I'd buy a lease return, but not sure about a rental. People abuse the hell out of rentals.

A lot of my vacations come to mind! Okay, now THAT is hilarious. I always used rental cars as a way to test drive different cars. I don't think I've rented the same model twice. Interesting. I prefer test drives because I can figure out pretty quickly whether a car might be compatible with me or not. Also, once I convinced my Mom to rent a Taurus when at her timeshare. Big mistake. I developed a dislike of the car the first day. It did not get better. Luckily though it was not a comfort issue but how the controls worked in the car issue.

I have bought rentals, they had a warranty, a camaro had to have a new tranny but it was covered. I would buy one again for the right price. Mine was a program car, a 2018 with what 15k on it, so far no issues. I thought I had a problem with the backup camera but it started working again so is ok.

I'd buy a lease return, but not sure about a rental. People abuse the hell out of rentals. Some people may be hard on rentals, but maintenance is more important than occasional hard use. Simple oil changes are the single biggest thing that can be done to prolong the life of a car. The second is probably regular car washes. With a lease return, dealer, or private purchase, you usually don’t have any idea how the car was maintained. I remember hearing a Regional Sales Manager reaming out a salesperson who had run a leased fleet car for 10K miles without an oil change. That kind of mileage between oil changes is the standard today, but that incident occurred back in the oil every 3K miles days. And it certainly appeared that the Salesperson would not have bothered to have the oil changed for many, many more miles if he had not been called on the carpet. With a rental, you can be pretty well assured that maintenance was done according to the manufacturer’s schedule. And most rental fleet sales outlets will provide the maintenance records to prove it. Maintenance is key. We all know folks who get a new car and in six months it looks like a rolling pile of junk. Then there are the folks whose 15 year old car looks like it just rolled off the show room floor.

The Sentra I bought before my Forester was an Enterprise rental. I got a great price for it, and it was a perfect vehicle for me.....that is, until my hips bit the dust. I think the 4 years I had it, i5 got an alignment, new tires and oil changes.
I did get it checked over by my mechanic though.

It was fine till the transmission died last week at 134,000 miles. We had bought 2 other cars off rental and were perfectly happy with them- this time the problems with their Continuously Variable Transmission in the 2010-2016 model years caught up with me. I would have been perfectly happy buying from Hertz but when the car died I was 3 hours away from home, staying with DS and DDIL (wonderful but hectic with 3 little kids around and I missed my house) and just wanted a deal done.

I'd buy a lease return, but not sure about a rental. People abuse the hell out of rentals. I bought a rental once. I drove it around for 2 years and only did routine maintenance. At the end of the two years I traded it in on a different vehicle for the same amount I paid for it. Rental companies will look for any reason to charge you for something, so people tend to take care of them. I've put a lot of people in rentals for auto claims and rented for vacations or other trips and wasn't about to let something happen to their car. Plus you know all the maintenance work has been done on time on a rental. I'd totally buy one again.

They don't seem like crazy good deals to me. I have been looking at Carvana and Costco. It all seems about the same.

I don't see any Toyota minivans available. I was looking for Honda minivans. They have Pilots, though, which are basically minivans without the slidiing doors.

We have an older pilot and we love, love, love it. But, I don't like the look of the newer ones (ours is 10 years old). The new ones really look like a minivan. Ours being more square looked more like a suburban. You can't go wrong with a Honda.

I don’t think the “people abuse rentals” really matters. I’m not sure what people are really doing, other than getting them dirty or diving faster than normal. And the companies do a good job of cleaning them up. If they’re not wrecked they should be good. Rental companies actually do all the maintenance early so that the cats don’t go over mileage while out on a rental.
DS bought a rental, hasn’t had any problems other than someone backing up into his driver door.
DD will need to get a car in Sept, but would be hard for her to buy now, she would have to leave vehicle with someone in US for a couple months, then could be shipped to Hawaii with her belongings. But she already researched vehicle purchase in Hawaii and prices are about same as in continental US.

We had a talk about cars, and we have decided to put off buying a fourth car. My husband and I will probably still work from at least half, if not more, of the time. My daughter's school seems to be leaning towards a modified schedule where it is half in person, half online. We haven't heard anything from my son's school, but other schools seem to be exploring modified schedules. So, the chances we will need all 4 cars on the same day seem pretty small. We can either carpool, or take Uber, or ride a bike to work, etc. If it gets bad, we will buy a car - but for now, I get a pass on having more car payments.

I want to avoid upgrading my 12 year 121k eleantra as long as I can but looked to to see if there were any steals. The prices weren't steals and for what I'm looking for apparently Hertz bought a lot on the lower end which isn't want I want either. Oh well, guess another year or two with my old ass car.

These are likely cars that would have come on to the sales market anyway (or gone through auction).

I take good care of my vehicles. My truck hubs took over looks rather rough now but its 14 years old. I clean it up good every so often and still looks good. But he uses it as a work truck so to be expected. I think it may have 150k or more miles on it.
We keep both in garages. My "new" one now has 23000 miles on it, ready for a oil change. I don't wait for 5000 miles and long as they are under warranty have the oil changed at the dealership, doesn't cost that much more. Hubs said not knowing the history of this, also have the tranny serviced. He says oil changes and filters are the cheapest car maintenance we can do. My cars are pristine no matter how long I have them.
With the prices of new ones, program or rental returns will likely be my purchases from now on. I have no problem with that.
