Started the morning with the news that the VP in my department was let go which I knew was going to be bad for me. Then I got the call that my last day will be tomorrow. I started an unemployment application, but couldn't move it forward because of my last day worked being tomorrow. I'll try again after midnight tonight. I have folks in my network trying to help me find work, but recruiters are saying what I already know - there isn't anyone hiring. I called my auto loan and they say I can get a 90 day deferral of payments, but interest will accrue. I didn't ask for that yet though. This month's payment and next won't be an issue. But not knowing when the economy will improve I am going to have to plan for bare bones spending so I'll have to think that over this weekend. I noticed a tiny hole in my night guard so I may call the dentist to see if I can get a new one before the end of the month when my dental insurance ends. Because I will surely continue grinding my teeth. I've never lost a job before so this is quite upsetting to me. I feel like I have to take Cobra in case I get sick and end up in the hospital, but it is going to be so expensive. And I got letter from the county today saying my property tax is going up 200 dollars. Bobo I am very sorry! You have 60 days to choose Cobra, and it is retroactive back to last day of employment. Check your state exchange for insurance. Last summer I was able to find a gap policy for $450/month to cover myself and my kids. I'm still using it now. Make sure your profile on LinkedIn is up to date. I have been approached by several companies based off linkedin. Go to Indeed and post your resume, as well as check their for positions frequently. Find out which recruiters in your area specialize in your line of work. Contact them all. Also tell them if you would consider contract/temp work. Companies are still interviewing by phone right now.

BTDT and the situation does suck. On the other hand sometimes these situations can be a gift for self reflection about where you want to go next in life. You are smart, flexible and strong. You will find another opportunity. We're rooting for you!

Bobosensi, I am sorry you are going through this. Hopefully you will find a new and better job soon. You can appeal your assessment, I have appealed mine several times over the years. My assessment went up, I am not sure what it will mean for my tax bill though. But, I was not sure I would appeal it, as my assessment is in the right ballpark if I put the house up for sale.
I would call a broker and look for an interim "Gap" type policy if you don't have a lot of health problems.

The Affordable Care Act has open enrollment periods, but it also allows enrollment when their is a change in employment such as a loss of a job (I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure I'm right on this). Explore the options available. Depending on where you live, you might find a better option on the exchanges compared to the cost and coverage from COBRA.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I don't think many jobs are safe right now. Best wishes to you.

When my husband lost his job in January, we ended up going with marketplace insurance over COBRA because it was crazy expensive. We had been paying $440/month for a family of 4, but COBRA was over $1800/month. Crazy! I've seen people complaining they filed for UC in mid-March and still haven't gotten a check. We have never had to file unemployment before and were dreading it since everyone said the state system was a wreck and they had a lot of problems signing up. When he signed up on April 20th, it took five minutes. A debit card showed up 7 days later (even though I signed up for direct deposit), and the PIN number showed up 2 days after that. It took the financial determination letter another 10 days to show up, but in the meantime I was able to file a first bi-weekly claim on 5/2. We will be able to file the second after 5/17. No checks have been deposited yet.

Now to the interesting stuff...how did the VP being let go lead to letting you go?

Times are getting tough for many. I’m still working, but my two brothers (both work for universities) with 25+ years have been laid off. My sister is in health care, laid off, so out of the four, I’m the only one still working. We can only hope that things start to turn around again.
I have a feeling we are nearing the end of this thing, but I really don’t know.

Will you be getting any severance? I know it's probably the LAST thing you feel like doing right now, but please try to negotiate for severance and healthcare. I'll get a month's pay plus my unused accrued vacation. I can sign up for cobra but have no idea what the cost will be. I do have 7-8k in an HSA and I think I can use that money towards premiums if I am out of work. But I'll check for other plans in the marketplace. I am in good health so if we weren't in the middle of a pandemic I would go without. But I'm concerned if I did get sick and end up in the hospital it would bankrupt me. I was able to file for unemployment. I thought the severance would prevent me from receiving money, but I read that severance money doesn't have to be reported in the weekly earnings so maybe I will start getting that right away. With the extra 600 a week unemployment is about half my salary, but will allow me to live without touching savings.

I'm sorry! Cobra really sucks but always sort of has us by the dangling bits. Lots of taxing jurisdictions are getting pushback on increased assessments and rates while everyone is getting gut-punched-maybe your area is fighting this too? Hugs and hopes for the best. All my neighbors were posting on next door about their increased assessments. Mine was a little lower than most, but I had an increase last year too. I need to look into how to fight it, I just haven't had the energy for that yet.

Now to the interesting stuff...how did the VP being let go lead to letting you go? Internal political stuff. A couple years back the company bought another one, and it had a real slime ball VP. But the executives just love the guy. For a while he was in charge, then he got moved to another department and was shuffled around but never let go. He got back in with someone new from the executive team after we bought another company last year. We've been losing people for months, but my department was safe. We knew as soon as we were told he was gone that the other VP was going to start getting rid of everyone as soon as he could. I just had no idea how soon it would be for me.

You can make that wàaaaay most interesting! What kind of sleaze ball? Exactly how did he schmooze his way back in? How are you going to get revenge?

Well that just sucks. No words of wisdom from me since most have already posted good suggestions and thoughts. Just hang in.
