Here's my advice for those that hate to work out. Find something you love to do. A little over a year ago I was dreading going to the gym - weights, elliptical, stairmaster - I was so bored with my routine, I found every excuse not to go. I was also bummed because I felt I wasn't having FUN anymore. I'm getting older and not going out socially as much (well past the bar-hopping and out-all-night-dancing age), I missed dancing though. That's when I decided to give zumba classes another try, try to get some fun dance in with the music. I didn't like the first class I tried but the 2nd instructor was magic! Her classes are hard but so fun, it made me love exercise again and I found myself adding more classes to my routine since I WANTED to work out. Anyhow, that was my long-winded way of trying to explain that I hated exercise, hated sweating, would rather sit on the couch, etc. Once I found something I liked, it all clicked. Now I actually crave activity and breaking a sweat and hate sitting around for too long (now if only the weight would come off!).
Food-wise - 3 days of tracking, so far, so good. Made a great dinner last night from that website I posted, I can't wait to eat leftovers tonight. I'm trying to stick to a little lower carb and the scale is agreeing at the moment, hopefully I don't slip up. One day at a time.

chicg, are you tracking calories? If you are tracking calories (and eating reasonable amounts) and exercising, the weight should absolutely be coming off. If it's not, you may want to see a doctor and get all your levels checked...

Two week personal challenge! Alright, I am on austerity measures for the next two weeks! We go to Mexico on the 24th, and until then I am going to exercise 30 min every day, start 10 minutes of weights/resistance every day, and behave myself foodwise. Mexico will be the all-eating, all-drinking, all-fun reward at the end of my gazelle tunnel!!!

I used to play volleyball 2 nights a week. I really miss it. But with toddlers, I can't go back to it yet, the times just don't work for a family with little ones. It was a great workout too, esp. when we played 4 on 4 instead of 6 on 6.

Bschool - I've seen doctors and had basic levels checked, everything is fine. My PCP and gyne are at a loss, I'm at the point where I'm having trouble finding a weight loss specialist that isn't a surgical center. I've explored that option too but I don't quite have enough to lose. We're having trouble determining what a "reasonable amount" is for me, I think there's a hormonal imbalance somewhere because the online calculators and recommended amounts on Sparkpeople just aren't producing results. I did get a dr recommendation from a friend, I need to check in with her to see how her visit went, then maybe I'll see if I can get an appt. I do need to get more consistent about tracking though, which is my main goal for the next few weeks.

I am pretending that this huge glass of ice water on my desk is vodka! Ugh.... I made it through 30 minutes of my spinning class last night. It sure is going to be a battle back to the top!

I want to see if this will help me get motivated.
I’m Mary, 5’8”, and weigh 160ish lbs.
My long term goal is to weigh 140 lbs.
Short term goal: get down to 150 by end of July.
I fall into the category of not getting enough exercise. Main part of this is time constraints. I am up at 4:45 am to be out of the house by 6:00 so I am in work by 7 - 7:30. I get home around 5 - 5:30 each night.
Normal routine is to do some housework and make dinner for when DH and DS get home around 6. We do normally go for a walk after dinner once the weather gets nice (I am in MA) but then we have to start the bedtime routine around 7 - 7:30 so there is not much time for anything else. I eat fairly healthy but I too find the weekends are my issued. I either eat things that I shouldn't be or I tend to skip meals, which I know is not good. I am debating on going back to having Slim Fast shakes and a Piece of fruit for breakfast as that seemed to help when I lost about 10 lbs prior to getting married (about 2 1/2 years ago). I am up for any and all suggestions.

Well, I'm a complete cow compared to some of you, but I'm game. Rene, 5'5", just stepped on the scale and it said 294. And I'm 27. Highest weight ever: 311 Lowest weight as an adult: 274 Short term goal: 29 lbs which equals about 10% of my current weight which would put me at 265. Immediate goal: 10 lbs by 5/12/11, don't bring any "junk" food into the house, Move On Purpose (MOP) every day... that means that all the walking I do at work or doing housework doesn't count. I need to do something where my focus is to move my body and work towards being more fit. Oh, and I need to begin building a better body image. See comment above. Long Term Goal: 180 (114 lbs lost) Plan for today/this week: Get settled (just moved into my apartment), cook ahead for the week while dancing along to the radio (MOP), sew like a mad woman (costumes for a production due in about a week, need an outfit for an interview on Thursday). Another good resource website (free) is fatsecret dot com. Food and exercise tracking, community, challenges, journals, weight tracking, and a recipe feature that figures the calories per serving for you. LOVE it.

reneejune - karma for you for bringing up so many good topics! Body image is something I struggle with too, I know people still judge overweight people and think we're all lazy...that's not true and it bothers me so much. I LOVE your MOP abbreviation, might have to borrow that. I share the same theory, I don't count commuting to work or daily chores as exercise. The activity is nice but when you're trying to lose weight, that's not going to produce a big enough burn to really make a dent. Anyhow, congrats on being 17lbs down from your highest weight, keep that momentum going.
A lot of you guys are already at my goal weight! I don't really have any advice to give except if you really want to lose weight, you have to change up your food and/or exercise. I don't have kids to schedule and that's everyone's biggest obstacle (taking care of everyone but themselves) but my friends that exercise a lot with little ones, they tell DH he has to take the kids a few times a week while mom goes to yoga or on a run, and that's that. It might not be easy to implement at first but once it's treated as part of the schedule, my friends seem to have success. Not to mention a few cherished hours of alone time each week.

