"Well, I was sitting in my trailer and I was shooting the squirrels in my bird feeder, I missed, and shot out the window of my pick up truck."
yes, i was part of the conversation. No, I did not shoot out the window of my truck.

Were you on an episode of either North Woods or Lonestar Law?
Shooter have a valid hunting license? Is it squirrel hunting season?

Were you on an episode of either North Woods or Lonestar Law? Shooter have a valid hunting license? Is it squirrel hunting season? No, just every day life. There is no squirrel season, and it was just a pellet gun. No license needed. And I'm kind of embarassed that I know this.

I have a preppy version of the same story. It involves driving golf balls into a lake ... and visiting a boat supply shop later. Sadly, I cannot claim that I only heard this story. To my credit, I do not tell this story expecting sympathy. I'm not sure if mentioning that no alcohol was involved helps me or hurts me. All that I can say for myself is that it happened 25 years ago.

Years ago, a friend co-worker and I were speaking with another co-worker. That co-worker lived in a rural area of west Tennessee. Her home did not have an indoor toilet. Outhouse only.
During the summer months, the co-worker told us, they kept a shotgun in the outhouse and when they were using the outhouse, and to pass the time while doing their business, they would shoot rattlesnakes as they travelled by it.

Are you talking with my DH? He'd so do/say that! I have stopped TD from doing this! Instead, he put Sheldon out at the bird feeder to chase away the squirrels. As if the cat can differentiate between a squirrel and a bird. Both are game to be chased!

Yeah, I have a female senior citizen neighbor who shoots the squirrels with a pellet gun. Especially after the 5 or 6th gin and tonic. Claims it doesn't hurt them and it probably doesn't because she's blind as a bat even when sober. Our home lots are only 65 feet wide which puts her within 20 feet of her neighbor's house.
Other neighbors have been known to shoot the white-wing doves with shotguns. Yes, right here in town. While the dove are sitting on the power lines.
Shocked the *&%@! out of me to watch an episode of Northwoods Law and learn there are states that have a squirrel season.

Right now, when the hummingbirds feed, Sheldon meows at the door wanting in. Hummingbirds scare him.

Lucy only played with the mouse she caught. She did not kill it. Nephew came here and sat a trap and got it that way.

I sat out on back steps and shot two big horn worms that were chewing on tomato plants. I used a BB gun. Ex was at work and kiddo was in school. I was in a pissy mood that morning so worms bore the brunt of my mood! I figured the 30-06 would cause to much damage to rest of garden. No alcohol was involved

My husband and I try to name the times we are being our own stereotype. It can get pretty funny. It started a little innocuous and then it kinda became a challenge to turn stereotype behavior into over the top troupe sitcom script dialog. 🙃

I don't think of your story as redneck, swamp, as much as stupid. Rednecks live exclusively in the Deep South so don't you be poaching the term. Instead it reminds me of the time, our son woke us up in the middle of the night to take him to the ER. He was nine or ten. He had been lying in his bed trying to kill the moths swarming around his bunkie light with a hammer. He dropped it on his head. This child grew up to be a National Merit finalist and a CPA. Apparently, you can fix stupid.

DBF and I joke about taking a pistol when we go outside at night. We only have the real deal, no pellet or BB guns. One of those might have been handy last summer when we had squirrels everywhere. Since I wasn’t necessarily joking, my solution was to just stop going outside at night.

Yup. You should be fine. A couple of years back I was driving on the rural section of 386/I269 heading north between Collierville and Fisherville to get off at route 64 east to go further east to attend a funeral. ((I was so far away from civilization where the church and funeral was being held I thought I might need a passport. But I digress.) While on the rural section of 385/269 I saw two Turkey buzzards ahead of me dining on something on the side of the road. All of a sudden a bald eagle dropped in to shoo the vultures away. It claimed its meal. Pretty neat.

Who has eaten squirrel?
I know people who do actively hunt them as a food source but didn't think to ask what they taste like. Maybe rat.

I’ve eaten squirrel as a kid. My grandfather used to shoot them and made squirrel stew. I don’t remember what it tasted like but I think I ate it.

I love squirrels...like pets! Could never shoot one.
My DHs friend showed us a picture of a bobcat his dad shot when he was out deer hunting. He was afraid the bobcat would get the deer he shot, or something. I felt bad about that, too. 😢

Squirrels are OK, just another dark meat, good in a stew. Not as fatty as raccoon, but have a decent flavor. Herd to describe, they’re used to be more hunters around here, and we most definitely have a season. There’s even trained squirrel dogs to help you find them.
It’s easier to harvest deer and an effort per pound basis, so we don’t eat many squirrels.
