Not sure what you mean. I would hire any background as qualified, on a first come, first serve basis. using my own experience in hiring as a basis, without outreach to minority communities, there will be no diversity. . And then there's the little psychological study that indicates that people hire people who look like, act like, think like they themselves do. It takes some conscious effort to look objectively at candidates who fulfill the requirements for a position. In the past, I've witnessed bosses hire someone who "resembled" themselves - even though that person was far from the favorite of all the people involved in the interview/hiring process. I've never witnessed this kind of situation ending well.

"Sonic - SEO of Sonic is a long-time democrat donor who obsesses over diversity." Damn him for wanting diversity Diversity is great, as long as it's qualified for the job diversity. This always confuses me. The only time bosses/employers hire and pay for dead weight employees is when those employees are relatives/friends or the boss owes someone a favor or the boss is getting some kind of kickback or favors in return. Why would an employer higher dead weight (outside of nepotism)?? (cause crap - if I can have a business and get money from the government to 'diversify' - in quantities MORE than it costs me to employ dead weight employees... I'd have a shell business run by ghost employees in a heart beat! OK, not really. my moral compass is broken - but not that badly.)

ok. so you will hire any qualified applicant, but you do nothing for outreach.
did I get that right? because I think I did.
Used to hire. Been shut down and retired for 20 years last May. I hired on a first come first served basis. I wanted those with the drive to come and get their own position with the company. I hired any one with the qualifications for the positions open. Minorities in my company closely matched the densities in the surrounding area. It was my choice to make and I still stand by it. so, no outreach, right?
for the record- I HAVE NONE EITHER.
I am not trying to make you look bad, jma. it is standard practice.

Seems the conversation turned here. I was popping in for an update on our choices.
We are looking to some minor DIY, DD is taking the lead on these projects and mentioned home depot to get supplies, I mention switching to lowes as our usual because issues stated here about depot. and she got excited and said - lowes is woke, lol.
I hadn't heard that! but we are now Lowes shoppers. And planning to spend $$$.

My hiring by qualification had little to do with dead weight.

No outreach. I'm not even sure what you mean by that. My HR used all the regular approaches for filling open positions. Newspaper adds, online services, etc.

Newspaper adds, online services, etc. outreach means that you make a concerted effort to recruit QUALIFIED people from communities of color. it is something very few companies do, but it is a good way to develop a diverse workforce.
