Both sold their remaining inventory at big losses. You can usually get people's remaining inventory on ebay in bulk for very low costs. One of my friends sold her inventory pre-internet days. I don't know how my niece sold hers. I know they have used Craig's List to try to sell stuff.

I know a couple of people that got the pink cadillacs. One was a friend's mother and one is someone I grew up with. Never was recruited by either of them to attend a party, host a party, etc. Now that being said, Mary Kay's Ultimate Mascara is one of the best mascaras around. I buy mine from a friend that works at another law firm. She has her regulars, doesn't throw parties or try to recruit. I just email her when I am out of mascara or the lip gloss (sugar and cream) and I walk out to meet her at lunch and I get my product. She's sold a lot of mascara at one our happy hour haunts by just telling people to look at my eyelashes.

No, we don't walk away. But when we're holding on to something precious, we run.

I see a couple of pink cars around here with Mary Kay stickers on them so someone's getting pink cars somehow...
I've never done selling like this. What I've observed over the years: 1. You have to be outgoing. 2. Have a LARGE group of family/friends ok with spreading the word that you're selling it, even if they don't buy it. 3. Be willing and able to take the small orders. 4. Have a really good outlet - multiple break rooms/cafeteria/etc. to leave booklets at (and do so, even if you have to pay for them.) 5. Get your name out there. 6. Work with sellers of other stuff and do cross-marketing parties/open houses.
I know 3 sellers who were successful in selling Avon/Pampered Chef because they were able to do all or most of those things. Everyone else I know who's tried selling MK/PartyLite/jewelry/Taste of Home/Living Simple sucked at it and failed at at least 3-4 of them.
