Heck I am jealous of your husband DIY skills.... your backyard (seriously jealous). Just started on the yard yesterday, need to finally finish painting the downstairs basement bathroom by this weekend ; then basement next. And let’s not forget half bath upstairs that has the leak. Sounds like good projects for your brother. He helped and is helping with the yard. I asked him to paint our fence 3 years ago and still regret it till this day - so no. I will do the painting thank you. Look guys I asked how to curb or cut back on the grocery bill while keeping everyone fed not how to keep my brother occupied. He is helping around the house at best he can and if he could have a job he would have one.

My MIL had money saved back too, but see how long that lasts when you are in assisted living for many years. It eats it up fast. She had some left not a whole lot about $10k and it went to the state. But we have and are paying taxes so I don't feel bad for her getting some benefit. If they can give trillions of tax breaks to businesses that don't need it, won't hurt to help the elderly when they need it. She would be very upset if she knew that she is not paying for her care now. Ever once in awhile she will ask if she has enough money to pay for where she is, we just say yes. She will then say do I have enough, hubs says yes, then she says, well then I won't worry about it.
Mom was a bit better off, her savings didn't run out till about the last few months. Medicaid only paid for a month or two of her care.

I will say she is paying all her SS and tiny pension and is allowed $50 a month for personal items.
