, so is an acknowledgement of that. Don't know, but they should go with the magnolia anyway.

It's not thirteen stripes. Thanks.

Thanks for Cheesy for the designer flag notes if you will. The explanation of the shield design actually makes me like it less. I think good design should evoke what you are trying to portray. I did not think rivers when I saw the top of the design. And a shield is so medieval. If anything it evokes Britain not America. The In God We Trust has that hey we are America and believe we are a Christian nation feel to it, but heck shouldn't a state flag say something about your state without needing a translator?
I find the fact that the committee added the star interesting. Part of me wants to take off the In God We Trust text and throw up different slogans. Proud member of Trumplandia Put a star in your pocket

That shield profile is weird. Every time I look at it I see a blue buttocks at the top.

The stars in the Tennessee state flag represent east Tennessee, middle Tennessee and west Tennessee. The circle around the stars represents unity.

This thread has made me appreciate the NJ state flag. I haven't read about the flag, but I like I can see an image denoting prosperity and the plowshares don't need immediate translation like 18 red stripes or similar.

Hey! Is that why New Jersey license plates are yellow?? To go with the State flag? I like yellow - and always like the NJ plates. (I also like the New Mexico centennial plates - turquoise with a southwestern pattern dollop in the middle. ) Illinois has a lame flag: It might be time for an update... really, putting the state name on the flag... lame...

Tiny, I have no idea. I have a cause license plate. It helps me find my car and helps too. I don't know if the current ones are like this, but the breast cancer one used to be violets with a yellow background. Pretty.
Never thought much about state flags, but I'd prefer a lame one to a WTE one.

I just looked up NJ license plates - the one's with a Yellow background are the 'standard issue" plate. A couple of years ago I watched for and documented all the license plates I saw while about my daily business... and did document seeing all 50 states, some Canadian and some from Mexico and other South American countries. I even spotted a Washington DC plate. The quest started when while driving home from work, I spotted a Rainbow on a license plate and was awed that it was from Hawaii. That's what's fueling my interest in plates... OK, I went down the rabbit hole: why is the NJ state flag Yellow (ok, it's really buff - but I think it's a very pretty yellow!) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms_and_flag_of_New_Jersey#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20minutes%20of,Jersey%20Continental%20Line%20be%20dark%20(
