There's many places by me testing for free. What I don't understand is they say bring insurance card if applicable. So if you have insurance they bill it? The whole thing doesn't pertain to me, but I'm curious.

I'm guessing they just cover what insurance doesn't cover.

But they don’t advertise that part because what 95% or the population cares about or hear : the money is not coming directly out of my pocket. Kids are often asymptomatic. So, they just go to school and no ones knows there's an issue until all the teachers start getting sick?
Sounds like a winning proposition...

Test Iowa is free. I was able to get an appointment when I wanted to. I am now seeing that people are having to drive to sites that are several hours to the site and the same drive back. Supposedly anyone who wants one can get one.
I also was tested before my medical procedure. I am guessing that one will be billed to Medicare and insurance. They better not charge for an office call. I didn't get out of the car and they did not get in my car.

I see the word "free" a lot when it really means "I don't have to pay out of pocket and someone else gets the bill". In the case of COVID-19 testing that's probably very good public policy. The sooner we can inform the people who have it, the sooner they can (please, God) isolate and the sooner their contacts can be tested.

Hugs azucena. Whatever you need to get through this has been my working motto. Thanks for the thread! MD has been testing a LOT. So our cases are not really low (around 12 per 100,000) but the positivity rate is hovering around 4% statewide. I’m confused by our district’s plan...they make a big deal about attendance and 9-3:15 school day, but also insist that kids won’t be penalized for completing work on their family’s schedule rather than live. But that’s verbal and mostly in the fine print. I guess they’re trying not to publicize it to encourage kids to attend live? The board has not approved the current plan but basically gave commentary and input and will take up the revised plan in a couple of weeks. I guess we’ll see...We’ll try the public virtual option but are poised for the pivot to homeschool any time it’s not working for us and DS. In the spirit of making basic review more fun, I ordered the math explosion MSB game-answering flash card questions moves you forward, periodically gets you a scoop of baking soda, and the first one to the finish line dumps their cup into the vinegar to make the volcano explode. DS was all over it Dunno if it’s worth the price tag but seems like you could make your own version pretty easily.

I just posted a lengthy reply to my niece on FB- she has 8-year old twins and she had a long, agonized post about their decision to home-school the girls. It's more feasible for them than most (and she admits that)- she's a SAHM with an MBA and he's a partner in a Big 6 firm. She feels the girls definitely need more structure and socialization but doesn't want to put them at risk. They have started getting together occasionally with school friends whose parents share their ideas about precautions. We've suggested teaching pods but I discovered that when you try and find them on the Web the search results quickly turn to Portable On Demand Storage". My SIL's response to her daughter's long post was, :Whatever". REALLY? And yes, I understand azucena's need to take a break. COVID- 19 is one of many topics I can deal with up to a point but then I feel like I know enough and going into the weeds beyond that would just make me angry, fearful, depressed, etc. and I have to back away.

And now I’m looking at the early science textbooks I got for DS two years ago and surfing for copies of the next level up. I need my brain to turn off for a bit now please

Our local school is offering options. Return to school in person, totally online or something in between. They are giving a cafeteria of choices hoping to retain students in the local school. One of the neighboring districts is doing a 4 day week so they can do a deep cleaning of the school one one of those days.

Little granddaughter will be joining a pod of 8 kindergarten for 5 days/week Very happy as she was so sad without the friends from her preK PreK was a waldschool, the children were outside most days, rain shine snow unless it was a bad storm. School was on beautiful wooded multi acre grounds with an assisted living home. Grands would come down for story time with the littles. Had to close school due to danger to elders. The school with another 2 schools organized pods.

I guess the girl that got suspended, and then unsuspended, had a point. They now have 9 positives at the school where the girl took the photo of everyone mashed into the hallway. "Nine people have tested positive for COVID-19 at a Georgia high school where a photo of a packed hallway went viral earlier this week. Six students and three staff members who were at the school last week have tested positive, according to a letter sent to parents Saturday that was acquired by ABC News. The positive cases were reported to the school after private tests." abcnews.go.com/US/people-test-positive-coronavirus-georgia-school-viral-crowded/story?id=72263772

Everything about this makes you sound seriously wealthy. 😍😍 I don't know what a waldschool is - but it seems like those types of names are for schools for uber rich people. Like Country Day Schools. Or, possibly for very poor schools - sometimes they get general names too - but those are usually like "Title 9" or something. I think we all want out kids to go to the school you described. 😀

We’ve never spent money on eating out, shows etc when our kids were in school college but spent on tuition for them. Kids are same with the grandkids, I am helping with this tuition. They’re saving by no commuter costs into city which is quite expensive. In NYC in early 1900s schools also stayed outside even in winter. Waldschools (wood or forest schools) are common in Germany . German playgrounds are very different , saw one that had piles of lumber, saws, hammers nails and kids could build whatever, don’t worry as much about lawsuits[br Outdoors most of time was really healthy and fun for kiddies - mud puddles !! ]Little GD was sick only one day in nursery school, most little kids get sick a lot and bring home to family. Putting nursery schools and assisted living together was becoming quite common here and really nice for both groups. Sadly not now

Priority testing, and testing at all in some areas, is for rich people, athletes, government workers, and those in the hospital - probably in that order. I don't even know how schools would go about doing any testing? Or, not rich parents who couldn't afford to pay for it out-of-pocket? It's a cluster. I’m so sorry you’re in that position.

I was told today by the health department I can get tested since I am high risk but I should avoid leaving home except to go to the ER if I develop problems breathing. So far, my only other weird symptom today is a weird taste in my mouth I can't get rid of... They said tests are taking 14 days to come back and since there is no treatment for COVID, they tell people to self-quarantine unless you are having problems breathing. There are bound to be a lot of sick people out there if they aren't even bothering to test people...

They both look like they have clinics doing walk-in testing for anyone without referrals.

This is the first time I've been awake for more than 20 minutes in over 2 days and I feel like shit. I called the health department and they said they would test me but there's not really any point since there's no treatment and it takes so long right now to get results. They said they aren't testing people who just have symptoms because their illness will likely be gone by the time the results come back. They said if I develop problems breathing then call and go to the ER. Otherwise, stay home. I'd guess they aren't testing because they want to open the schools.

Order a pulse ox. By the time you have problems breathing with this it’s late.

My son said last night that he thought he was also getting sick. He's still sleeping so I don't know how he is. I'm not supposed to leave home for 10 days. They said they have no treatment for COVID other than oxygen here and they don't want you in the ER unless you have trouble breathing because otherwise if you are positive you just put our limited healthcare workers at risk for nothing, since there's nothing they can do you can't do at home.

My friend's daughter who had it got an inhaler the 2nd of the 3 times she went to the ER. I believe they also use steroids. It's hard to believe they wouldn't have those things just about anywhere.

I didn't believe the medical assist who called me back from the local clinic, so I called the public health department. BOTH told me they will not see you here unless you have breathing problems. It sounds like your friend's daughter had breathing problems. So far, I don't, thankfully. I just feel like shit. I do find it irritating that I had to get sick at one of the two local stores I shopped at. It would seem they would want to know if we have community spread, but apparently not if everyone is just being told to stay home and not waste tests.

Could you enlist a neighbor to pick up a delivery for you? I’m concerned that if both of you are sick there may not be anyone to sound the alarm...and the silent lung damage aspect worries the sh!t out of me. Also second what @lizard Queen said. Dexamethasone is cheap and widely available and shown to be somewhat effective. Take care.

Suggest you do go to the ER, there are some treatments. St least you’ll be able to have your oxygen level checked and get the Covid test there. Don’t be so passive! Bring your son also Someone mentioned dexamethasone
