We have a front door with 2 sidelites we're looking to replace. OMG, they are so much more expensive than the last time we window shopped for them!
Where should we look? What should we look for? Help--cause my husband wants to fill in the sidelites to save money. That is not happening. He just went to a local building place. $5500! Wtf!? This is a simple mission style door we're talking about.

Brand new front door, storm door, new door frames and window above installed is going to run us $8500. The first quote was north of $9000.
We thought the first quote was highway robbery so we called up DH's old boss. He's never the cheapest but his work is meticulous. When he came back at $8500, we decided maybe the first place didn't have as much overhead and profit as we thought.
There's potentially water damage so I feel better having it done by the known entity. And since it's taken forever to get everything in, we are also getting new stairs from the entry to main first floor and replacing the entry way floor and remodeling the half bath that's down in the entry way.
I can't have tile as planned since the stupid house was built with 24 inches between supports. So I need to get the luxury vinyl stuff picked out so it's ready to go. I was meh on everything Lowe's and Home Depot had locally.
When we gut the kitchen, the floor is getting reinforced to allow for tile.

Installed? Sounds right. That's what DH would charge. I'm assuming you want a nice door so there's that cost included. Front doors see a lot of wear so it's pricey to do it right.

All I know is that we just replaced the side garage door when the house was resided this past spring. That very basic door added $800 to the nearly $50k tab for the rest of the work done. It would have otherwise cost us $2500. I think we only paid for the door itself.

Check Facebook marketplace or Craigslist, you can often find them for much cheaper. If you’re wiling to do the work yourself, if you’re having it installed, market price is it.
I used to build those in a factory during college. I will never buy new. What’s wrong with the one you have, most parts can be fixed/replaced.

The sidelites are single pane glass that frost in the winter, and there is a crack in the wood panel below one of the side lites where you can see daylight.

If you like the door, just replace the sidelights. Your handyman should be able to do it, it’s not really hard. Maybe a 4 on a scale of 1-10.

I didn't know you could do that, but I don't like the door, either. Does anyone have any knowledge/opinions about mahogany doors? This door is located under a deep porch, if that matters.

I finally heard from my old neighbor via text what, 4 or 5 days ago. He said they’d been very busy trying to get settled in, and he’d call me next week (this week now) to arrange transport for his Jeep.
Would it be rude to ask him if he’s considered selling it? I might be interested in buying it, depending on price.... and I have no idea of what’s a fair price for his. All I know is it’s not brand new, but don’t know what year it is, and it appears to be one where you can take the top and doors off according to BF. I don’t even know how it rides, BF finally moved it to the end of the driveway when he was cutting the grass, and that’s been the only time we’ve touched it besides when BF got the note off the dashboard.
Old neighbor has said he can’t drive anymore (which is why he left it here in the first place), and I don’t get the impression from conversations with him that his health is expected to improve. He has bone cancer.... I don’t know what that means as far as treatment and possible remission.
I don’t want to offend him by asking though. Even though it seems to me that he’s not all that concerned about it, given the lack of communication and I guess, the fact that he even left it in our care, period. We ARE trustworthy and would never do anything to it, or even drive it, but I don’t think I’d trust someone that much that I barely know, no matter how friendly they are and how nice they seem. But that could be a flaw in me, that I don’t trust people, more than a flaw in him that he’s willing to.
Anyway, what say ye, o wise ones of YM? Would it be rude of me to ask if he’s considered selling it and saying we might be interested in buying it if he’s willing to sell it?

I think you posted in the wrong thread--which is totally fine with me, but you're not going to get many answers here! I don't think it's rude at all to ask. If they're dealing with bone cancer, it's probably hard to worry about loose threads, like a vehicle you can't drive anyway. Jeeps are really popular lately, so I don't know if you can get a good purchase price, though if they just don't want to worry about it... maybe?

I know it depends a lot on the house itself and the lifestyle, but we rarely use our front door. My neighbors don’t seem to use theirs either, judging by the spider webs and crap that’s all over their front doors, looking like Halloween. We mostly only open the front door to retrieve packages off the front porch. When we’ve had guests come over for a dinner or whatever, we usually leave the garage door up and they come in that way. There’s a doorbell at the door to the house inside the garage. Doesn’t really make sense to me, having a doorbell inside the garage, but it’s there. My Mom and his Mom, who both have mobility issues and use either a walker or a cane, are the only ones that might use the front door, to avoid the 4 steps in the garage. The walkway to the front door from the driveway seems soooo looong, which is part of the reason we rarely use it, even for guests. I painted the front door a few months ago. It was an ugly pale green, and I painted it blue. “REALLY blue” according to BF, but whatever, I like it. I am appalled at the prices posters are talking about for replacing a front door. Goooood grief!

I guess my dh was also quoted about $2300 for one of these. However, he went shopping after finding a mahogany door online for $2200. Of course, there's a catch. That's for an unfinished door--factory finish is another $1300. (I think we could finish it ourselves.) There's some other less pricy extras we'd probably need to get, too. My DH said he saw more thermatrus at Menards, I think, so maybe we'll check those out.

We use a local custom shor and window shop. They only make the doors out of wood asend they have a seconds section. And some of those are beautiful! Could something similar be near you?

Looks like there's one, but it's just a distributor. Another looks to be expensive. I'll have to do some more digging.

I am soooo thankful hubs can do all this. But that is one of the reasons0 why we are stopping remodeling, just cannot afford it. It's a shame as he enjoys it.