I agree with that this is very hard to implement. If I did this I would see even less of DS than I already do (I am lucky to get 2 hrs a weekday with him while we are both awake). I would have no problem if it meant I could go to the gym after bedtime but since I do not live in the city the only thing I have nearby is the local Y and I have toyed with getting a memership but they do not have classes that I would be able to attend (I do much better with group settings than by myself) and they are only open until 9:00 so by the time bedtime is set I would have less than an hour to get there and work out and for it to be worth the money I need to be there at least an hour at a time. I do have Wii Fit, EA Active, and two of the Dance games so maybe I just need to convince Hubby that I need to go back to doing at least one of these a few nights a week once DS is gone.

"It is hard to implement. And I feel guilty when I'm not around for their bedtimes."
Oh, I know, nothing about losing weight (or having kids) is easy. I got de-railed when I got a boyfriend, so saying no is an issue for me too, I can only imagine how hard it is to tear yourself away from children. Just saying that if you NEED to lose, there's usually a way to find time (I don't mean 10 hours a week, but a half hour here and there), it just depends what else is competing for that time and what you prioritize. Think of it like a budget....if you want to keep something, you look at giving up something else. Say you'd like to keep bedtime, can you give up one bath-time (DH would do)? If you do family walks with the kids, maybe swap walks for a playground instead and take a jump rope and resistence band for you? Or like poobiscit suggested, if there is no time to make it to a gym, get a gaming system or video. This can work with food too, think of keeping bedtime over carryout pizza and make a lowfat pasta and salad instead.
I don't mean to sound like any of these changes are easy, especially with kids and families, the options are there though if weight loss really needs to happen. Maybe it's not worth 10 lbs and fitting into skinny jeans but if you have medical risks or have a significant amount to lose, priorities shift.

ooohh! i was posting in the wrong thread. I'm in too.
last year I got really into getting back into shape, did some 5ks, didn't lose a ton of weight but got in much better shape and lost lots of inches. I got S.A.D. over the winter and lost my will to do everything. gained about 20 pounds and lost all my energy and endurance. I just had to go buy new clothes this weekend (in a bigger size) because nothing fit and i was getting even MORE Miserable! I'm ready to get back in shape and fit in my old clothes again, and hopefully in something smaller as well!

I was unable to say no to a small pumpkin bar this morning, but like a good girl I wrote it down. I'll be stronger tomorrow, I promise! And more water, I need to drink more water...

Hi all,
Day number 2 in a row with the crack of dawn exercise...it cheered me up that someone at work noticed I have been losing weight (about 10 pounds so far these past 4 months).
Another website I love is fitday.com to track intake and exercise. I find that the "recommended calories" are really off. I told me I need 2200 calories per day...the calculation I use at work says 1700, so I try to stick with that.
If anyone has questions for me, I'd be more than happy to field them. I hate giving unwarranted advise, so I haven't thrown anything out there.

I want in too! I weigh in at 193.6 now and the doctor just said my height is 5'3.5" (I somehow have had a growth spurt.) I turn 35 this year. I weighed between 115 and 120 before I put this weight on due to a medication problem but now don't know what a good weight is because I gained major bust size. I went from a B-C to a DD-F and gained about 12 inches there alone. I have gone from a 16 to a 10 in jean sizes. I used to be a runner in school. I enjoy walking. I am really frustrated because I had gotten down to 169.9 but then gained it all back. I have to lose this weight, I was never large and refuse to believe my family's, well you have to deal with it mantra.

I'd like to be a loser, too! I'm Carole, I'm 5' 6" and current weight is 151. Short term goal - under 140. Long term goal - 130-135. My current weight is leftover baby weight from DD2 who is almost 2 now. Much of it seems to be hard to lose belly fat - yuck! I have two pairs of jeans and two pairs of shorts that fit and that's all. I don't want to buy new clothes in this size (and admit that I'm not going to lose weight) when I have plenty of jeans/shorts in smaller sizes. I just want my clothes to fit again! I'm not sure what my plan of attack is yet. I've tried calorie-counting, but right now I'm doing 18-20 hour days and I get so hungry at 10PM because it's been hours since dinner. Also, I've noticed that when I'm tired like this I'm more likely to get hungry and not be able to control it, or care. Unfortunately, with two little ones, a DH that is traveling two weeks at a time and company coming for next two weeks I'm maxed out for time to exercise (hence the long days). I may have to wait until May to try to get in any new exercise beyond chasing the kiddos around. I need to figure something out, because I'm turning 40 later this year and darn it, I want to look GOOD!

