In 19 counties across CA all non-essential indoor businesses have been ordered to close for 3 weeks. Between protests and enough people not wearing masks or social distancing we're going backwards. They've closed all state beaches and beach parking lots and I'll be curious whether or not my city closes the beach because if they don't it's going to be a zoo and backfire spectacularly. It's supposed to hit 90+ inland while LA beaches are closed and those people will just flock here or any other beach that's an option.

I was on a conference call today and 2 of the people were backing Dan Patrick's idiotic remarks. In some ways I really wish the virus would hit rural areas. I don't want people to die, but these 2 live in a rural area outside of Dallas. According to them this is one huge conspiracy to get the US to become a socialist nation, the numbers are all made up, only one person in their area has died and he was in a nursing home so that's "questionable." Sure guys, the entire world got together and decided to fake a pandemic...

Covid got in to a nursing home in a rural part of Iowa. It was brought in by a sick employee. She got a covid test because of how she was feeling. She worked while waiting for her test results. On the third day after she took the test, she was sick enough that the nursing home sent her home. 12 human beings who lived in the nursing home have died. The state of Iowa saw fit to fine the nursing home for something like $7850 and the nursing home is appealing.

Yesterday was really my low point when I had to share the service plans for a member of our community who is dead. Whose face I will never see again at our community meetings. Whose partner of many decades is quarantined, alone with her grief and fear.

"They've" walked back on opening bars and restaurants. Bars can't have indoor patrons, only out doors. Capacity for restaurants is reduced. Of course there's the stories up about bar owners now who may lose their business. I don't know how I feel about that anymore. I've come to the realization that I can lose my job, now because of the college age group, and the fact that when all is said and done, college probably won't be that safe when they open up.
And, my university system is one of the largest employers of the state and also generates billions in economic activity for the whole entire state. I don't know how our plight is any better. But, education is not valued, no one gives a crap.

Two nurses (man and woman couple) at one of our hospitals came down with Covid. The woman had very obvious symptoms was told to show up at work when she called up whomever nurses call to determine if they are sick enough to go to work. This nurse even asked for a covid test for a few weeks and they wouldn't give her one. She was on the job at least a week before she was told not to come in.
Then they told her partner not to come into work after she tested positive.

It got into nursing homes early on in maryland and something like 60% of our deaths are from nursing and LTC facilities. There are fines, but they seem awfully light for the sheer degree of negligence.
As for colleges...I tend to think that a number of aspects of the college experience were getting overinflated, not least the number of jobs that required a college degree just because they could (and the price! OMG.). It wouldn’t surprise me if there was something of a correction in higher ed. Both of DS’ babysitters should be entering their sophomore years this fall and neither one is sure it’s worth the tuition price.
This whole thing just sucks.

This situation won't be good for them and I can see a lot of changes in the future for that entire industry. The only caveat being they have been admitting more and more international students since they make a lot of money on them. Perhaps the current institutions will end up with largely international students and US kids will have some other options. I also hope we see more on-shore manufacturing, infrastructure projects, and small business creation. I have a feeling imported goods may not be as easy to get or as cheap in the years to come and more people may decide to support local/small businesses. It seems like the younger adults today have always leaned more that way than their parents.

The Patriot Act had a good article regarding colleges and Corona and the problems it's exacerbating recently. Free on YouTube if you don't have Netflix. ETA: It's a show not an article lol they're about 20 mins long.

I haven't seen the episode, but I will.
Have you seen Hasan Minhaj's stand up "Homecoming King"? It was (is?) on Netflix. It is my favorite kind of stand up - one big long story, with a bunch of little stories supporting it, and it all ties together at the end. I always think they are the smartest comics that can weave all of that together. Worth the watch, if you have nothing to do this weekend.

Higher education has benefited greatly at the expense of students. I think everyone needs to be responsible for their own decisions (your loan you pay it but I've got no issue with lowering interest rates) but some of the costs and fee increases have just been wrong. Like a lot of things in life there's plenty of people involved who are just doing their job while they aren't the ones driving up the cost and I've got nothing against them. That said sooner or later higher education will have it's day of reckoning and I think COVID has moved that day up big time.

Hmmm...I think I have cuz I do enjoy him, but since I can't say for sure guess I need to (re)watch it. I love the movie the spy who dumped me and crack up at his character. Possibly more because it's him versus the actual character.

