And ironically, many of the things in short supply are "back to the basics". Material to build stuff, canning jars, fabric, ice cream makers etc. yeast Still not in our local stores, even though we have just about everything else. My Audrey is voracious, so even though it takes her longer to get bread to rise, she does so beautifully. None here, either. I always keep a jar in my fridge. Amazon had 1 lb packages, so I got one of those to replenish.

Actually, our Lowe's has several horse drawn buggies parked outside at any given time. They're Amish. I don't know of a single Non-amish person who has opted to join them, but I know several who have left. They said it sucks. Walmart has a hitching post specifically for the Amish. And yes, you can buy some replacement parts for the buggies. Our trading posts have poles outside where you can hitch your dogsled team while you shop for whale blubber and blankets. Of course, the poles are attached to the wooden sidewalk.

I went looking for vinegar the other day, and bought the last bottle in the store.

My parents lived through some tough times, but they have never butchered a hog and wouldn't know how to make soap without further instructions. My kids and my parents would be equally uncomfortable with your list, and my parents aren't snowflakes. I am not sure my kids are either, but since we are channeling the old man who shakes his fist and yells "Get off my lawn you damn kids" it seems pointless to discuss the possibility that the younger generation is strong and hardworking. My husband did grow up on a farm. While he has milked plenty of cows, gathered eggs, hitched teams (but why would you do that when you have a tractor?), he would have no idea how to butcher a hog or make soap. He decided as a kid that farming sucks and he's now a pharmacist. We mostly used tractors - but we kept a team during the War cuz we couldn't always get fuel and tires for the tractors. (Your DH made a good choice, phar is much nicer than rendering lard, mixing lye, and cutting soap bars in a cake pan.)

A friend who was looking for a better camera for his computer a few weeks ago reported that they were hard to find on-line and grossly overpriced. He runs his own business and does a lot of teleconferencing with clients. I suspect that many people had to go out and buy newer, better electronics to support working from home.

I went looking for vinegar the other day, and bought the last bottle in the store. That doesn't seem to be an issue here. I was looking at my vinegars I have to see if I have enough to keep around some pickled veggies to munch on. There was both white and cider vinegar on the shelves.

My husband and my neighbor's husband also made a similar choice. Many who grew up on a farm ran as fast as they could away from it. It is REALLY hard work. DH's family farm was a dairy farm, and he started milking cows when he was 5 years old. However, phil5185 , he would sort of agree with you on the snowflake part. I used to tease him that he was never a kid because he wanted to stop Christmas stockings at age 6. Hey, by then you were doing a man's work. But I will say anything he planted grew . . . unlike anything I planted.

Zinc.....I did my every-2-week shopping for the expanded household and managed to get everything except zinc. I even got gramma one of the two brands of flour she'll use for bread (aaaaand she'll whack Phil for back-talking her about it). Everyone else is pretty relaxed and happy I can find/afford food. But I can't find zinc, which I am supposed to take per my M.D. I have a bit left but am getting nervous.

It's not my go-to for stuff like that, but if it's out at local stores, it's worth a shot.

Our Costco has been out of the Kirkland Brand dog biscuits for over a month. They don't even show up on the Canadian Costco website as available.
None of our substitution attempts have been agreeable to all of the dogs so I have a lot of partial bags of various treats kicking around the house.

Well, Sam's Club had MASSIVE amounts of TP. It was everywhere! LOL That and paper towels. I didn't check on antibacterial wipes or hand sanitizer. However, the ONE thing I went to get...hamburger patties for my party. Gone. So was all the chicken except for two 10 pound bags of Members Mark frozen breasts, so I grabbed one of those and made hawaiian chicken in my pressure cooker tonight. I'm becoming such a cook now!

And to join phil5185 in the land of apropos of nothing: My dad turned 90 today. He and his brother were raised from toddlers by their Maternal Grandparents, first on their farm and, after his uncle took over, in the small town nearby. Even after they moved to town, he was often called on to help on the farms of various relatives and that of his mom's 2nd husband. There was never much money and my dad and his brother were responsible for most of the household chores as his grandmother was blind. So there isn't much about living on a pre-electricity animal-powered farm or doing housework without electricity or modern appliances that my dad doesn't know how to do. One good thing about my dad is he has never felt the need to mock people for not having skills they've had no need to acquire. Partially that is out of gratitude to the people who taught him what he needed to know when he needed to know rather then mock him for not knowing. Partially it is out of respect for his grandfather who spoke 10 languages with varying degrees of fluency and never mocked anyone who could only speak and read the language they were born into.

Wow, these posts are quite a list of First World Problems.
What if today's Snowflakes had to get milk by milking a cow, gather eggs, butcher a hog for bacon and laundry soap, harness a team to drive to town for sugar & flour? Surely, you don't use modern plumbing and electricity. Such a snowflake.

Yup, I finally turned to Amazon for the zinc. I didn't want to because I only use the cheap generic stuff and Amazon's is pricey compared to that.

My mom spoke 8 languages. I'm a piker compared to her.

Wow, this thread took a turn! I was just looking for examples of things you were surprised to find were not available. And someone just pointed out that their smug self-satisfaction was fully stocked! No shortage there. :-) Grocery store only had some third-rate brand of TP yesterday. I'm much too bougie for that, so I'm just going to cut down my dogwood tree and make my own toilet paper.

