Since all states are opening back up now, is that stimulus idea dead in the water?

A family of 3 could net $120,000 in income. That is NUTS! Cancelled rent and Mortgage Payments for a year I vote for no more stimulus. Or a stimulus that targets those in the greatest need. giving them more than 2-3 times their normal income is insane. Even if they pay out this stimulus, airlines will need help, Colleges will need to be bailed out, States and Municipalities will have less income. We can't act like money falls from the sky and just give everyone whatever they need. We will end up a failed Nation-State for sure.

That bill isn't going anywhere...at least not as written. I signed up for alerts on it way back when the bill was introduced and it's just been sitting ever since. It's really pretty insane honestly. It proposes that everyone in the family regardless of age receives that money too.
eta: And I love how they were going to pay for it. Just mint a couple Trillion dollar coins! If it's that easy, must mint a few more and get rid of our national debt.

I know, right? Hyperinflation is coming anyway. This would only make it 10x worse.

With 4 kids, one proposal would be 6K/month, and the other one 10K/month...for up to a year. Then potentially $1000/month/person for another year after that.

I just hope people are saving some of this money since the extra $600 a week ends after 4 months.

Technically she should be going back next week but got her boss to agree to let her work till the end of the 4 months (since she makes more on unemployment) and report back to work afterwords. He was ok with that because it is a small business and they are not 100% back yet production wise so save him having to pay her I guess and he does not report her to unemployment.

Didn't people make fun of Yang when he proposed 1000$ per person per month for everyone 18 years & older?

Think that would ruin the economy and not be good for young people, will discourage working and give the government too much control over our lives

UBI is never going to happen in this country. FFS we can't even agree that everyone deserves health insurance. We just had a multi-trillion dollar stimulus and the average person got....1200 bucks. Whoop.
This is just pointless grandstanding. It's a fantasy.

I decided to pick my second one still in July in hopes of getting the 600. Though I still don't know if I'm getting anything for this go round. Frankly the UE payment plus the 600 IF I get it for all weeks unemployed would only mean I don't have to take money out of savings. Though a week and a half into the first one I've already taken money out - hopefully I'll get paid and it just replaced what I took out. Not holding my breath.

They lived paycheck to paycheck before this. They are getting the state $150/week each, now the $600, and received the $1200 each. They are truly making much more now. I hope they are using it wisely to catch up on bills and save. The good thing is the casino is closed so that can't blow it.

Don’t you also have to pay taxes on your unemployment payments? If it’s not automatically withheld, some families are going to be shocked when they owe $$$ in taxes next year.

They should do it. Give some money to some actual people.
Versus the CARES Act (aka the Amazon and Walmart Shareholder Benefits Act).

The couple we are helping can't get a reason from the state why they aren't getting the $600 a week. They can't even get through, they also did not get the $1200, sent it to an old bank account and they get a message about can't be determined and it won't let them put in back information, she has tried and tried. I don't hear of people here getting the extra $600. I'm sure if they were folks would be hearing about it. Wonder if it varies state by state as I know our UE system is completely overwhelmed. Also the young man got a letter they are phasing people back in to work and he used to work a lot of overtime and doubts he does. I don't see them being able to survive on $175 a week UE forever. Her grandparents are also helping. And we won't help feed them forever, that will have to end some day. I don't think a lot of jobs will come back.
I don't agree with the $2000 deal we can't afford it. I would rather see people have universal health care coverage. Seems like that would bring more jobs back.

This bill is already essentially dead. The new push is the Heroes Act which was submitted yesterday which is another one time payment and extension of extra UI until January.

Oddly enough I think that might hurt business. Where I work about 90% of employees who have been furloughed are making more on unemployment.

I would much rather have health care coverage, and I think the US has to stop tying healthcare to employment. Obviously, currently it's likely making a bad situation far far worse, but even more than that, I think that it prevents people from taking risks and starting new businesses. The long-term consequences of all this spending are going to suck. Eventually we are going to have to raise taxes. And when the economy has improved, I'm okay with that. But, right now we can't afford not to spend all this money, or we will be stuck in this hole much much longer.

My wife is the floral manager at the local chain grocery store. Sales were incredible for Mother's Day. There is a lot of extra cash out there. But I can see where for those businesses banking on cheaper labor, it would be harmful.

At the dentists office we were talking about the UE extra, none of us knew if anyone is getting it. The receptionist said she knows a young women 22 or 23, laid off her work, has 2 little ones. She has not gotten anything either and asked her to help her. She said we called and called and everything we could do and nothing. The dental hygienist that does my teeth said her hubs is in law enforcement and on the swat team. She said the suicide calls are unreal and they had 3 serious incidents in one week. People barricaided in their homes threatening to kill themselves. This is getting bad, because the ones that need the help the most don't seem to be getting it.
We did get the stimulus money yesterday, I was going to donate some but with helping the renter, probably not. Then I have my next quarterly estimated tax payment so will likely make that.
I do feel sorry for people and something will eventually have to be done. But in my book, health care is the primary need first.

My government is giving $2,000 a month to people who have lost their jobs and are struggling due to Covid. Not everyone gets it. If you QUIT your job, you don't get it. If you're working from home, you don't get it. Giving money to everyone seems foolish. Trudeau announced yesterday that seniors will get an extra $300-$500 to cover incidentals...they already get pensions, but their expenses could rise, like ordering food and essentials online, because they're vulnerable and shouldn't leave their homes. Getting their meds delivered, things like that. Why give money to EVERYBODY? It makes no sense to me.

Although it sounds nice to get $2k a month until this ends, I am not a fan of more national debt. I certainly don't want to cut necessary programs and funding it through taxes is always a fight. I understand the need to get folks back to work so they can be self-sufficient. I think if social distancing and face masks are kept as mandatory, then most businesses should be able to be back up and running. sporting events, concerts, and dining in at restaurants might be a bit longer. I know compromise in never easy in washington and both sides always try to slip in non-related items to a bill. I guess I'm an optimist and hope they can come together for the sake of the country.

It obviously varied but for most were in the 40-50k a year range. Which is a fair bit more than even the $15 min wage so many want would be.

I'd be a little owly if they handed out another 2K on top of that to everyone and left me out.
