My friend asked me to join weight watcher with her... Has anyone else done WW's? Is it worth the money? I would get upto $150 back from my health insurance to pay for it (for a little while). I've never tried WW. I'm really liking their frozen lunches lately. My boss lost about 30 lbs on WW and has mostly kept it off for the last 2 years. She'd put about 10 back on and was going to restart going to the meetings but had an injury so I'm not sure what she's doing right now. At my work's wellness evaluation at the end of March, I was told that losing weight is about 80% food choices and 20% exercise. I've started the exercise because other than chasing my kids, I have a very sedentary life right now. Next up is making better food choices and smaller portions. I'm trying to stick with not buying stuff too. But I allow myself 1 treat per weekly grocery run. Unfortunately, we've got more Easter candy than I wanted in the house.

Oh and chicg is right, don't worry about rambling. Let it out. And doing it here means you're not going to have to worry about meeting most of us in real life. lol.

I did WW 6 or 7 years ago. I did really well on it, lost somewhere between 15-20 pounds and earned my lifetime membership, but, I have put it all back on over the years. I would go back, and have thought about it, except I moved 3 years ago and there are no longer any meetings near me, so, I've decided it's not for me at this time. But, I know a lot of people who have done really well on it and I do think it's worth the money. Again, they teach an entire lifestyle change, not a "diet".

RR234 - I missed your post earlier, I'm so sorry you're having issues with being bummed about the ex. That's so hard to get over and deal with. I still have residual baggage issues with mine and that was like 4 years ago.
WW - I really liked it and lost weight consistently, about 30 lbs in the first 3 months. Then my dad got sick and I was able to maintain during crazy hospital and travel schedules, but once I finally got back into a regular routine, I couldn't get back to losing. I stuck with it for the remainer of the year and finally dropped it as I wasn't losing and it was a lot of money not to lose. I definitely recommend going to the meetings if you can. I thought they woudn't help me and I already knew it all and I could find the same info for free online, but the accountability and commaradie was motivating. If you're new to dieting, you'll learn great food tips and how to manage eating well with a busy schedule. I actually miss the meetings! I tried their new program online but actually gained some weight. Nothing is working for me right now though I wouldn't judge their new plan based on that. If insurance will reimburse (wish mine would!), I think it's worth a try.

Oddly, when I lost 30lbs in 3 months on WW, I wasn't exercising much WTF? chicg - since you weren't exercising, you probably lost a lot of muscle, which weighs more than fat. I wish I had some magic answer to help you. It makes me scratch my head. Maybe you could find a gym that has one of those bod pod things that measures your body fat %. I'm guessing yours has got to be low with all the exercising. Maybe you've gained a ton of muscle and that's what jacks up your weight? Hang in there! And thanks for the words of support.

But isn't muscle supposed to burn more calories than fat, even at rest?

Despite being overweight now because of the meds issue, when I was in high school, I developed an eating disorder while running. We had a couple of hi-level runners transfer in and the older one told me I would never be a good runner because I was too fat. Taught me how to starve myself and how to purge. I went into the hospital for a different medical problem weighing 55 pounds. My track coach kicked her off the team for promoting eating disorders-since her parents wouldn't do anything about her- and suspended me until my weight came back up. Calorie counting gets to be a nightmare somedays because if I am running a 5K or doing certain training I need more calories than if I am doing other things. I did find out I can still make a good 200m about 3am today when some loser pulled the fire alarm in our building as a prank. He might learn to wear his pants up where they belong now. ;D
Question: What is one food you can't go without? Favorite healthy food? Goal outfit, activity or weight?
Food- Hot chocolate, coffee, or tea Brussels sprouts (roasted), mushrooms jeans from school that I was still wearing when I put this weight on; beat best 5K time from school, 115-125

does muscle "weigh" more or is it denser? I don't use crisco or lard, but Ihave always wondered if I put a tbs of hamburger and a tbs of crisco on food scale if they will weigh the same...

I should clarify, I exercised a little when on WW, maybe 1-2x week at the gym, walking dogs, etc but not consistent workouts like I do now.
Yes, muscle burns more calories then fat but *I think* that's more of a factor when you're exercising. Your muscle tissue will continue to help burn calories when you're done (afterburn) while fat cells won't. But it's not like if you're just sitting on the couch all day, your muscles are burning off calories, you need to work them. I am pretty muscular so eventually I think my goal weight might be a little higher then I envision because of it, but I have a lot of belly fat to lose so right now, I'm not all muscle yet!

They weigh the same. A pound is a pound. But muscle is denser than fat. So two people can each be 200 pounds. If one has a very high fat content, that person will look bigger than someone who is 200 pounds of lean muscle.

