that he would not be going to pay his respects to John Lewis. because of that his projected % of black vote will probably go from 6% to 3 %...

Didn't want to upset his white nationalist supporters. That and he knew he was probably not welcome.

Not sure why he simply could have said nothing about it.

Well if you base your presidency on denigrating one part of the electorate while elevating another part you tend not to be welcome everywhere.

Didn't want to upset his white nationalist supporters. That and he knew he was probably not welcome. and the white supporters who would declare they aren't white nationalist supporters (or bigots or racist) BUT who are afraid of losing their 'privilege' by the government giving more of those "people" the opportunity or right to move into their neighborhoods or schools or jobs or whatever other thing they are afraid of losing... Not to mention Trump is trying to play the "law and order" card - and I would think it's hard to say nice words to honor a civil rights leader while also declaring current protesters terrorists.... It's probably best he just stays away and stays quiet.

I think he isn't going because he won't be the center of attention. He likely isn't invited to the funeral, so Trump wants to snub John Lewis and family before he is snubbed himself.

Not sure why he simply could have said nothing about it. actually, it is worth answering that question.
the ONLY reason I can think of is that there is more mileage to him disrespecting than respecting.
otherwise, he would not want to hide it?

Now you are assuming that he has actually thought this through - and that is assuming an awful lot. IIMO ii is more likely his unability/unwillingness to keep his trap shut and his nastiness to himself.

Seeing as how thinking ahead and introspection are not his strong suits, I'm betting that knowing how his trap might flap and nastiness might ensue probably had nothing to do with this decision. This guy is all about the snubs.
