Can anyone recommend a good cell phone that doesn't cost a million dollars? It's time to replace mine, and the new model is over $1300. No way. I keep my cell phones until they don't work right; don't chase the latest and greatest, but also don't want used or an older model that soon won't operate.
I was looking at the Samsung A50 for $199, but read they have gps issues. I really only use talk, text and gps. Now I'm considering the new small iPhone SE for $400. I read that being a smaller phone, the touch keyboard is also small, which I'll have problems seeing.
So who has a newer cell phone that they love? Thanks!

New 2020 iPhone SE is a steal at $400, I got mine through Xfinity Mobile for $200. It is the same size as the iPhone 8, not tiny like the 2016 SE.
It has the same chip as the iPhone 11 so software will be updated for years.

I got the IPhone 11 at about $400 and love it! I mostly use it like you do, talk, text and gps, but do use some of the other features occasionally. I have an Apple Watch for the fall detection since I am at fall risk and love that I can answer calls with the watch after it syncs with the IPhone.

@aj Was it hard to set up? Due to Covid, the stores are only activating, not helping with set up. I'm concerned I'll get stuck with the fingerprint thing.

Was it a promotion through your carrier? I'm on Verizon.

Not at all although I did have a younger friend help me sync it the first time. She also helped with setting the features I want and turning off the ones I don’t want. I probably could have done it myself, but I don’t have a lot of patience with stuff like that.

It has good reviews. I did read though some people had gps issues after an update in 2019. Did your son?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 and it still works 3 years in. I also have an iPhone 11 Pro for work and I don't like it. When my Samsung quits I'm getting another Samsung.

Then I had to order an iPhone, which is expected to arrive in a couple of weeks. I got the iPhone 11 through Xfinity. It's purple. Looking forward to using the touchless pay features when I decide to venture back out into the world again. I'm glad to see someone of my approximate vintage is using and enjoying the same devices. Did I mention my new iPhone is purple?

The new galaxy is over $1300. I love my phone, but I refuse to spend that much! I hope yours lasts awhile. I think mine is a little over 3 yrs. it's starting to have multiple problems.

I like my Samsung but not sure the model. Have had it a couple of years and my only criteria is it had to fit in the pocket of my pants so it's small.
I use it for phone, text, camera, calendar. No GPS that I know of but wouldn't use that feature anyway.
I really like Android ......... DH has a Windows phone that he fusses with all the time.
I'll keep my Android

My iPhone 6+ is fine for now. I’m hoping to not replace till G5 phones are available. Don’t know when these are expected?

We bought these to replace the iPhone 6s we had that were running out of memory and becoming no longer supported. We bought them outright, figuring buy at the top and we won’t need to replace them for another 5-6 years.

Both of us have the iPhone 6. We really haven’t had problems but you never know.

We were trying to wait around for 5G, but didn’t want to buy first generation of 5G phones due to potential bugs. I asked my tech advisor (much younger neighbor who works in software development) whether I should look for a 5G-capable phone, but he didn't think it mattered as I don't use a lot of data, and the phones that come out after 5G is more widely available will likely have even more spiffy features. The purple did look more like purple-tinted silver in the picture, but it's the closest I'm likely to get to a purple iPhone, so it's fine.

I think smart phone users are happier with their selection if they stick with the same technology platform as they update their phone. That is, if you currently have an Android phone, get another Android phone. If you use Apple products, such as an iPad or iPhone, an iPhone would probably be the way to go. This avoids having to learn a new operating system and adapt to changes in the touch and feel every time you change phones.

I’m in the Apple ecosystem for everything but have used Android with previous work phones and its perfectly fine. If I was choosing today which to go with the Apple Watch would be the differentiator. I’ve pretty much had one on one of my wrists since 2015. You can usually find a series 3 discounted somewhere for less than $200.

Still, the first two phones I got my son were iphones. He started with a 4S and then moved up to an SE but he was always complaining about them. When he started having issues with his SE he said he didn't want another one ever again. He moved to Android and was much happier. It just seems like a more versatile operating system rather than doing everything Apple's way.

5 years ago, I had a Samsung Galaxy and they had “upgraded” their operating system to Jelly Bean. I HATED it! The very next day, I got the iPhone 6 and I still use it to this day. Part of the appeal for me with the iPhone was being able to use my fingerprint to unlock it since the company I worked for required a 6 digit password to have their email on my phone.
