I won't mention the name of the poster who once had Palm Beach as part of his moniker but he once posted on the boards he got caught up in an undertow/rip current and was swept north up the Florida coast for like 12 miles. Once he reached shore, he walked as many miles back to the area where his journey originated. He was at his car when he remembered his towel and other belongings were still on the beach. That was a two mile round trip walk.

That's so scary. I was just explaining this to my kids at the beach the other day. If the waves are big, I won't go past my knees/ thighs/waist, depending on the size. I only go out chest deep in there are pretty much no waves. You can totally have fun body surfing in knee deep water if the waves are really big.

People get caught in them on the Great Lakes every year. Swimming parallel to shore seems counterintuitive, but if you try to swim against them you will loose. Sadly several do every year.

People die of something similar in inland lakes and rivers too. They fixate on the place on land that they are trying to swim to and swim directly toward it. If there's a current in the water, this can easily lead to them trying to fight the current to get to a particular place on shore.

I just read a very sad local story where they just recovered the bodies of 2 teens who went into a local river to rescue a man and his 5-year old daughter. The two young men literally gave their lives to the save 2 strangers. I'm sure the river was up and running fast after our recent heavy rains.