It takes less hamburger to reach one pound than crisco because of density. Yes, a pound is a pound but density is a key factor in determining weight... so a tbs of hamburger and a tbs of crisco would not weigh the same.

*sigh* Exercie fail today. Even with having to walk into the bathroom to shut off my alarm, I managed to stand their for a minute to reset the time and walk back to bed. Don't feel rested with the extra 40 minutes of sleep, combined with guilt. I rationalized it by saying it's only a yoga day...still could have burned 200 calories. New day tomorrow.
RR sorry to hear about the stress...ever look into Tae-bo or kickboxing...might be able to channel the anger.

mandy's got a good point RR. One of the things I loved about playing v-ball was the chance to work off a need to do violence and to channel my anger and frustrations. I gave no ground the guys who played either. If I called it, I went for it. If I was the setter, the 2nd hit was MINE unless I called for help. I blew out a LOT of emotions/aggression playing v-ball in my late 20s-early 30s!
I probably need to start back up just for that, actually. I'll have to check the rec book.
Bummer mandy. Maybe you need a more obnoxious sounding alarm?

Yay Losers, I found you!!!! I am IN! 5'5" (and 3/4 ) Last weigh in was 180 two weeks ago at the GYM which I just joined with DH. Sadly, I weigh 2 pounds less than DH...ughhhh. This is the most I've ever weighed & I'm determined to lose it! I, like most of you, do NOT have the time to go to the gym, but I am paying for it now and have DH riding me to go, as well. Seems we always get the urge to go on different days so one of us is always whining to get the other to go. Good system eh? Anywho...I am turning the BIG 4-0 in August, my b-day plan this year is Vegas and I would like to be 148. The one time free trainer says it's do-able with lots of hard work. I have issues with going out to eat that I am trying to work at. I also have a VERY sedentary job, I mean seriously, if I get up two-three times in a day to go to the bathroom and grab my lunch out of the fridge, I'm lucky. I joined a gym that has several different franchises open in different towns and there happens to be one right down the road from my work, so.....I'm trying to make a plan. DH & I went lastnight and I got on the elliptical for 25 min after the treadmill for 10 min. never have I been able to do the elliptical for more than two min so this is huge for me. I have my gym clothes with me and am going to try and sneak out of work in 45 min to get a workout in before I go home. I quit smoking in Nov 2009 and put on about 18 pounds over the course of the last year. I sometimes think if I would just start again, I know I would lose about 12 easily, but the thought repulses me and I'd like to be around for my lil 8 year old punkin. Short term goal: Maintain 170 by the last day of April. Maintain 162 by the end of May. Be at least 154 by the end of June. I need need need to focus more on cooking at home and not giving in to the "quick fix" dinners out during the week and mostly on the weekends. I also need to focus on the fact that alcohol has a HUGE effect on my body, depression, tiredness, moodiness, feelings of being lonely, bad decision making the next two days like going out to eat for comfort, and just plain old major fatness for me!!! I really need to try and stay away from it or find at least something I can have that doesn't do this to me. Food I can't go without - Any kind of meat Favorite Healthy Food - Romaine lettuce salad with veggies, mmmmm Goal Activity or Weight - see above. I'd also just like to feel sexy again and fit into clothes with ease.

Hello ladies! Count me in, too! Measuring 5'9'' and weighing in at 215 lbs, BMI 31.5, age 29. My heaviest was 265 two years ago. I lost about 60lbs through a diet change (went gluten free for other reasons, found out quickly that was why I was gaining weight and unable to lose). I have gained about 10 of that back over the winter.
My goal weight is 170, which is about what I weighed in high school.
So, figured out that I get a sweet discount at Gold's through work. I then totally lost my mind and signed up for a few sessions with a personal trainer. It is expensive, but I need someone to put me on the right track. I also figure that it will help keep me motivated. My first session is after work today, so wish me luck!

ezlivin - You got off easy - I gained 30 pounds in 3 months when I quit smoking!!! But I've taken 25 of that back off in 5 months, so I say to you: It IS possible without smoking. It's not always easy, but it is easier than you think and 100% doable!

Maybe you need a more obnoxious sounding alarm? lol...I doubt it. I think the more annoying, the worse it is to wake up to. I wish I could wake up to a live string quartet like in "Coming to America." I LOVED volleyball in high school...I think I gained a lot of muscle and luckily might have developed "muscle memory." Wish I could look into it...feel bad as it is taking any time away from DD since she's in daycare all day. We could make an awesome team, Beth; I was a left side hitter. So for the questions Food I cannot live without (but has surprisingly gotten easier to not gorge on): CHEESE!!!!! and pepperoni Favorite healthy food: artichokes...haven't been able to find them or they are expensive. I used to live near a Marcs that would have 16 oz cans for $1!! I could just eat them straight Favorite clothes: A good pair of boot cut jeans...I think I'll set up a shopping spree goal for my "extra check" in September. Hopefully I'll need new clothes by then!

