According to this article, I should already be dead. I don't use margarine or eat steaks--actually hardly any red meat--but otherwise, it's too late. I'm doomed. link

Nope, I’m not going to look. I’m just going to keep on Don't look so you won't see the bacon, brownies, ice cream... Euell Gibbons was only 64 when he died, and he probably never ate any of the good stuff, apparently just pine nuts, wild greens, honey and seeds for all the good that did him!

Meh. If you aren't overweight/obese and you are eating those things you'll probably be just fine.

Yeah I looked at that days ago. They hedged with 'may cause' and really didn't address amounts per day or week that were bad or OK. Its basically a reminder that too much salt, sugar or saturated fat is bad for your heart. I would have found it more useful if they led with daily limits. For example I do use some canned soups and frozen meals. I check the labels for salt and sugar content and try to be mindful of it. In frozen meals alone there are huge differences in salt and sugar contents. I've seen sugar as high as 21g for a meal and sodium in the 1800 level. I skip anything in that range. On the more reasonable side there are meals with 9gms or sugar or less and meals with a third of that salt.
I think be mindful and know how your own diet balances out. People who eat bananas generally can have more sodium than I do because of their intake of potassium.

I honestly believe in all things in moderation. And my "moderation" has shifted as I've aged, my metabolism slowed, and my digestive tract became less tolerant of indiscretions. I still eat everything-just less of it and less frequently. I often say to myself, "the 10th bite won't taste any better than the 1st bite" which is my way of embracing 1 piece of bacon vs. more.

Nah. You won't live longer. It'll just seem like it. I'm a fan of moderation. One Oreo won't likely end it all. And yes, I CAN stop at one.

I'm going to die happy...just finished my bowl of ice cream with Hershey's chocolate all over it & English walnuts on it too. Oh golly, it was good. We had BLTs a few days ago & will have more soon too since maters are plentiful right now. And we usually have a few chips with those BLTs too! My oreos….usually just 2 or 3 unless my sweet tooth is out of whack...then it may be 4. And double stuff are better too.

I had Mayfields Extreme Moose Tracks ice cream with chocolate syrup for lunch today. Had sushi for dinner!

kadee79 No problem! The walnuts neutralized the other stuff. And the double stuff, too.

I don't like oreo's to much creme inside. Not many cookies I like. Vanilla wafers is one and I like the ones I make. Oatmeal, sugar, chocolate chip, and peanut butter, I'm not crazy about the peanut butter ones.
We have home made cakes, most from a box mix, would be better if I made all of them. I do love ice cream but won't buy it often. I bought a cherry pie today but generally make them.
We have greatly reduced the amount of food we eat, that has helped.

I know- what a bunch of killjoys. I used to think that sugar was OK as long as I watched my a1c and the calorie content and took care of my teeth. Nope.
Most of the stiff on that list doesn't surprise me and it's pretty much all on my "do not eat" list except for occasionally indulging in anything with frosting. I'm also pretty lax about salt because my BO is just fine.

Ninety percent of that list is better summed up as: don't eat restaurant or processed grocery store foods. That eliminates all the sky high sugar/salt/bad fat content.
I'm not convinced that all fat is bad, or even that "they" (whoever they are) have the right idea on which fats are better/worse. Kinda like the slide about skipping the low fat foods, because they ruined them by loading them up with sugar instead.
I actively avoid what I call fake foods - low fat, low/no sugar, any sugar replacements, gluten free... Uhn-uhn, give me the full fat mozzarella over the plasticy low fat version, or the all-butter cake instead of some dry chemical tasting "healthier" version. Of course, we're making those ourselves, so we don't overload them with salt/fat like commercial stuff. I've also found that the real stuff (like fat & sugar) fulfills satiety, so a normal sized portion is enough, vs the so-so low fat/sugar versions.

You can take my cheese from my cold dead hands. Notice wine isn't on the list? I'm sure it will neutralize the cheese.

I wanted to question it but I figured maybe it was just another set of initials I was not current on. Took me forever to think of DS as dear son instead of dip shit

Oops. I think you know I meant BP. (But my BO is just fine, too!) I didn't get through all 50. Are Tater Tots on the list? If I may, I'd like to go back to my "Eew" comment about them, which was characterized as judgmental. Yes it is, but to quote a phrase we've heard heard too often recently, "we're all in this together". Health insurance is pretty much priced on a cost-plus basis (look up minimum loss ratios). More claims, the coverage becomes more expensive. How much could we save if we prevented some of the conditions caused by unhealthy choices? As others have noted, it's not the occasional indulgence. I'm with family in SC now and enjoying all kinds of stuff on my "do not eat" list. Smoked pork. Doughnuts. Pretzels. Wine. I'll go back to brussels sprouts, quinoa and collard greens when I get home. The irony, to me, is that while I'm paying IRMAA surcharges on my Medicare premiums because Medicare is losing money. they won't pay for me to get my lipids panel and a1c checked quarterly so I can keep them within normal ranges via diet and supplements. But if I get Type 2 diabetes they'll pay for my insulin and test strips and if I end up needing stents or a bypass- well. they'll pay for that.
