I'm 5'2", and my starting weight was 232, I am now at 165.
I have been carefully watching what I eat since last July and I have lost 67 lbs. as of this morning.
At first all I did was watch portion amounts, and cut down on junk -- and I lost 30 lbs in 5 months.
Then I gave up white flour and white sugar, yup, I gave them up, and I have never felt better. And what a difference it has made.
Then this past December I started following the 17 Day Diet -- and it really kicked my weight loss into high gear. There are four cycles, each cycle adds a little bit more food -- but all good stuff (no processed or packaged stuff). The goal is to mix it up, so your body isn't used to the same thing over and over. It's just good, clean eating, focusing on healthy foods. And for the first time in my adult life I don't feel like I'm on a "diet" and I don't feel like anyone is pushing products on me, like Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, etc. And it fits perfectly with my no white sugar or white flour commitment.
And I am exercising at least 5 days a week, I just recently found a dance studio that has Zumba classes, so I try to go twice a week, and on other days I either walk, hike or do a weight lifting dvd.
Starting weight 232 Current weight 165 Pounds Lost 67
Goal 125 Still to lose 40

I am definitely going to cut down on sugar, move to no sugar added foods. Carbs are going to be tougher, but I figure more lentils and beans, less rice, bread and pasta (even though I eat brown rice, brown bread, and brown pasta) is the way to go. Even if I'm not following the low-carb diet strictly, it still cuts down on huge amounts of carbs in my diet. In the interest of making this money-related, we will finish what we have first before buying anything new. And I will finish reading that book! bschoolbound, How about adding brown versions to what you have already (rice, pasta etc - 1/2 of each in a recipe) so you gradually add it in, but don't waste what you have ?

hmmm, so since Thursday, I've skipped working out (missed 5 workouts) and have eaten really, really crappy foods - chinese carryout, McDs breakfast, Arbys, Taco bell (yep, hit most fast food places during my 5hr drives), skipped breakfast most days, lasagna with bread and olive oil) and I didn't skimp at the dinner party before I left town where I had a few glasses of wine, desserts and a ton of asian bbq, gyoza, egg rolls.......and I'm down one pound from when I left. I'm so mad for not writing down what I ate when I was gone, I'm trying to remember but I'm getting some of my days confused and the days at the funeral home are hard to remember since it was food here and there. I really need to get a good estimate of my caloric intake and my burn (that's easy, zero) because the only thing that makes sense is that regularly, I'm not eating enough. I can't accurately express how pissed I'll be if that's really the case! Two of my docs assured me that I'm eating enough to not be in "starvation" mode, even with regular exercise. Munjoyhill - fantastic weight loss!!!

chicg - I feel your frustration. I seemed to lose weight like nothing when I drank sugary coffee drinks and ate giant muffins everyday. Now that I don't consume any of that and mostly whole foods, I lose nothing (and sometimes gain). BOO!! I say.

Boo is right RR234! I'm going to hop on sparkpeople again and try to track. I had to write down my days in a list then try to fill in the blanks, I got some days messed up on sparkpeople so time to go try to fix all that. Hope your spirits are a little up from last week. I was an emotional mess all weekend with the funeral, my dad and now my cousin is pretty sick (really, not all my family is sick, I just have huge extended family and they're all getting older) but getting back to the gym today really helped me forget about some of that. NOt sure if it's denial or just healthy distraction from getting too wrapped up in my thoughts but the exercise helped my mood a lot (ha, I'll probably show a gain on the scale tomorrow though!)

I was at 190.4 today but tomorrow is for the marbles...
I try to stick to whole wheat pasta and brown rice- but I am bad about sugar in my coffee- I can drink it with splenda and sugar free coffeemate or milk- but it has to have something in it. I do better than I used to though- when I first graduated high school (and I weighed 98 pounds) I put 5-6 sugars in 1 cup of coffee- plus milk- now it usually gets 1 tsp plus coffeemate- unless its reheated (2tsp plus coffeemate) or my travel cups- amount of sugar varies by how many cups of coffee fit. Splenda is so expensive I might give up coffee and go back to drinking tea- I can do that au natural.

I weighed my self this morning. 185.5. Up 1.5 lbs from Monday. It's not completely unexpected because I ate a lot of sugary/carpy foods and didn't drink enough water this week. But I'm up to 1 mile/20 minutes on the treadmill. DH is proud that I've managed to haul my @ss out of bed consistently so far.
Way to go munjoy! That's really impressive.
chicg, the foods you listed are making me hungry! lol. I hope you figure out what's going on.
edited to fix my weight. I WISH I was at 165.5...

I've been busy the last week and am 2-3 pages behind on my reading, but I wanted to share that I'm down to 191.8. That's a little skewed - last week I weighed myself at home in the morning, and last night I weighed in at the WW meeting at 5pm. But its still down, so I'll take it!

So I wasn't too happy that I when I weighed myself at 162 lbs this morning. I think I need to get a digital scale sometime in the near fture as I have caugh DS playing with the knob on the current one we have more than once. At 5:30 in the morning it is really hard for me to figure out if he did it again. He had me really excited a few weeks back when I weighed myself and was at 155lbs only discover soon after that he had turned the knob so it was 6 lbs before the 0.