Sunday morning I made a quick trip to Walmart for vitamins and a birthday card. Where they normally have the hand sanitizer the shelves had been rearranged and there wasn't even an empty shelf, there was NONE, anywhere.
I'm going to be at the Neighborhood Market shortly after the senior citizen shopping starts this morning. Last week it worked and I was able to grab a couple bottles of sanitizer, maybe I"ll be as lucky today.

Amazon charged me today for my quarterly shipment of toilet paper. Now to see if it actually ships.

I was not as lucky today. Was at the Neighborhood Market @ 6:30 AM. I was the only car parked in handicap parking and there were 2 people + me in the store. The sanitizer shelving was completely empty, but if you TP they got it!! A lot of the other food shelves were empty including frozen food. The only grapes were seeded one (yuk) and meat counters were full...I didn't need any.
I still managed to pick up some things I had missed the last time, but overall, i think the WMT brand could do a lot better keeping so shelves full, including sanitizes.

Still no flour here, in particular no King Arthur's all-purpose flour. I was reduced to buying some repackaged Whole Foods flour that they'd bagged from the stock they used for their own baking. I may just need to venture out early and see if I can nab some at old people's hour. But if I can't, then what? I've never seen such empty shelving for flour.

I've been doing Mom's shopping for her and haven't been able to find any Maximum Strength Pepcid. Well I did find one small box with 8 tablets on my third try. That with what she had left gives me two weeks to find more.

Famotidine is the drug name for Pepcid. Sam's Club has their generic brand and it comes two bottles to a package. Can't remember how many but it's more than eight.

When this all started I bought TP, Wipes, Generic Imodium and Pepto Bismol, and Tylenol and a Thermometer. I had trouble finding what I wanted and ended up with a regular thermometer and an ear thermometer. I returned the ear thermometer, and found the same thermometer cheaper at Walgreens, so returned the one I bought to Target. Despite looking all over for several weeks, I was unable to find any probe covers for the thermometer, and I had a difficult time finding alcohol. One one of my trips to Walgreens searching for Probe covers, I found two bottles of Alcohol on the shelf, so I bought one. I also managed to get some Tylenol Cold Max Medicine on that same trip b/c they had it on display at the checkout counter limit one package. After I returned the second thermometer, and with the difficulty finding probe covers, I decided every family member should have their own thermometer. DD was away at school, and working for an airline, so I told her to go buy one. I did not realize she had listened to me until we moved her out of her apartment last weekend and she showed it to me. I had been looking at Target and Walgreens regularly trying to buy another one, and like others have said, they just rearranged their shelves where they used to have them, and stocked other stuff there. Depending on the price, if I see one, I might grab a temporal type thermometer. Flour is something we have trouble finding. I watch for it, b/c MIL likes to make homemade flour Tortillas and we like eating them. I have two bags of flour in the basement for her when she is ready for them. I have seen some empty meat counters, but lately they have limits on how much you can buy, and there is stuff on the shelves. It is more expensive though. I have a regular order with Amazon for TP. It was delayed in April, and May, I think I managed to fix the order telling them to send it in Mid-June. I decided I did not need it yet, and if someone else really needed it, they should direct it their way. They no longer sell individual self serve bakery at the grocery store. I don't buy it, but DH mentioned it. It would be better if he just bought one or two doughnuts at a time, but whatever. Clorox Wipes, I have always used them, but I am not obsessively trying to find them. I don't like that they leave behind lint, so I think to a certain extent other cleaning products and Paper Towels are a better combination. I have plenty of other disinfectant cleaning products. I had trouble finding Lysol type spray disinfectant. I did find some a few weeks ago. Like others said on the thread we had a week or so ago, My obsessive cleaning has kind of burned out. I clean, but I probably should be more diligent about it. The BIL of my Husband's Para Professional/office Assistant recently had Covid-19. He said he has never been so sick, and he thought he would die. He lost a lot of weight, had issues keeping food down. DH said his family was giving him lots of tea with garlic in it. Apparently Garlic is good for the heart and reduces blood pressure, but it can cause nausea...so I don't know if his issues were from the Covid-19 or the Garlic. Anyways, his being so sick is a reminder of why we want to avoid getting sick in the first place. It is not just like the flu. it is much worse. When I was at the grocery store yesterday, I noticed they were selling individual wrapped rolls of TP and Paper towels from a local Restaurant supplier packaged in 2 Packs or 4 packs. I want to say it was marked Sysco. I have had issues finding hand sanitizer. I got something called Bahama Bo's Ocean Fresh 1.5 oz hand sanitizer at Farm and Fleet recently but it smells very strange, I would buy some Purel in a heart beat if I ran across it. Last week I found a spray bottle like a pump hairspray bottle of alcohol spray. I have it in my car, and have been spraying my hands to disinfect them when I leave a store or work. It does not seem to hurt my hands as much as hand sanitizer does, so I like it. DD and I ran some TP and Paper towels to Mom on Sunday, and told DD I should have gone through her stuff she moved out of her apartment a week ago, b/c she had bounty Paper Towels in her Kitchen Closet. She was like wait, I had Bounty Paper Towels, and I was running all over trying to find paper towels so I could clean my apartment?