How the number of administrators at colleges have gone up exponentially, how high salaries are getting for those administrators, how some colleges are foisting more teaching of to graduate teaching assistants but still charge you full price even though they're paying the TA $15/hour, problems with tenure and how adjunct professors are being run ragged trying to make a living and have less time, etc.

It has to do with NCAA athletes focusing on football players as the guy who put it together is a former player but there are other former athletes who took part. None of it is really surprising but it discusses how the NCAA exploits student athletes in various ways - making money off of them, players at times can't even afford food and being given grocery bags of food leads to suspension, if they get injured in the past they would lose scholarships, etc. According to the documentary in D1 schools they make an average of over 100K per football player once accounting for the value of the average scholarship. The top 50 football coaches all make more than 1M a year and in any given state the highest paid state worker's are usually college coaches or they're near the top. Some of these coaches have country club dues that are covered by the schools among other ridiculous costs.
Not trying to change the discussion to athletics but it just goes to the point that higher education is more about money and not actually education. Some of the student athletes enter college not even being able to read. A year in they still can't because they spend all their time practicing and are given paper classes which is an actual term for classes that don't exist that they get grades for which keep them eligible. The NCAA's original charter said verbatim how it's about education which they've backtracked on saying that's the responsibility of the school. Basically they admit to jumping the shark years ago and unless they're forced to change or care about athletes education many won't.

People in my small community of 2000 and the surrounding area that makes up the school district are testing positive for Covid. Imagine all the graduation parties didn't help.
The school district had to suspend baseball last night in the 3rd inning of a game because the administration was made aware that someone involved with the team tested positive. That means the team is on a 14 day quarantine.
Somehow, the school district managed to get a Test Iowa site set up this afternoon at the Fire Department.
I tested negative with my test that I had to have to have a colonoscopy.

This just in...Governor Abbott, Texas, has issued an executive order requiring mask in all public places EXCEPT you don't have to wear one when voting or when engaging in religious services. I am about to go through the roof! Seriously, WTF???
I can't decide if he is catering to his base or trying to kill them off

We have a record number in our state (Oregon) again today, by over 30% increase. While our numbers look good compared to other states, the curve is rising dramatically. And the percent that is community acquired continues to rise.
Our state is very private about data, so it is often hard to get data about specific sites of infection. And while the big metro area continues to rise, there are some major issues in some rural counties. The mask order went into place on June 24 in some counties and state wide on the July1. So it will be awhile to see if that has any effect. Probably negated by July 4th gatherings. And of course there is a report of State Police Troopers refusing to wear a mask in a coffee shop yesterday. All reopening is paused, but so far no talk of rolling back anything.
I was quite smug in April when our cases were among the lowest in the country. But while we shut down early and fast, and waited to reopen, we probably opened up too much too soon. The death rate is flat, hospitalizations are up, but so far no strain on our health care. This could change rapidly in the rural areas.
Personally, we have gradually been going out more, but will probably hunker down again.

Still waiting for info on schools in the fall. We are going to be waiting until the first day of school, it seems.
I get it, it's hard to decide what to do, when you have no idea what conditions will look like in 2 months. But it's really hard for schools, teachers, parents and students to plan with no framework.

I just spent an extra 30 minutes at my dentist after my cleaning, talking about all the ways our world will change in the months and years to come. It was really nice to talk to someone in person, even if she was wearing two masks, a face shield, booties, hair covering, and full PPE garment. She's seeing the profound impact it's having on her practice, her personal life, her children.

Our superintendent sent out an email saying we'll have in building school in the fall if our area remains at the current phase. If we backslide one phase, it will be remote. My states numbers were up today. Not the crazy numbers many other states are currently seeing, but 500+. I rarely see masks on people, and it seems like most people are trying to go back to their old habits as much as possible. Gyms and theaters are still closed, but that's pretty much it.

Marion County, IN is going to mandatory masks on the 9th. What is the point of waiting a week? No idea. I didn't read the article that stated it. I think they want to give folks a chance to get masks. I know only about half the people that shop at the mall where I work wear them. Almost all the mall employees wear them but not the shoppers.

Iowa's number of positives is on the rise again. Over 500 yesterday and 70 in my county. Of course people are saying it's because of more testing. So, Tuesday the local high school baseball had to go in to 14 day quarantine. Yesterday it was the softball team. Baseball and softball are not contact sports. I don't see how football and basketball are going to be able to play unless wishing it away actually works.

I am sorry. While too many states are in this position, your post really resonated with me. BTDT.