I am in the frustrated club as well. It does seem the harder I try, the harder it is to lose the weight. I'm hoping it's just a plateau; I've been gaining a losing the same 1-2 pounds for the past 2-3 weeks. I'm back to tracking on fitday.com and sticking to my morning workouts. I'm hoping the Zumba will some variety...maybe my body is just bored of the usual workouts.

Well, so far I am proud of myself this week.
Saturday night, I swam for about a half an hour. It was really tough since I haven't done laps in about a year.
Monday I had my first session with personal trainer. We spent time measuring and getting to know each other/my goals. Then spent about 45 minutes on resistance training/weights. I really like that the next day/yesterday my muscles felt like they had been worked, but I wasn't crazy sore.
I felt so good that last night, I stopped at the gym on my way home from rehearsal at 9pm and put in a half hour on the treadmill. Today will be an off day for me.
As of this morning, the scale has started a downward trend, but I don't get excited until it stays down for a week. My weight can fluctuate a few pounds over the course of a few days without any actual loss.
Figured out that the stationery bike is probably not a good cardio for me. The resistance level I need to get to my target heart rate puts too much strain on my knees. I will have to start trying the elliptical to find another cardio source.

Update- 153.8 Not down much, but it's moving in the right direction. I have been alternating between yoga and a butts and guts dvd. I've cut way back on soda, but I'm finding that I'm hardly drinking anything at all. I'm not really thirsty, but it worrys me, i know its not healthy. Any suggestions on how to drink more?

I weighed in this morning at 208.5 ish.. that's 1.5 lbs since the thread was started.
I started counting my calories, I found an "app" for it. I also get lunch breaks this week and have been walking 1 mile each day. I decided that I am going to join weight watchers and see what that will do for me. My sister is going to be my buddy so we will make each other go!!

mpd402 Butts & guts makes me lol. so true though If you really want to make yourself drink more...set an alarm on your cell to beep every 2 hours and get up and slug a bottle of water. It's easy and guaranteed you won't forget. I often wonder if I drink too much. mom2-4monkeys What is the app for calorie counting that you are using? chicg That seems so odd??? Maybe it's because of all the fast food you've eaten, it's very high in sodium, could it be that you are dehydrating yourself and it's showing on the scale as a loss? I know if I drink bloody mary's at night I lose a few pounds. lol That's my promo!!! ;D I'm going to the gym with DH later this evening, I'll weigh in then and I'll have to post it tomorrow morning. Does anyone know of a great calorie tracker app for the droid market???

I find that if I keep a big glass of water at my desk, I drink it without realizing it, until it's empty. In fact, I'm just going off to refill my cup. I just measured and it holds between 20-24oz (depending on how high I fill it) Is this feasible at your job? Weekends and nights are where I need water help.

I am right there with you on this one. If I do not drink my 8 glasses of water before I leave work it is almost guaranteed that I will not drink when I get home. Weekends I am lucky if I drink 2 glasses all weekend.

WEIGH IN- 190.4! I want to be under 190 by the end of the month. Everyone is getting on track with eating healthier here in my world because they have no choice. My DGM and DM have been told they have to by the doctors; my ex-SIL is tring to lose weight because she is facing surgery and has picked up quite a bit over the past 12 years. And she is trying to cook more healthy meals for my nieces because one is picking up weight like ex-SIL and DB and the other one is like I was at 9/10 years old and can't seem to keep weight on.
beth- I try to keep a glass or bottle here at home as well. As long as the brita pitcher is full, I drink. Or I keep hot water in the coffee maker for tea. I have a huge stash of tea bags.

I bought a 20 oz tumbler from Target that is insulated, has a screw on top and a heavy duty straw and it was the best $12 I've ever spent. I've seen them cheaper at other places but that is where I was so I just grabbed it. I fill it up with ice water before I leave home and it sits on my desk during the day. I can take it with me wherever I go to lunch and most places let me fill it up with ice water for free or something minimal like .25 cents. It is awesome because it doesn't drip all over my desk as the day goes on and it stays cold all day!

I'm spoiled at work. We have a hot water spigot on the coffee machine and I make a lot of tea. I think I need to start looking at herbal teas again. They gave me horrible heartburn during my pregnancies so I got out of the habit of drinking them. I do decaf most afternoons but still add a bit of sugar and a splash of milk to it. Herbal I'll drink plain.

I also have a water bottle at work that I refill a few times per day. I don't really like to drink plain water, but I am one of those that will drink whatever is next to me. Makes me pretty fun at parties. I just object to the fact that almost every trip to the water fountain for a refill requires a stop at the ladies room.

It has brand name food, restaurant food, a bar code scanner, weight journal, exercise journal and some more stuff that I haven't played with yet. So far I like it.

txs- Have you tried adding lemon juice? Some people like those crystal light, etc things that you can put in your drinks, but I can't afford them; have found that some of them have hidden sodium; and try to stay away from the artificial sweeteners. I have found if I run the water through a filter or at least the coffee maker, I can drink it.

It would be really expensive to do it at work, since I drink 2-4 quarts a day. Honestly, half of the time I don't pay attention to how much I am drinking. I just look down and wonder who emptied my bottle. What I really struggle with is ordering water in a restaurant. Unless it is Indian food, that just seems wrong.

I drink hot tea or unsweetened ice tea at most places now unless I know that splenda is unavailable for the iced tea or the water is incredibly nasty. Or I will alternate between soda and water. I try not to drink coffee at restaurants because it is almost never as fresh as what I make at home and requires 3 times the sugar and milk.
