After living in the South for awhile, you definitely need to keep most fruits & veggies in the fridge. Unless, of course, you like going to the farmer's market every day. Being raised in the Midwest, I was amazed at how quickly fresh produce went bad. Not sure if it's the humidity, or what, but even bagged salad in the fridge didn't last more than 2 days tops in Florida, while in the Midwest it'd last for days. Cucumbers didn't do well outside the fridge either, unless you like a rubbery texture, or rot. I will agree that things like onions, garlic and pumpkins can be stored in a cool basement. But still, you need to check on them from time to time.

Here in Texas I keep onions, shallots, garlic, potatoes and tomatoes on the counter (but NOT NEAR EACH OTHER!). The onions, shallots and garlic last about 3 weeks, tomatoes one week, and potatoes maybe 2 except in summer when they last only 1 week. Acorn and butternut squash are good for a week on the counter during the winter months. Apples, oranges, cukes, zucchini, etc are only good in the fridge for a week at most. Lettuce is iffy beyond 3-5 days at best. This is what's making it hard for us right now; I go to the grocery once a week and most produce won't last more than 5-7 days in our heat and humidity. On the bright side, avocados and mangoes are good for 2 weeks in the fridge.

Also keep condiments in the frig and maple syrup maybe because don’t want to tempt any ants I’ve been keeping garlic and carrots in frig, not happy with how they keep. Will try keeping garlic in cabinet with onions. Will try carrots in cabinet when I buy next batch

They had a huge farm and vegetable garden, and the basement/cellar in their house had a dirt floor and concrete walls. Perfect place to store veggies. My one issue about storing fruit on a counter is that if you don't eat it quickly enough- fruit flies. And those buggers are so hard to get rid of!!

But still, you need to check on them from time to time. I had someone horrified that I didn't have a basement to store stuff and to go to during tornado warnings. I never did make them understand that I'm only about 8 feet above sea level!!
I went to Toledo, Ohio over Thanksgiving weekend to meet my father's family. I had a hard time when they would "bring stuff up from the basement" to cook. I got the impression that the dressing had been prepared and put there to keep cold till time to cook. I ate enough of it to be polite the whole time hoping I didn't get food poisoning
But that comes from being on Gulf Coast and I put just about everything in fridge except fresh tomatoes and they don't last long enough to go bad anyway.
