Hard candy for road trips as a kid - those round sour balls things. And Mom's cough drops. Mom has all sorts of breathing issues and always had cough drops. They were cherry so if we were desperate, we'd get one of those. Nowadays, we usually have cheese sticks, crackers, stuff like that. I do sometimes get hard candy. The kids are used to it in my Mom's car. So the cycle continues...

Back in the summer of '66 my family and I went on a six week cross-country trip from Massachusetts to California and back with many stops in between. I don't recall any special edible treats at all let alone candy as dad was a dentist.

Some hard candy- I like butterscotch. OK. I'm old.
Protein bars, bananas, sunflower seeds. At gas station convenience stores- individually-bagged pickles (especially the hot and spicy variety), hard-boiled eggs and cut-up vegetables. For the trip to SC I'm likely to bring more with me and buy less on the stops.

We were too poor for candy. We were too poor for vacations. Sometimes we went to the country, about an hour away. Mom always packed fruit. Sometimes a whole watermelon. I don't particularly like candy to this very day, but I LOVE fruit!

The little old ladies in church always offered us candy. I always refused. So, my little sister started making the rounds early. When the women pulled candy from linty pockets, she would say "What about my sister? Can I have some for my big sister, too?" She got twice as much that way.

This lead to a phone conversation with my sister. We could come up with almost 3 whole memories of being in cars when we were kids. The only food we could come up with was graham crackers...

We always had road trip candy. I liked the root beer barrels.
Now if I go anywhere with my dad it is Werthers.

I don't remember long road trips. But before my parents divorced, my brother and I always had to get snacks for the trip home from grandma's. It was a whole 2 hours. Grandma made them and put in brown paper bags.
We got a mini box of raisins, chocolate chip cookies and peanut butter cracker sandwiches made with mini Ritz crackers. My poor grandma made those for us. You couldn't just buy a box of them premade in those days.
The favorite snack as adults on the long trip from the DC burbs to Knoxville was one of those Hormel snack packages with crackers, cheese and pepperoni. You get a lot more choices when shopping for snacks at the super Walmart in Front Royal.
During football season when we are on the road often to our alma mater, I have a snack bag. It contains napkins, plastic silverware and paper plates for the hotel for restaurant leftovers. Snack contents include peanut butter cheese crackers, jerky, Reese cups and Kind bars.
When I travel south, I look for Lance white cheddar popcorn. I can't find it up north anymore. I love that stuff.

For airplane trips, I liked NECCO wafers. They were discontinued when I was traveling a couple times a month. They are apparently back, but no airplane trips for me in the near future.

Can't you just go online with phone and have Amazon drop off your next order at a designated truck stop - via drone? Would never be without goodies for long trip

I forgot that my mom would take us to the shore for the day or a weekend. She always stopped to get chicken from a favorite restaurant plus salad and fruit. We didn’t do that often, but it was fun and yummy!

I love NECCO wafers. I was really bummed when I heard they were discontinued. When they started again, my mom found me 2 packs and they disappeared in 2 days. 😜 When we visit family on the other side of the state with my DD, I’ll let her pick out a candy she wants, but she has to wait until we cross the Bridge before she can eat them. The Bridge is about halfway between our place and the destination. But it’s only on the way there, but not the way back. From when I was a kid, I don’t really remember having candy on road trips. Many times we had snacks, such as chips and pretzels.

Not candy, but I have to have Pizza flavored Combos.
I have never bought Combos in the grocery store, just gas station convenience store or airport.

For long trips, H. has sunflower seeds.
I used to travel with Twizzlers strawberry or cherry. I'm a bit on the comfy side so they are out. I'll use that as an incentive to slim down!
I have used tic tacs when it's about 30 minutes until lunch. I stopped that. I took a long time to learn I needed to take a bag of food with me when we went driving on weekends and other times. Those were some long hungry days.
Now, my travel food is a couple of Quest bars, Premier Protein Shake, jerky, and small chocolate Hershey bars. Trick or treat size Twizzlers. The chocolate bars and Twizzlers get snacked on. The other items are if lunch is delayed. We usually have a cooler with sodas and beer for H. for later. Coffee and water are little sips so I dewater at the convenience of the car.
Cracker Barrel has Necco and other vintage candies. I don't know if they are open or not.
When I was a kid, it was a Big Enough nougat. And Bings double pack.

I used to chew Fruit Stripe gum as a kid on road trips. My mom found some recently and I got all excited. Good lord that stuff is nasty! My palate has apparently undergone some changes since I was a kid. Ditto and ditto! Same here! Used to be a favorite of mine, too.

Our cars almost always have a movie theatre box of Gobstoppers, Sprees or Runts in the glove box (bought at Dollar General) because they don't melt in the heat and they're good when you just want a little something to "keep you entertained" while driving! And I agree with whoever said sunflower seats - great when you want something to chew on but you don't need excessive calories! Yes - I'm a boredom eater. And riding / driving in a car is boring to me!

My palate has apparently undergone some changes since I was a kid. I found ages ago that I had too many fillings and when I chewed gum, little bits of filling would end up in the gum. Maybe that doesn't happen with the filling material they use now but then there's my bridge that's past its "sell-by" date and could fail at any minute...no more gum for me. Like you, though, I may have lost my taste for gum. I think it tastes good the first 5 minute sand then it's tasteless.