We have volleyball through one of the local churches here once a week, I am thinking about starting to go play again once I have dropped a few more pounds, but don't want to risk a 4th broken ankle- I have broken my R ankle 3 times since I turned 21- all traumatic work/sports related breaks. mandy- Maybe you need one of those CD/clock radios like I have- you can put in a CD of relaxation music and wake up to a string quartet. My mother used to threaten to have flashing lights and alarms installed in my room a la fire department- until I got into high school- suddenly there were boys that didn't act like dorks at the bus stop (and no little brother tagging along) and I was more than willing to get up on time. I now wake up to whatever is in the CD player- unfortunately this morning, that was Def Leppard... I hope my weight doesn't become a problem this weekend- I will be climbing on a roof. Unfortunately, unless by some miracle my cousin shows up ( ) I weigh less and am shorter by about a foot than all the men who will be there- they are all about 6'4" and 200 or so- except maybe my one cousin he might be in the 180s. I would much rather be up on that roof at 115 than right now, but it has to be done. I also hope that the wasps or hornets or whatever they were that attacked my not-so-darling-father years ago when he reshingled the roof, don't live there anymore.

My trainer rescheduled at the last minute until tomorrow..so my dreaded weigh-in has been given a 24 hour reprieve.

HappyCat- Unfortunately, my trainer lives in my DVD player, I can't say that... I am hoping by the end of the weekend- as long as I don't fall through or off the garage roof at my DGMs- to have reclaimed my entire workout space and have menus planned for the rest of the month.

HappyCat, I was thinking about your Coca-cola/sweet tea habit last night, and something occurred to me. I remember that this was also an issue for you way back when I was on the first weight loss thread in 2008! (I'm sorry if the thoughts below have already occurred to you/everyone else, and in that case please ignore!) I realized that your Coke/sweet tea habit isn't just a habit, it's an actual addiction! Caffiene, obviously, addicting, and you've even build rituals around them if I remember, like getting a coke with ice to relieve the stress on your drive home. Have you tried treating this like an addiction you want to quit? I recently kicked the cigarette and then diet coke addictions, and while I definitely can't have just one cigarette I am totally at the point where I can have just one diet coke without going back to drinking 3 per day. Thoughts?

BSB: It is an addiction! But, it is also the fact that I am lazy and spoiled and undisciplined. I don't have very many vices. I've never had a cup of coffee in my entire life, never smoked a cigarette, never done any kind of drugs, etc. So coke/sweet tea is my vice. Today is day three with no coke and no sweet tea and I'm totally fine. I CAN go without I just don't like to. I'm working on it though. I am trying to limit myself instead of totally denying myself. I like this guy. I want him to be my "no coke/sweet tea" reward.

I've started drinking lemon juice with water (and sometimes cayenne) to kickstart my digestion. And miso soup with wakame so the iodine can wake up my thyroid. I have learned that swimming is a great way to get an all-over workout, and there's a public pool a few blocks from where I volunteer. I will call my physician to arrange a hormone test to see if the weight gain is connected to the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal chaos going on, and supplement correctly.
Food I can't go without - Chicken. Favorite Healthy Food - Carrots. Goal Activity or Weight - Goal weight is 143 lbs, although I wouldn't mind getting to 138.

Jillian Michaels 30 Day shred...a butt kicker. that woman loves some squats; I have been doing it only once a week on Firday's b/c I'm so sore for the rest of the weekend. But I can feel some definition in my arms (although can see it). I think I'm going to order Zumba this weekend; looks like fun and I need to add more variety. *edit* Just remembered another good website for low cal cooking. Hungry-girl.com...looking it over and think I will have to try to Philly cheesesteak burger soon!

I snuck out of work early and made it over to the gym yesterday....that eliptical is sure my good buddy now....NOT! Its one of those things I love to hate. This cardio stuff sure gives me a grrreat feeling, I can't believe it's so hard to get myself to do something that makes me feel so good! So, I had chicken breast out but DH & I didn't get home til 9:00 lastnight, hungry! I knew we would be gone all weekend so I cooked 'er up with some green peppers and onions...OUILA! Fajitas (at 9 PM at night, but healthy ). I'm going on a roadtrip for 2 hours tonight after work with DH to go watch a Blues band in WI. Then tomorrow I have a big corporate function....busy busy busy weekend (with a weekend babysitter- hasn't happened in about a year!!!) I'm hoping to go to the gym again at some point today, I'm up to 10 min on the treadmill to get my heartrate up, then I move to the eliptical for 25 min.

The capsaicin in cayenne promotes circulation, improves flows of blood and stomach secretions.
Lemons increase saliva flow, stimulate liver function and alkalize the blood.
