Interesting to note that we don’t even keep track of illnesses experienced after air travel. Is that because catching something while flying is so common that it is an expected part of air travel? They do when it's something serious- they did with passengers on planes carrying someone who later developed ebola (which had only a TINY chance of being transmitted on a plane unless they sneezed right into your face). My nephew was part of a group of athletes who got norovirus en route to an NCAA championship swim meet a few years ago and they traced it to a few planes- the affected athletes had started out in different areas of the country. They actually delayed the meet a couple of days. Nephew's team won. I had to laugh at the clueless public- within 24 hours I read an article chastising United for flying with a plane crammed full of passengers and also read that Frontier Airlines backed down after public outrage in response to their plan to let you book an empty middle seat- for $39 to $89. You can't have it both ways, peeps. It costs $X to get the plane from A to B and that amount changes very little if the plane is only 2/3 full. Empty middle seats will not come free. Measles and TB are also tracked - and if someone with one of those has been in an airport or on a plane they seem to contact people (on the plane) to the best of their ability. It's all after the fact... there's no "health check" before people get on a plane (or after they get off). FWIW: if you'd be concerned to be contacted that the plane you were on a day or two ago ALSO had someone with an active case of TB... then maybe you don't want to get on a plane currently - you have no idea who on the plane also has Covid19. (TB and covid19 both spread thru breathing and both can be kinda catchy... especially when you've been breathing the sick person's air for a few hours...)

You haven't kept up. 😉 Right after the supposed death knell announcement NCL got funding that will support them for around 18 months of not sailing. I sincerely hope that funding did not come from US taxpayers, since they register their ships in countries such as Panama and Liberia, which have more... shall we say... flexible regulation. No. Though carnival went through a backdoor in the US due to one of trump's buddies being on the board or something. A big reason why they don't have US corporation is because US workers wouldn't work a lot of the jobs on the ships. So they don't have to follow US laws for international crew. It's a lot more complicated than that but it plays a part.

It's a lot more complicated than that but it plays a part. I'm well aware of the difference. So far I've taken cruises only on US-flagged vessels (5 so far). Crew positions are widely sought after by wonderful, enthusiastic people with advanced degrees in areas such as Marine Biology because they pay according to US standards and they get treated decently.

You're also only going on very small ships and pay a pretty penny for it. It's way easier to find 50 Americans to go on a ship than 1500. It's also not like the ships are operating lawlessly shopping whatever they want. Each country the major cruise ships flag their vessels under is a signatory country of a world wide law that covers people working on ships including minimum wage and working conditions among others.

When I was 16 my parents took us on a cruise. I'll spare you the sordid details but I went down to the crew deck with our waiter one evening...
It was a Royal Caribbean ship and the staff lived 4 people in bunk beds in very small cabins. He said they made like $3 an hour because they were only paid for the hours they actually served and were largely restricted from leaving the ship.
He said the Norwegian officers treated them all like crap, but that otherwise it was a decent job.
Interestingly, we used to watch them pitch the trash bags into the ocean late at night off the back deck. They used to shoot them out of a cannon deal. I think they were fined for the process and denied doing it.

In that second sentence I read "on" instead of "to" and came up with a totally different story than watching trash get hurled into the ocean.
Although, with the term "sordid details" I may not be that far off.

You aren't that far off. I guess the job of a crew member isn't so bad after all!

There popped up his picture. I discovered he's a marathon runner in his country. I sent him a photo of the two of us. He sent me back a message that he had thought of me from time to time and had good memories of the time we spent together on Saint Thomas.

Not when you look like that and have hormonal, half-dressed teenage girls around whose parents let them drink and do whatever they want on a cruise ship. He could have been fired for having me below deck and for meeting up with me on the island, but I'm glad he risked it.

Definitely couldn't get away with that now. The security on the ship definitely keep and eye out when crew interact with employees and employees have to wear their name badge even if they're allowed to be up out on guest decks when they're not working. Definitely an immediate dismissal for fraternizing with guests. They swipe your card for the night clubs to check age too.

He could have been fired back then if we got caught sneaking me below deck or meeting up on the island.

Oh I was making out with a contract employee (he was on board to check the elevators) at the club on board and he was wearing his badge (on that line he shouldn't have been since he was given passenger quarters) and I was straight up surrounded by security personnel as they separated me from him and was then thoroughly questioned by a female security officer when my drunk ass had no idea what was going on because I didn't see the badge. 🤣🤣🤣 He didn't get fired because he was on boarded as a passenger. His on ship "boss" basically told him to take his badge off once he's done for the day because he didn't want security on his ass again. Wouldn't want to see what would happen if it was someone who actually couldn't fraternize 😳
