I see a lot of people driving, alone in their cars with masks on. Makes no sense to me. I can speak to this... you aren't suppose to put on and take off the mask. Maybe they are between "stops" that require the mask to be worn? For example: if I'm going to the bakery, the grocery store, the Walgeens: I drive without the mask until I get to the bakery - I put the mask on before leaving my car to go into the bakery. I leave the mask on when I get in the car and then drive to the grocery store. I leave the mask on after I've loaded my groceries and returned the cart and then drive from the grocery to the Walgreens. I remove the mask when finally back in my car and am heading home. (When I make grocery runs for friends - I put the mask on before going into the grocery and I leave it on until I'm done dropping the stuff off at assorted houses. It isn't until I'm on my way home that I remove the mask.) If you've only got one shop shopping with no other stops - then I can see taking the mask off in the car. TBH the masks I have aren't that uncomfortable. aDDED: I like to think that I am accessorizing with a mask. I spent some time making sure I had a mask that matches my outfit (white with blue polka dots if I'm wearing my blue sweatshirt) or mood (silly bunny nose, whiskers and buck teeth). I too am in the "STFU" if you (generic you) don't like it that I'm wearing a mask. If you (generic you) wouldn't comment on my clothes or hair or car or any other personal thing - then the mask is off limits too. This. I carry two clean masks in my car. When I’m out shopping, I try to get as much done as possible. So I’ll leave my mask on until I’m done. If I do remove it, I have a spare clean one for the next outting. Our county is mandating that all places of business require mask to be worn by both employees and customers

Ah, yes, I forgot that our medical and science knowledge/ability has advanced to the point that they know everything there is to know about a brand new disease withing months of it showing up. I mean, it was more than 30 years ago when it took years for them to figure out wtf was going on with AIDS - by now they have to have it all figured out in months right? /s
This is a brand new disease - of COURSE they don't know all the facts about it right now. It completely makes sense that they're getting information out to people as soon as it is a reasonable probability of being true because this disease is killing thousands of people and they want to mitigate that if they can - not wait for an entire scientific trial to wrap up.
As for the masks (hell the gloves too) the entire way they protect you is that you keep them on until you're able to fully disinfect yourself. (Though there's also a cross contamination issue.) I got a crazy look when I filled up my car today - I've taken to wearing a glove when I pump gas because even though Costco has employees disinfecting pumping stations between customers I feel like the pump is practically impossible to clean. I put a glove on one hand and use that hand for everything and then before I get in my car I use my other hand to pull the glove off from inside and use hand sanitizer once I get back in my car. I got a bit of a wtf look from the dude next to me when I pulled it off.
I'll admit I'm sometimes a bit lax a remove my mask between stops sometimes - though that's mostly because Florida humidity + asthma makes masks a bitch. But when I do take it off in my car I use hand sanitizer after and then again once I put it back on. Though lately I've been preferring just one stop when I'm out.

We have an aggressive mask wearing policy at work, and you have to get your temp taken and respond to six questions before you can get in. Plus they don't allow anyone to enter except essential workers (no visitors) I had a regulator come to visit and as we were standing outside on the sidewalk he kept walking closer to me, and I kept stepping backwards away from him - and finally I put up my hand like a stopping guard and said 'You stay right there and I'll stay here.' He was apologetic and kept his distance after that. In his defense he has six kids under the age of 12 and probably never has a moment at home where one of them isn't all up in his space.

It demonstrates the mixed messages we have all received since day one. There has been no consistency. People hear one thing from our so called leadership and something different from medical professionals. Even the medical professionals haven't been consistent. Don't wear a mask, but now wear a mask. This doesn't effect children, except now it does effect children. I couldn't watch much of it because it felt like exaggerated simplistic whining. In NJ and I think NY the message had always been that shelter in place was to slow the spread of the disease. Which is also why the number and kind of businesses permitted to be open existed. There has been conflicting or changing info, but not on that.

