For a multiyear war, I think we can handle it. 9/11 wasn't that long ago and the country united. I don't know. Our country has never been as divided as it is now. Through all this, somehow I believe that we are going to come out stronger and better. I consider this time as part of teenage angst. (Don't knock off my rose-colored glasses.)

imagine if the CV19 virus were 10x as virulent. I won't go further. just think about it. I've thought this several times over the last few months. What if it were more contagious? Or what if the symptoms were more 'real' like Ebola? Would that have made people sit up, pay attention, and take this seriously. Hard to compare Ebola to the flu. I sometimes think if it were a much more serious disease, perhaps we would have actually ended up better. That's hard to wrap my head around. This inspires 2 trains of thought for me; 1. If it didn't affect them personally the same people wouldn't care. 2. It is real with real symptoms, we just aren't seeing much of that on the media for some reason.

This is more about the vaccine conspiracy but I think the opinion piece does well to explain why people were so hysterical over Ebola but not COVID too. www.cnn.com/2020/08/01/opinions/vaccine-fears-public-health-messaging-yasmin/index.htmlA doctor in Texas once told me that a woman walked into a pediatrician's office in the fall of 2014 and said: "Give my daughter the Ebola vaccine." The biggest Ebola epidemic in history was spreading across West Africa and a man infected with the virus had recently traveled to Dallas.
"There is no vaccine for Ebola," the pediatrician said (the first US Food and Drug Administration-approved Ebola vaccine was announced in December 2019). "But it is flu season and I can give your daughter the flu vaccine." The mother scoffed and said, "Flu vaccine? I don't believe in those things!" before storming out of the doctor's office.
Humans struggle to weigh risk. The flu kills as many as 60,000 Americans a year. But it was fears of an Ebola epidemic in 2014 that forced some schools and businesses to shut, despite the fact that a total of two people died from the virus in the US.

Until we have another Preston Brooks / Charles Sumner event, I will not concede that we are more divided than EVER. But certainly modern history- 50 years or so, we are in quite a pickle.
