I wonder often if the US had followed the pandemic playbook, would we have been able to keep it off our land all together? Or how small of a number could of it had been? I read a bunch of emails that roamed between the epidemiologists all over the country in the months leading up to this. Everyone saw the train wreck coming, and was hair tearing out frustrated at the lack of preparation......even with a road map that had been prepared for them! I can’t imagine being these people, sitting on the sidelines and not being able to do a damn thing about it. The playbook might not have fully solved the problem, but there would have been a hell of a lot less pain.

I find I don't want to even wear the Americana-style t-shirts I have that I usually wear in the summer. I'm embarrassed to be an American, and I wish my state could join Canada (I felt the same in 2000), though they'd never have us, and I live on the redder side of the state anyway.

My mother posted a meme on FB yesterday that was a Jewish WW2 yellow star with a "vaccination number" on it approving one to work during the US pandemic...
It had an comment about how bad it is that this is what the US has now become.
My previously rational, NURSE mother now believes this pandemic is mostly BS and that the vaccination will be fake but required for all citizens in the new society made to control people.
She watches Faux News and believes everything they say it seems.

You don't have to wonder. Look at our curve and the curve for the EU. That should be enough to show that competent leadership matters. Places that are really surging have incompetent or autocratic leaders: US, brazil, Russia, Latin America. Notice a theme. But CA is also surging. As Pogo said: We have met the enemy and he is us". My county, San Mateo, is doing o.k. but I still see a lot of stupid going on. I hike locally nearly every day. There are a lot of people who are not wearing masks with the highest proportion being youngish men (< 40) maskless and riding mountain bikes. I don't want them breathing on me (who wears a N95) when they blow by! Part of the problem is the mask is "recommended" when exercising outdoors...and no enforcement. I nearly lost it when some unmasked jerk drove his mountain bike through a small group of masked hikers. He looked about 35, not some young kid. Smiling as people yelled at him. Next time I'm taking a picture and posting on Next Door. Social shaming! My spouse doesn't want to wear a mask when exercising - something about not being able to breathe and some BS about breathing in too much carbon dioxide due to the mask. I do feel for him on the not breathing because I'm not breathing well at all this summer and the mask is not helping me. The inhaler my mother gave me, however, is a godsend. My doctor refused to give me an inhaler prescription without being tested for covid.

According to Adm. Brett Giroir "none of us lie" and they're "completely transparent with the American people." Right. What a relief.

Because, even if your governor is responsible, the proportion of people who support the president do not believe this is an issues. So, if there was consensus, and following science, we would not be where we are today. I will keep repeating this until people finally understand: you can't have apeeing section in the pool and expect the pee to be contained in that one section!

Viruses want to do one thing, reproduce. As long as we make it easy for them, they will do what they do. They do not respect borders, and prey on stupidity, and man, are we being stupid.

I don't know what was in the playbook, but it is possible there is something that we didn't do that CA had no control over. Like, the whole PPE fiasco. And the whole testing fiasco - not much CA could have done about that. CA can't close their borders to all the red state idiots. And they are adjacent to AZ and Oregon. The rural areas have a lot of "no mask" people. And also a lot of people who think going to CA is their god given right! Because borders only count when they are national borders. And, there are a lot of people inland in CA that hate CA and they are true Americans, not pansy coastal CA. Would their culture be different if all those idiots cared more about their state than their conspiracy theories?

Newsome didn't do stupid things like some red state governors did like forbid mayors not to open or not to wear face masks. We in the Bay Area have been slow to open but some counties like Santa Clara (most of Silicon Valley) are spiking and are back to closing down. Southern CA which tends to be a lot redder is seeing a huge surge. What a mess!

I have been keeping a very close eye on Santa Clara (no guesses as to why LOL) and it really is not surging and it has a 7 day test positivity rate of 2.7% and trending down again. Nor is it closing down again as it had not opened yet. Only this week did (were?) They opening hair salons and outdoor dining. Looking at it with an even narrower focus it looks like most new cases are concentrated in downtown SJ, the poorer part of the the city with very high density, multi generational living. No doubt caused by high rents. You are correct though that the big surge is in SoCal. That and (relatively seen) the very red inland counties. ETA: during one of his pressers recently Newsom mentioned that CA has been sending PPE to several other states including Arizona. He keeps adding to our stockpile as well to prepare for a second wave

Well, now that we removed the CDC from the pandemic, I'm sure the truth will flow from the White House - not.

pulmonarymd Ah, but you forget that there's a vaccine right around the corner, just down the road a piece, by the end of the summer, and before the election. Operation Warp Speed. What? You don't believe that a safe and effective vaccine can be developed at warp speed? But those 13 or 14 companies working on it... Color me skeptical.

More like billions of doses. 500M will cover the EU, but there won't be many left over.