I am guessing that no one here remembers the early YEARS (NOT WEEKS) of AIDS. They were not sure of how it was transmitted, so the early thoughts were you could catch it through touch, in the garbage, from dishes, etc. In comparison, what the medical establishment has learned since Jan. about COVID is tremendous, and we are still learning.
So if you are upset about a mixed message, this is nothing new. As doctors and scientists figure things out, the public will get the message. But it is important to give them a freaking break! The best anyone can do is extrapolate with the information they have. This is a really good example of observing how the acquisition of knowledge in science works, you see something and go on what you see.....until you see something else that either adds to or contradicts previous observations. The whole field is a great big puzzle....but the puzzle pieces can change.

Last I heard they think there may be two strains of this current covid, one worse than the other. This reminds me of a mad man episode (set in the 60's) where a character had a heart attack and complained that he'd done everything his doctor said to do - ate a lot of butter and cream - and he still got a heart attack. And probably, his doctor was smoking when he told him that. That's the beauty of science - it's not a black and white thing, it's more like a giant ball of string that gets bigger as each piece of data is added to it, constantly changing.

A couple exchanges from the movie Sleeper: Now, please do not think that I actually get my science from early Woody Allen movies. On the other hand, that would still put me far ahead of most Republicans....

I know you know this, but when people say we(physicians) dont know anything and change our minds about things, it is insulting. If people actually would learn something about science, and the media would be responsible in their scientific reporting, that meme would not exist. The reason this exists is because people want quick fixes, and not follow what is well proven strategies for a long and healthy life. For a nickel I will share them with you😀

We are called killjoys, so I will admit some of the advice may be misconstrued as being anti-fun So Donnadub just called me and had talked with her brother. It’s his B’day this week and she wants them over plus sis and BF. We have just had 2 socially distant dinner parties with 1 couple and then 1 couple and a single. They remained down in the backyard, we had 6’+ distance and we did all the serving....washed hands and gloves. But the weather is not cooperating for next Saturday and all 5 of them have now spoken and feel it’s ok to sit at our dining room table. Donnadub is an oncology RN, her B is a surgeon, SIL is a public health pediatrician. The 6th person, namely me, is not feeling all that comfortable about this. A sunny day will come. She said what if the governor says it’s ok? My rebuttal was ‘I’m not known for taking any advice from the governor’ and even locked down 2 weeks before he said we should, and he was early. So what should I do. Think about it some more, cave to their groupthink, or kill the deal because I don’t feel comfortable. I have already had to allow their dog which is a no no for me.

Tough question, but we have to eventually do more and interact more. So baby steps. We are now allowed to have 10 people in our homes. Is it correct? Who the hell knows. But one way to get back to normal is to increase your “bubble” so you add more people to the circle of who you interact with, but only interact with that new group. I would be comfortable interacting with another small group who has been behaving themselves. But I know it isn’t easy to do. Life is inherently risky, and this is just adding to our anxiety. But we have to start somewhere with baby steps

But we have to start somewhere with baby steps We have all done decent individual bubbles. Our backyard is a great spot as we can prep plates on the deck and bring them down to our 8’ long table. We also have a fire pit with 2 glider benches and 4 chairs spread way out. Bigger fire, wider spread! 😎 I’m just not sure I’m ready for inside versus just waiting for a guaranteed sunny day. His b’day is one of those but they are not available. I’ll see what I think about this in a couple days. I have until Saturday. Thanks for your input.👨⚕️

DH's immediate family has continued gathering throughout this. It wasn't a battle I was winning. Only 2 were going into work. We have done a lot of outdoor stuff.
They've slowly begun opening stuff back up. I'm not in any rush to go eat out at a restaurant though just because you can eat outside. Carry out will be just fine for me.
I visited my mom earlier this month. She's a surgical nurse and did some filling in when they had a COVID unit at her hospital. I spent 30 minutes there. No hugs though.
My grandma's oncologist advised she could have a few friends over for lunch outside. Lots of hand washing and no hugs he said.

I’m breaking out of my bubble next week when my PT starts back up. I can really tell that I have backslid, which is annoying the shit out of me. I was feeling pretty good in Jan.
I have requested the first appointment of the day. I figure that minimizes my risks. I am sure that there are going to be hoops to jump through, but I’ll figure them out.
