I thought spook was slang for spy? I haven't used it since, to the best of my knowledge, I don't know any spies. What else is it used for? I don't even want to say. You can find it at urbanlegend.com. Basically the same as the n word. I'm surprised so many of you have never heard these terms. Not "from here" probably explains a lot about me. And it is not like I go out of my way to learn derogatory terms. Add that to the circle of friends I have and I am just not exposed to this.

I never heard the word used in a deragatory way, either. I only learned it was bad when I met my hs BFF. She told me that it was one of her nicknames, and when I didn't react, she explained how it was bad. She's white, btw, with light brown hair and green eyes. I don't know how or why she got that for a nickname.

I never have heard that word used. I do know "coon" is racist. Like I said that was a word used in a derogatory way in my high school. Not by me. I have not used that word.

I think this is a problem that permeates the issue of racism... the separation of the independent existence of racism from the intent to use words or commit acts with intentional bias.
People frequently don't mean to use words or commit acts with intentional bias, but may still be perpetuating language and action that sustains racism.
These conversations are good and necessary to that process of separation and building that understanding.