Today I was not the best Cat I could have been. I drank two huge glasses of water during the day. I met Mr. Cat for lunch and we shared a quesadilla. I had a coke at lunch and took a refill back to the office. I was on my own for dinner and I had a turkey melt and TWO huge glasses of sweet tea (McAlisters anyone??). So the two cokes and two ginormous teas did the day in. The turkey melt wasn't the best but so yummy. I came home and studied for two hours then headed down to the basement. I swept the basement and then did 1 hour on Wii Fit (burned the piece of chicken...280 calories). So, yeah, not the best. I KNOW cokes and teas are my downfall. Tomorrow I vow to only have water and UNsweet tea for drinks. My after workout treat, while I study some more, is low fat yogurt and granola. Tomorrow after work is the spinning class and then Thursday at 5:00 I meet (read: weigh in) with my trainer. I will post my weight after my session with the trainer. I am hoping for -3 lbs but I know I haven't been perfect this week. We shall see.

Can anyone recommend a "good for weight loss" yogurt? I have Dannon Light & Fit but I just read the label and it says "fructose AND sucralose". That can NOT be good!

HappyCat,
Sucralose is splenda, fructose is fruit sugar. Depending on where they are listed in the ingredients list is how prevalent they are in the yogurt. I vaguely remember that the Dannon light is one of the commerical brands with the least amount of calories (60 or 80 for a 6 oz container); I think it would be a good choice. That's a really low calorie snack; plus the benefit of calcium. HTH

Whoops, sorry sarcasticgirl, I saw you posting on the other thread and assumed you saw this one, so I didn't mention it. No workout this morning. DS started making noises around 3:10am, at 4am I went in there and we snuggled until he fell asleep. Around 4:40am, I put him in his crib and as soon as he touched the mattress he started wailing. Bad mommy that I am, I let him wail. He fell back asleep about 5 minutes later which is when DH got up for the day. I'm supposed to get up at 5:30/5:40 to exercise but I opted for another 1/2 hour of sleep instead. I'm just beat and Wednesday are my long day anyway. I may try to treadmill later on today. I've got a dentist appt. at 9am (I broke a tooth on Monday night) and I'm not sure if I'm coming back to work or not. I may go home, take a nap and exercise. We'll see how things play out at work and at the dentist.

I can't help happycat, I stopped using all artificial sweeteners and light/lite foods when I got pregnant and was breastfeeding and I don't think I'm going back to them. DH is using stevia (got no clue on how to spell it) as it's permitted on his regime/diet plan. The kids (not quite 18 months and 3 years old) get whole milk plain Greek yogurt - and they love it. And they've had flavored and 'regular' yogurt. This is what they prefer. Go figure.

Am pleased, both Monday and yesterday were good days for me health-wise! As well as my 30 min/day cardio, am adding two goals for the week: track calories every day and 10 min of resistance training every day. Yesterday hit right on 1400 calories, which is my goal 6 days/week. I am finding the 30 min every day so much more manageable than big workouts a few times a week--hoping to keep this up long-term, even after I hit my goal weight! Scale this morning said 165.8--first time it's said below 166 since I started tracking. I try not to pay too much attention to the actual numbers as it can fluctuate so much day-to-day, but as long as I am on a downward trend I am happy! Happycat--Try coke zero instead of regular coke. Also, if you track calories and see how much that coke is actually costing you every time you pick it up that might help, I know it helped me make the switch to diet soda years ago! Just making the switch from regular soda to diet soda will help the normal person lose 10lbs over a year wihtout making any other changes! Re: yogurt, light and fit was the best diet yogurt I ever found in terms of calories. I have now switched to greek yogurt with honey because I enjoy it more, but it has more calories than light and fit.

how often you you weigh yourself? We didn't have a scale for a really long time (like 3+ years) and I got out of the habit of weighing myself at home.

We didn't have a scale either, but I found I was not being accountable to myself without it, so we bought one and I weigh every day. Like I said, if there is difference of even a few pounds day to day I don't freak out, but if I can look at a week and say "this week I was mostly around 166, but last week I was mostly around 167", then I know I am making progress!

I think I have been becoming too obsessed with weighing. I started out with once a week, but now have been weighing twice a week. I think I might start keeping track of measurements instead of relying on the number. It's too frustrating to look at the lack of progress on the scale; I know I have been losing inches.
