My Lenovo is actually a convertible too, but it only cost me $180. I don't know about notetaking with a stylus, but it definitely has a touchscreen. My youngest likes to use it for his online gaming.
Ive seen students using a surface, and I think it would work well for that situation. They seem to be very powerful.
You know, mpl, that might be a good thing for his father to help out with.

He definitely wants a touchscreen. We have one Chromebook with and one without and the touchscreen is nice to have. I see some that come with a stylus and others that don't. I'm not sure if some you can write on and others you can't?
Sorry @donethat , didn't mean to hijack this thread! [img class="smile" src="//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/embarrassed.png" alt=" "] no problem! I've learned a lot.

I reached out to a neighbor who works in the field and he recommended a Lenovo or Asus, just like many posters did. It will sort of come down to a choice between size of screen vs. clarity of screen. Given that my purpose is strictly online meetings, performances, classes - I think size is my preference at this point. I'll probably add some earbuds/earphones so I don't disrupt DH's tv viewing when I participate. This will be my social connection device only, no email, no documents, only human access, aka my toy. Real work happens on my desktop.

No, a stylus will work on any touch screen and are cheap to buy. Teenage boy in college will lose the damn thing if it came with the laptop quick enough. Worst case scenario it's just a program that the one with a stylus has that you might have to get a program for the other one, but I doubt that's the case (could be wrong). He wants to be able to take notes on it like a tablet. I wonder how inconvenient that would be if it wasn't one that folded flat?
huh. I'm not sure about the stylus thing because I don't have one. not sure why I don't have one? May get one. Mine is convertible. I have a Lenovo Yoga too. I think it would be uncomfortable to write a lot of notes on the screen if it did not convert flat, personally.

Okay, I've decided on a 17 inch Lenovo. I'm going to venture out to the store Friday to see if I can get one. If that doesn't work well, I'll place an order for curbside pickup on July 11. I just got invited to serve on another civic committee with virtual meetings so it's time to get moving.

You could also try ordering directly from Lenovo too. I actually got a cheaper price from there. I had been looking at the Yoga for awhile, but I picked a couple of things that the store didn’t have.

So, this morning I found out that the computer I thought was the recommended machine for DS's college was actually for the college of design listed on the wrong page. His college recommends a Dell 2 in 1...which folds flat. Perfect.

I just bought a Dell Inspiron 2 in 1. So far, I really like having a touch screen. I can fold it all the way over and use it like an ipad as well.
