As a "gig worker" I am eligible for the $600 per week UI extension deal. I applied in OR when it was approved by congress and a couple weeks ago was denied. They told me I had income in another state in 2018 and I had to apply in CA. I tried to apply in CA but the website would take only my name on the first page and then error that the site was overloaded. So, I gave up and never applied. Today I received a debit card from the CA UI office forwarded from my old address in CA. I almost tossed it. Instead, something told me to activate it and check the balance. Um, it has $9900.00 available on it. Guess they did an automatic issue for gig/1099 workers based on taxes? Why else would it have gone to my old address or why would I have gotten it since I didn't apply here? Weird, but that's a year's income for me so I'll take it.

You should log into the CA unemployment website and see if you need to file weekly reports to continue receiving the payments.
My state (different than CA, but likely similar policies) took a couple of months to develop a new automated system that could handle gig workers, and then mailed out payment cards with back payments to the gig workers that were initially denied for monetary ineligibility. To continue receiving payments, they have to file weekly reports online to declare that they are still unemployed/underemployed and would be available for work if it weren't for COVID.

I'm not sure how to log on since I never applied for benefits in CA at all. Since the debit card was sent to my old address and forwarded by the USPS, I'm kinda hoping some sort of letter will follow in the next day or two. All of the 25 or so transactions adding money to the account are dated a few days ago and are for weird amounts ranging from 263-1600 and there's no details to see where the weird amounts are coming from.

Gotta love state bureaucracies! Keep in mind that UI is typically taxable income- but enjoy the rest!

Be careful and don't spend it all. The system is riddled with mistakes. They could try to come back for it.

So, I'm not too worried about a claw back. I don't really plan to spend it but I have the cash in the bank to replace it if need be. I'd much rather the cash in the bank and the options that brings. If I did spend a large chunk of it, it would be on the shed/electrical work I want/need in order for this property to meet my needs. My current plan is to hold out until next spring and see how the economy goes. I will, however, be ordering the window films and curtains I had been putting off. I just started using the office and it has a black and red yarn-over-wood mini-blind thing from the 70s that is hideous.

DS and I just stare at the thing and say "WTF were they thinking?" I'm pretty sure that thing was never in style. It's bad. It even has a matching valance... lol

Wouldn't it be a good idea to contact California's UI system and ask why you got it? Is there any chance that someone else applied in your name? You didn't sell the house to the most lawful bunch of folks.

A PT Cruiser from Chrysler is the least reliable vehicle to purchase. Not cool and will drain your bank account.
