Yeah, I have a female senior citizen neighbor who shoots the squirrels with a pellet gun. Especially after the 5 or 6th gin and tonic. Claims it doesn't hurt them and it probably doesn't because she's blind as a bat even when sober. Our home lots are only 65 feet wide which puts her within 20 feet of her neighbor's house. Other neighbors have been known to shoot the white-wing doves with shotguns. Yes, right here in town. While the dove are sitting on the power lines. Shocked the *&%@! out of me to watch an episode of Northwoods Law and learn there are states that have a squirrel season. We New Englanders are civilized and kill our wildlife only during prescribed times. 😜We do?

I have to say in all seriousness, gator, rattlesnake, frog legs, rabbit and sushi are all excellent when prepared correctly

Happy: red necks are probably the most unlikely racists in the world. Most of us have served with and bleed with all races. Nor do we live only in the deep south. It is a way of life and a firm belief in what's right. Will trust (and have trusted life in fellow red necks) can not trust a Yankee worth a dam

Squirrels are OK, just another dark meat, good in a stew. Not as fatty as raccoon, but have a decent flavor. Herd to describe, they’re used to be more hunters around here, and we most definitely have a season. There’s even trained squirrel dogs to help you find them. It’s easier to harvest deer and an effort per pound basis, so we don’t eat many squirrels. I bet if you ask my DIL she will figure about $200.00 per pound if you factor in all the “necessary” expense. Hunting camp fee, ammo, travel to and from etc He does give most of deer meat to his workers and anyone who eats venison

Side note the racist remark bothered me, the two most peoples ever met were in boston. Me and girl friend were walking down street holding hands I was confronted with and I re member him saying " breeders". Said with contempt. Second the guy was really bashing several races me and friends thought dude was crazy. ( turns out we were right). Find more racism up north than down here. Straight up your thinking of I will think your racists

Add enough spices and even cardboard would taste good. High in fiber and low calorie.

However, we are blessed to harvest as many as we can carry right outside our front door so the expenses are minimal. My wife gets tired of hearing “plug your ears I’m going to shoot” as I slowly open the bedroom window...

Were you on an episode of either North Woods or Lonestar Law? Shooter have a valid hunting license? Is it squirrel hunting season? No, just every day life. There is no squirrel season, and it was just a pellet gun. No license needed. And I'm kind of embarassed that I know this. Embarrassed? I thought that was common knowledge?

I don't think the term redneck is limited to the South.
My dad ate squirrel when he was kid. He raised us to believe it was poor people's food, and he didn't want us to have to ever eat it.
No such thing as squirrel season.

Southern Suzanna, actually, the term redneck wasn't from the deep south -- it is a term of respect -- birthplace from West Virginia:
"Here in southern West Virginia, the term “redneck” means something more than a rural, working-class white person. It’s symbolic of the solidarity and defiance demonstrated by the thousands of coal miners and their families who fought in the West Virginia Mine Wars.
This dramatic and often overlooked chapter in American history took place when miners stood up and fought coal operators for their constitutional rights, fair labor practices, and the right to join a union. The roughly 10,000 justice-seeking miners who took up arms and marched to battle in 1921 at the climax of the mine wars wore red bandannas around their necks and came to be known as “the Red Neck Army.” So when you call someone a redneck in West Virginia, you may be giving them a compliment."
Swamp -- are you from upstate NY? I am -- that conversation sounds very familiar! I miss it! Maybe not the squirrel-shooting part, but the people there are genuine.

Ok, I shouldn't have said "deep" South. But I just looked it up. While earlier usage involves Scotland, it generally refers to Southerners. WV is Southern. I laughed because someone else said it wasn't confined to the "deep" South and then mentioned Yankees. South is really South, deep or otherwise.

Somewhere during all my moves I got rid of tbat book. Now I am thinking that might not have been a good idea. Just kidding

I live among the rednecks. Being from the PA mountains I could be considered a hill person myself.
My favorite redneck moment- driving past our local golf course and seeing four very large men with beards and ball caps pile out of a tiny golf cart onto one of the greens. All had on overalls, at least one had no shirt under the bib.
Bubba golf.

My worst experiences with my Filipino BF were in Virginia Beach and near there. At the time the black/white tension was so strong it felt heavy and visible. He was a non entity in some places there an issue we never had in westerm PA, coastal Maine and NY state. FYI, breeders is generally not a racist term. Its is used by zero population growth types and those who don't like big families. It is a type of bigotry, but not racist in its nature. Much like treehugger isn't racist but a slur against certain kinds of nature lovers.

I thought it was used by the gay community to make fun of people who even when actively preventing pregnancy still end up with babies. By the way, don't go into a gay-friendly restaurant pregnant.

Squirrel shooting kept DH occupied a few months ago while home recovering from rotator cuff surgery. And then I found this gem and suggested it might be a form of secondary income?

I stuck out like a weirdo, and a couple of bitchy gay guys made fun of me for being a breeder. Not the worst thing, and most people didn't care. We just didn't know it was a gay place. Maybe they felt invaded. It was kinda when the families started moving into the neighborhood after a bunch of gay people fixed the place up. Maybe there was some hostility? I was pretty clueless to the whole situation. I have some hindsight on the whole thing.

My squad is primarily gay and there are plenty of times when I go places and am the only or one of a few straight people there. I've never had an experience like that. Even when I haven't been with them and have gone to those types of places with straight people. I have been hit on by a fair amount of women "assuming" since I'm in a gay bar or at a drag show.

I know that it was just two guys, and not the whole community. It was supposed to be an off-hand funny comment where you could infer that I was called a breeder because I was pregnant in a place that was filled with gay people. Hence my experience of the word "breeder". It wasn't like a whole thing. I don't need any coaching to handle it or change my mind about the gay community. Maybe the story is funnier spoken.

ZOOKEENE TATERS + MATERS HALOPINYO BAIL PEPR These people probably have kids being home schooled. I had a friend in high school that wrote like that. He was functionally illiterate. As it turns out, he has dyslexia, which wasn't a commonly known problem (and all very hush, hush, because learning disabilities were shameful). He ended up dropping out of high school and going to a tech school for auto mechanics. Last I heard, he had a great job working at the Mercedes dealership and was highly respected as a top notch mechanic. His kids may be homeschooled by his lovely wife, a teacher. They may be doing better than my kids, who have 2 parents with post doc degrees, but have trusted the schools to deal with the teaching, because it isn't our thing. Try to be kind. You never know someone's situation.
